The Russian squad may have some serious omissions or misplaced players...

There is always that "X" factor for Richter of course, but he's playing against Vasi, who is pretty unflappable and wouldn't give him an inch. Plus there is some serious top end talent on those 4 lines for Russia. That's just insane. I am trying to think who the Russian squad is missing and my best guess is perhaps Kamensky if you had to pick someone.

I think even factoring in that the Americans have some guys missing it is still an edge to Russia. For example I think you have to put Amonte on there somewhere and take Broten out. Tkachuk - as in Keith Tkachuk? - should be on there, but he wouldn't fit at centre. I actually think Matthews shifts better on the wing, or even Roenick, and if you are going to have Weight there he needs to be a centre. Maybe move Kane from LW to his natural RW and get rid of Mullen and then put Leclair - a notable omission - on LW. Anyway, the forwards still favour Russia. And the American defense probably should have Derian Hatcher on there somewhere. But their defense isn't much if at all better than the Russians.

Also, goaltending is an edge to Russia. Vasi is there, but you could still add Tretiak, or Bobrovsky or Khabibulin as back ups. Richter, Barrasso and Beezer perhaps make the American trio. Thomas comes to mind as well maybe, but either way there isn't the American edge there.

Russia in 6 games. Too much firepower.

This is how I view them, closer than at first glance. (Only using “>”, “~” and “<“ to only give a rough not detailed comparison of the players.)

Kane ~ Ovechkin
Modano < Malkin
Hull ~ Bure

LaFontaine > Kocalchuk
Matthews ~ Fedorov
Mullen < Makarov

Weight < Panarin
Roenick < Datsyuk
Leclair < Mogilny

Goudreau ~ Krutov
Tkachuck < Larionov
Parise < Kucherov

Leetch ~ Fetisov
Chelios > Kasatonov

Housley > Gonchar
Suter > Zubov

Schneider > Orlov
Hughes > Zhitnik

Richter ~ Vasilevski

Russia has better players, to some degree I think that USA might fit together better as a team but Russia also has the instant chemistry of the green unit. I'd have picked different rosters but either way I'd go with Russia here.

Last 40 years, since 1982? Would this include the few 1970s greats who were still on the national team by '82?
If so, I'd roll 4 lines:

Krutov - Larionov - Makarov
Bure - Fedorov - Mogilny
Ovechkin - Datsyuk - Maltsev
Kovalchuk - Malkin - Kucherov

Fetisov - Kasatonov
Vasilyev - Zubov
Gonchar - Bilyaletdinov

Tretiak
Vasilevsky
