Confirmed Trade: [UTA/BUF] JJ Peterka (signs 5 years, $7.7M AAV) for Michael Kesselring and Josh Doan

I don’t mind this for Buffalo. Utah I’m not sure about. They had a hard time defending last year but managed to score plenty. Trading one of the few guys who could defend seems like it could hurt them while placing too much pressure on Simashev and Lamoureux.
That's literally the opposite of what happened last season. Utah had great offensive and defensive metrics, but struggled to produce on their quality chances. Peterka is a great finisher.

Kesselring + Doan is a better return for Buffalo than 90% of what has been posted in this thread.

It seems like people just don't know who Kesselring is yet?
I mean he's a decent young player but he's getting completely overrated. I'd much rather have JJ.
Kess has had one decent year with pretty ok to average point totals but my worry is he's another Ethan Bear or insert any Dman that got overvalued because of the position he plays.

Value in a vacuum the sabres lose this for sure....but...Kesselring is EXACTLY what the Sabres need in their top 4. If the Sabres can replace Peterka's production through the likes of Kulich/Benson/Ostlund etc... and Doan can amount to a quality top 9 player, I can actually see this working out as a win-win for both organizations. That being said...... not a sexy deal by the sabres by any means, but long term, they're trading from a position of strength for a position of massive weakness, filling their biggest need, complimentary shutdown top 4 RHD.

A for Utah, i'll say B- for Buffalo with potential for an A as well regarding the team composition aspect of this trade.

I also don't think any decent RHD wanted to sign in buffalo, trading/draft is kind of the only way they're going to bring any real talent in.

Forget fire Adams, but Ken Holland needs to be re-hired by the Oilers and then fired. How do you throw Kesselring in for Bjugstad? Imagine the Oilers getting Peterka if they truly didn't want to keep Kesselring.
Kesselring at 1.4m would be a godsend for the Oilers right about now

Seravalli reported earlier that Buffalo didn't want the #3 OA from Chicago for Peterka. You can bet they told Armstrong that Kesselring was what they wanted, not the #4 pick. And that is exactly the right play - the Sabres need win now players, they can't trade off for picks again or it's game over for the whole organization.
If you don't want futures then you need to make trades that make the team better, which this didn't.

IMO Sabres lost on “value”, whatever that means to you, but I think they’re a better team now than they were with Peterka. Buffalo has forwards who can score, they literally don’t have a single right handed defenseman who doesn’t suck, though. And if Doan can be a 15 goal third liner who adds grit and all that intangible shit, this could be a good move at the end of the day.

Frankly, this trade makes a lot more sense to me than any of their previous bad moves. Seems they actually have a direction with this move.

Kevyn Adams losing another trade

one #9 pick too much IMO.

JJP should return Kesselring + #4 on his own
That is a massive payment for Peterka. I will be pretty ticked off if that was the deal.

Phew...#4 still with Utah.

Kesselring is a good get. Solid 2nd pair RHD with a howitzer. Doan is a good, young 3rd line crash and bang guy.

While not a great deal for Buffalo…this is a win for Adams… finally figuring our the trading thing..he didn’t completely crap the bed on this one

They really don’t though, 2022-23 did crazy things for their offense reputation.

Okay return but Buffalo gave up the best player by far.

because we’ve learned Adams has this job because he’s a Pegula dickrider, this reeks of Pegula just being like “get this ungrateful ahole out of here, whatever.”
