You make a decent point overall but Winnipeg coming back in the 2011 as the Jets is certainly not part of that thread when they had been disenfranchised for something like 15 years while the NY Jets maintained continuity throughout.
The Winnipeg Jets were able to come back as such because Arizona had retained the Jets IP/ branding, and simply transferred it to the former Atlanta Thrashers franchise when they moved to Winnipeg.

Yea I definitely get why grammatically but I don't understand this trend towards this style of name. They feel like design firms trying too hard to justify the massive paycheck they're getting to come up with this stuff. The recent PWHL brands all did it too.

When's the last time a new or rebranded team in any sport just gave us a straight up animal?
Well, in North America outside the NHL I don't know if any of the other leagues other than the NFL have even done relocations let alone expansions within the last 10-15 years so the sample size is really small.

I think as well, it's important to remember many team names are products of their time; I really think names like the Canadiens, Canucks, Flames, Maple Leafs, Blackhawks, Red Wings, Oilers Wild, Kings, Islanders, etc. would not be the top choices for various reasons even if those cities were awarded franchises today or even in the early 2000s. Personally, when I write some of those names out now and think about it, they seem ridiculous. Like, ISLANDERS? Admittedly I've spent almost no time in New York to know whether there's any real sentiment to that name outside of hockey associations, but it'd be like adding the Florida Peninsulars now.

In other words, you're not wrong about why/why not, but sillier things like advertisment metrics/marketing appeal and other things drive branding decisions more than simple, local sentiment.

I live 15 miles from the stadium and never liked Yeti. It's just a weird comic book name. I'd prefer something straightforward - my favorites of the lousy final 20 were Mountaineers and Outlaws. Pioneers is also good although Denver U college team has that one. I'd be fine with Raptors also I don't care if a basketball team already has the name. I just don't like the WNBA style singular names - "Fever" "Sky" "Mercury" "Lynx" or whatever.

Edit - I'd love to go with Utah Coyotes if we could just keep the name from Arizona.

I'm not even sold on the name Yeti, but I think this is so stupid

Who's going to "confuse" a professional sports team with a cooler?

Nobody goes to a Denver Nuggets game and gets confused that it's not a McDonald's convention.
No one is struggling to differentiate the LA Galaxy from a Samsung Galaxy.

Hell, we have Jets-Jets, Rangers-Rangers, Kings-Kings, Panthers-Panthers, Giants-Giants, and Cardinals-Cardinals and we seem to get by fine

They cover completely different markets.

Post 50 isnt a mod warning so I guess im allowed to suggest the following team names....

Just kidding.

I think the potential for confusing them with the Yeti brand is absurd. Who confuses a hockey team with a cooler brand... Seems crazy to me, also a bit weird for a Tibetan word to be owned by a cooler company such that another brand cant use it.

That said, Yeti never made sense to me. Its the Himalayan abominable snowman, that has nothing to do with Utah. Better than "Hockey Club" but surely they can do better than Yetis.

What it should be I dont know. Perhaps an actual Mormon reference would be appropriate (though not the inappropriate ones people keep bringing up). Settlers or Pioneers or something? Or maybe a reference to one of their state animals like the Elk or something.

Why couldn't they just keep Coyotes and make them more snow/mountain themed?

And I'm glad Yeti was shot down. That and Kraken are extremely 2010s.
Same way that big cartoony logos on basketball jerseys were extremely 90s, and logos with thick, sharp lines were extremely 2000s.

Just FYI -

NBA: New Jersey Nets moved to Brooklyn in 2012 and kept the name Nets
MLB: Oakland Athletics moved to Sacramento in 2025 and changed their name to just "Athletics" (then planning to relocate again to Las Vegas in 2028)

How about Utah Bow Wows? Utah Crazy 8s? Utah Charmers?
