To be honest, this trade was genius in 2 ways.

1.) If Murray is always on LTIR, the Leafs got 2 picks to take LTIR space that doesn't affect them.
2.) If Murray finds his game, the Leafs got a decent goaltender for cheaper.

The only negative is if Murray is horrible AND healthy, but that's not his track record so far. Also, with his injury history, won't be hard to Mike Smith the guy.
Now this is optimism!

It's true, the only way he can hurt us is if he's awful and healthy.

As long as he's one or the other, we have nothing to fear.

Potentially, I think regardless whether it was a minor injury or big injury for Matt Murray he was going on LTIR. It helps the leafs to give him as much time to deal with any injury and also helps them with their cap situation.

Expect the worst, hope for the best. Problem is that he groin could explode his first game back similar to Mrazek's. Better hope Sammy does not go down.

Yeah hopefully Murray is ok with going on Robidas Island full time next year

He could be unhealthy for exactly 9 games, play 1, and be unhealthy for another 9 games repeatedly. Extreme example obviously but if he's constantly out with minor problems that aren't serious enough for LTIR, and then on top of that he needs a runway of 2-3 games to shake the rust off every time that's the actual worst case scenario.

Not exactly

If he's injured our plans go from running a 45-35 game split with Murray - Samsonov to 60-20 with who?

Samsonov has a fair share of his own questions. He's been very subpar for most of his career. Hasn't shown himself a capable 60 game starter and has no playoff success

Which was the main x-factor with Murray. We wanted him for the playoffs where he's won and been big. Him being unavailable returns us to having a glaring hole in the playoffs at goaltending unless Samsonov breaks out huge.

We need Murray to be healthy and give us solid play so he has confidence and can be the Guy in round 1

The Leafs would just LTIR him.

Why would they wait 9 games to get him back a game early?

With his history, the Leafs can LTIR at any time without any questions. How many people are questioning how Mike Smith went from starting every playoff game to not healthy enough to play again?

Kallgren. He played 14 games last year with the Leafs and 26 with the Marlies. That's 40 games.

Weren't his prior injuries mostly concussions though?

Why is it that every goalie that comes here suddenly has a glass groin? It is definitely suspicious when it only becomes a problem here, and I thought they fixed this problem with their medical staff in the offseason... Clearly not.

The 50 contract limit is an easily solvable problem. It’s not hard to trade out a prospect that the team has lost faith in for next to no return.
Someone like Joey Anderson. If the team doesn’t see a future in him another team will take a flyer on him for future considerations

I’m not reading anything into the LTIR. This is the perfect situation for the leafs. It could still be a minor groin pull but they want him to take his time with it. This also buys the leafs time by putting him on LTIR. They can keep a strong roster before making a move. To me this is let’s take the extra precautions and also solve our cap situation. Compared to this is a huge injury.

You should be reading into the LTIR - you think they'd voluntarily shutdown their big money goaltender until late November at the earliest, just for some cap wiggle room? He's hurt.

They could easily have run the university ATO tonight & used an emergency recall on Kallgren for Monday if it wasn't a major injury. Fact that they didn't, suggests it's not a minor one.

Exactly, he must be on injury reserve for at least 1 year, preferably 2... can't be stop and start. Need permanent cap space so they can acquire a permanent solution in net (when the opportunity comes up)

Can people here fathom a thought here that the GM is incompetent?

- Matthews/Nylander UFAs in 2 years
- Not a lot of cap space
- Leafs have had nothing but 1st round exits to show
- There has been no progress since the rebuild, massive overpayments for no term, stupid cap allocation, team composition etc...

Even if you disregard the above how in the blue hell is this anything genius? you need good goaltending not only in playoffs but also regular season to even make playoffs.

Seriously wtf. It is amazing the lengths some will go to defend dubas

He's had at least 3 "lower body" injuries in the past. Not sure how many were specifically groin area, but if I recall 1 or 2 of them were.

Murray only played in 20 games last year and missed 38 games due to injury and illness with multiple ailments.. Health was and will always be his #1 concern.

The best ability is availability and 1 game in and now 10 games out not a good start, but not really shocking either when you look at his history recently.

"Murray played a total of just 47 games the past two seasons in Ottawa because of a number of injuries". "Matt unfortunately here, was just injured all the time. Take nothing away from him, he just was hurt all the time, he had a lot of bad luck,” Sens coach D.J. Smith told reporters Friday of Murray's time in Ottawa.

If Mike Smith was 28 and playing for a contract in two years, he'd be within his rights to make a stink about it and get the team investigated + fined if they were sandbagging him for LTIR benefits. Andersen and Campbell both had long streaks where something was clearly wrong but they could still play a couple games in between being "day-to-day" with some undisclosed injury or discomfort.

Who could have predicted this in the off-season? Literally anyone with half a brain cell. It’s not like he can stop a puck anyway, he sucks. Waste of a roster space.

Murray does it, so people would stop talking bout his glove. Has a career ending injury there.

It's incredible our incompetent GM could only get 25 % off the Murray contract with the insane risk he was taking. Like seriously and utterly unbelievable.

Alright guys, we'll give you Jake Allen, Gally, and Anderson for Mathews and a 1st.
