Confirmed Trade: [UTA/BUF] JJ Peterka (signs 5 years, $7.7M AAV) for Michael Kesselring and Josh Doan

It's already game over. They take a step back with this. I really feel for Sabres fans at this point. They need some big chunk of good luck thrown their way somehow.

I don't think they take a step back from this - the team is loaded with smallish young scorers who will pop with top six ice time. They have needed an RD like Kesselring for like ten years - he's going to help Power or Byram/Dahlin if those two aren't together. The other thing Buffalo needed - big two way forwards with leadership, they got that with Doan, though he isn't quite there yet.

I like it for both teams. I'm sure if there was like a 3rd included for Buffalo people wouldn't be so critical.

Obviously, Peterka wanted out. Buffalo's main issue is retaining talent, so whatever the return was going to be was going to:

1. Be immediate NHL help
2. Team controlled long term

Even if it wasn't the best package offered in terms of value. I think people are underrating both Doan and Kesselring here a bit. Doan was probably the main target as a character kid who could serve as their next captain and won't jump ship as soon as possible. Obviously big RHDs are a commodity in the NHL and Kesselring is emerging as a solid top-4 option to fill a hole.

Utah gets the best player and should improve most in the short term with Lamoureux ready to step in, but long-term I'm not sure how much Peterka is an upgrade over Doan. They are already rich in wingers and I guess wanted to optimize points. I feel like Doan is going to be the better playoff performer.. we shall see. Having both Iginla and Doan (and Crouse and McBain.. for how long we'll see) is a bit redundant so I see adding some more dynamism with Peterka. Him and Keller should be a nice combo

Kesselring is a nice piece for Buffalo. Definitely a late-bloomer but is legitimately a top-4 caliber RHD now. Utah definitely sold high on him, though, to somehow land Peterka for him considering that he was once a throw-in for Nick Bjugstad, of all guys.
There was a time Ethan Bear and Troy Stecher were considered top four guys after one decent year.
Hope I'm wrong but I just don't see the it factor with this guy.
