Utah Hockey Club down to final 3 names: Hockey Club, Mammoth, and Outlaws (upd: Wasatch already nixed)

What is a Wasatch?

Wasatch is too regional. It's an obscure mountain range most people cannot pronounce correctly and won't care to when told otherwise.

What the mother f- is a Knickerbocker, why is the team in Toronto named after a foliage (obviously that’s not why but if we are just going to pretend to be ignorant then…) and why are famous teams in baseball called “Sox” and have actual socks for logos?

We can play this game all day. It’s weird because you aren’t used to it. Your ignorance doesn’t mean it can’t eventually work. Do you think the majority of folks actually know why most teams are named they were or what the true origin stories are? You don’t think regionally important names have been used throughout professional sports history?

I hate non-plural names for teams in pro-sports. IMO “Kraken” is the only good one. These are all awful.

Speaking of non-plural names, the Wild franchise should be called the North Stars. Why not? It’s not like there’s no precedent for it, Major League Baseball has two teams with the Sox name.

I’m guessing they’ve already negotiated a deal with them in principle if they’re announcing it as a possibility. It does seem strange though considering there is some territorial overlap there

...so Yeti can't be used cuz of the cups & coolers, but another sport's franchise name can be used despite the fact that they play in the same geographic area of the US...makes sense...

They should be called the Best Around (Utah Best Around, nobody's gonna keep you down => shout out to Karate Kid).

For real though, as a Canucks fan I think unique names like Wasatch would be cool to showcase something local. Mammoth would be a close 2nd for me but I could see that being the most marketable of the 3.

Why don't they just recycle old team names Utah Scouts rolls right off the tongue.

Can’t tell me there wouldn’t be some sales of a jersey incorporating “US” as a logo.

There were certainly some scouts involved. There are still scouts involved.

Goly that is so much better than anything else I’ve heard.

im gonna go out on a limb and say that Yeti is an exponentially more valuable brand than an indoor lacrosse franchise. The cost to negotiate an agreement with Yeti would likely be prohibitively expensive and may even be a nonstarter from the cooler brand’s perspective.

Meanwhile they can probably license the Mammoth name for much cheaper, and it would probably be a smart business move on the part of the lacrosse franchise. That fee could easily equal 5-10+ years worth of their net revenue.

Not sure about the CO Mammoth’s specific financials but indoor and outdoor lacrosse franchises move or fold all the time (although I know the outdoor lacrosse team in Denver was one of the few profitable franchises in the MLL).

take the Prince route, just call the team Utah initially and then after a long legal battle go for The Team Formerly Known as Utah, and then just invent an unpronounceable new letter to represent the team.
