Just seeing the Chychrun trade now

Has anyone watched these two closely to compare? I watch alot of buffalo games when I can and other teams but these are two players I cant form an opinion on. Chycrun was the bigger name in the media thats for sure.

This is one of those trades where; best case scenario, maybe the guy DET takes with the pick busts out, and we start talking like "oh it was great, we got our top RHD for a bust!" and the counterargument goes "it was still a bad trade at the time it was made." seen it once, seen it a hundred times

the hronek trade looks terrible when you compare it to the marino trade, the romanov trade or the chychryn trade. it looks about the same (maybe better) than the lundqvist trade

I liked romanov but the isles board gave the impression at least he has been a struggle.

Better contract value? Chychrun is a #1 defenceman getting paid 4.6 million this year and next while Hronek, a middle pairing defenceman is getting paid 4.4 million for the same term. I know we got some pretty good stuff around here, but this is one hell of a take.

Even with Chychrun becoming a UFA at the end of his contract, you have no issues paying players like him. They're game changers.

sure. he's bigger, a better skater, a better passer, much stronger in his own end and less prone to mistakes with the puck. hronek probably has a better shot

I do think Hronek has potential to be better than Chychrun, but I dont know if I would bet on it. Depends on if this is an outlier year, or if this season is real development and he's actually becoming a better player. Big pro scouting bet, the biggest theyve made by far.

He's 26th in the NHL in ESP for defenders and is on pace for 30 ESP this year.

It's all about the ES points.

Hughes can succeed with a guy like Schenn, he doesn't need much help. If anything Hronek with Hughes might actually mean less possession time for Hughes and not provide an net scoring boost to the team. That's why I think he's not Hughes long term partner. They will try to get two pairings rolling offensively at ES, one around Hughes and one around Hronek. Hronek on the PP is irrelevant as Hughes will dominate time.

Chychrun has one extra season. Hronek can be qualified at the end of next season so in terms of control it is the same.

Just absolutely blows my mind that they had a player like John Marino available last offseason, who’s a better fit for what they need and signed for 5 years @ $4.4M, and couldn’t make it work but completely overpay for Hronek who’s going to be looking for a hefty raise after next season. Complete mismanagement.
