Muzzin hasn't been Muzzin this year. I don't know if it's the injuries, or age, or both. If he's going to be out for an extended period, or even the rest of the season, I don't think we have a choice BUT to find someone else for that spot. Chiarot would surprise me, given he doesn't like the Leafs at all, has said he won't come here, and has a NTC to prevent him from coming here... so....
I think his first concussion was tye marner collision

You go past the trade deadline counting on Muzzin to return to form? Feels like a long shot to me. Holl’s a bottom pairing guy without him. We lose our middle pairing right there and Sandin-Lilijegren not ready to fill that spot.
I didn’t say don’t add a defenceman. Just that we don’t need to sit Muzzin out to create the cap space.
Holl’s 2m cap hit allows you to bring in a 8m cap hit if you use double retention.

If it looks like he's going to be out long term (as in at least a couple months) then yes, they should aggressively seek out a top four replacement.

If it looks like he's going to return sooner than later than no (no team is going to ltir a guy whose able to play), at least not as aggressively. In that situation like always it depends on the price on the tdl market

This is stupid. We can bring in an 8m Dman with Holl’ cap space if we do double retention.
But no let’s sit one of our best defencemen instead.

Sit Muzzin until he is healthy but once he is bring him back there are better ways to get cap space.
Double retention? It takes 3 to tango in that situation and you have to find 2 teams willing to play along

I just wonder if we get to a point or have gotten to a point where shutting down Muzzin for the rest of the season (I’ll leave it up to others to decide if he makes a heroic return in the playoffs is part of the scenario or not) makes the most sense for the player and the team.

Do we want him rushing back and playing hesitant and sort of confused hockey short and medium term? No. Does he want to risk his long term health for regular season games (or the playoffs) maybe not. Is there medical rationale for letting him rest for a long time? Probably.

Im not sure where you are getting your information from, but I heard he wants to be a leaf, and his 10 team no trade doesn't include any Canadian teams.

Yes but his dad could be BSing I guess .. although I never seen Matty as a BSer except at bar at Hot Stove lol .. and Ben respects his dad .. anything is possible but there will be a bidding war for Ben and not sure Dubie going to give up anything good to Habs .. I know I wouldn't .. very unlikely trade partners

Wish we would have gone for Chara, instead of Lyubushkin for our third pairing dman. As far as Muzzin, they should shut him down until the start of the playoffs and do whatever it takes to get Chychrun. Worrying about picks and prospects right now, isn’t going to get us a Cup. Gotta go all in, and loading up our D is the way to go.

Really? So you don’t think Chara would be excellent as a third pairing Dman and help our PP with that rocket from the point? Interesting.

The last time Chara scored a point on the PP was 2018/19. He no longer plays on the PP, and his lack of mobility would be a major concern for giving up short-handed opportunities. NYI are one of the poorer teams on the PP, and even they don't want him on the PP. This isn't 2010 anymore.

I think the Leafs seriously need to ask themselves -- "do we see paying Jake Muzzin $5.65m next year to be the best use of our limited cap space?". I suspect, with the way Sandin has played and how Muzzin has played this year, the answer to that is no, event despite Muzzin's toughness and playoff experience.

Yes, the Leafs could go out and acquire an $8m defenceman with Justin Holl going the other way if they had double-retention...but that would almost certainly limit themselves to guys on a 1-year deal, as teams are generally adverse to retaining over multiple years.

What I think this injury has done, is possibly push Muzzin's "medium term" future -- not with the Leafs. If you view Muzzin as an "own rental" that you'll have to move in the offseason, then his LTIR space allows the Leafs to go out and get somebody like a Jacob Chychrun, Connor Murphy, Damon Severson or Adam Larsson...a guy with term at a reasonable cap hit, that likely fits into next year's vision of the top 4 with Rielly, Brodie, and Sandin. Heck, maybe even Dermott finds a way to stick around as the Leafs don't really have anyone else coming through the pipeline on the left side.

Thing is need to get the player to sign off on something like that. And guys, generally speaking, want to play.

Imo teams SHOULD utilize player-gane management more often when it comes to icetime, unfortunately the cap system remains a constraint on that.
