The International Ice Hockey Federation approved rule changes on Friday for its overtime and shootout format in the upcoming season.

In the preliminary round of international tournaments, overtime will be played up to five minutes with three-on-three skaters. If the game is still tied, a shootout with three rounds (and if necessary, tie-break shots) will take place.
For playoff games (except for the gold medal game) the overtime period will be played four-on-four for 10 minutes. If still tied, both teams will go to a five-round shootout and potential tie-break shots.
In the gold medal game, overtime will be played up to 20 minutes with five-on-five skaters. If overtime settles nothing, a shootout with five rounds and potential tie-break shots will take place.
The new format will be apllied at the IIHF men’s, women’s and junior categories for World Championships at all levels.

The TSN guys have been explaining the OT/SO procedures every overtime during the round robin all tournament and specifically said round robin it's 3, knockout it's 5 guys. Said the same thing today too.

Maybe the tournament website guys just copy pasted the format from the past years without realizing. I doubt the media would make a point everytime that the format had changed if in didn't change at all.

Okay, conversation over.

Repost since a lot of people miss or choose to ignore..

Yeah, but apparently the info given to media (and the teams?) say best of 3 for PO round too, but it certainly seems like it has been changed but someone missed to update the info to media.

I also thought it is three shots in the shootout. But doesn't this really matter? OK so Russia would win after three shots. But outcome would be same, game decided in SO lottery. After all this is U20 tournament where kids show how they play. I hope the main wins for these kids in their future. At least they played with heart.

Each team both sent out 5 different shooters to start so I am not sure where the confusion was.

Thanks for that, such a silly rule change though. 5 shooters is hard to Watch, there was a reason they changed away from it in the first place. Oh well

Usa was the better team all things considered, russia took too many reaally stupid penalties and usa took advantage.

Really hope Canada wins and we get a Canada-US final. We need revenge for 2010.

Wow what a great game this was, both team deserve to win this game, Samsonov tried the pokechek too many times in the shootout. But the shootout its such crapshoot. As a hockey fan i really enjoyed watching this game.

Who do you trust more.....the on-site officials, coaches, media, players, administrators, and fans or some guy who copy-pasta'd the rules to the website?

I hate the shoot out.

Tough loss for Russia. Congrats to the USA.

The only way I'd be okay with it is if every player on the team takes a turn to shoot on the goalie.

All 23 players. Then whichever team has the most goals wins.

Now that I'd be in for.:yo:
