I've seen a few threads for favorites...how about the ugly ones?

Stumbled across this photo of Tim Thomlinson of the Billings Bighorns circa 1978 and had to share...supposed to be the face and horns of a bighorn sheep (apologies for the photo quality)

I always thought Felix Potvin had an ugly mask. It was never clear how that design was supposed to illustrate a "cat" to me at all. Just looked like a mess.

Unfortunately this is just gonna turn into a DaveArt bashing thread.

I agree. Although it was kinda neat how in later stops little team flourishes showed up in the art, like when with the Kings.

Price’s outdoor mask was particularly horrific one year.

This is pretty much a gimmee.

Gerry Cheevers drew stitch marks where he thought he would have had stitches if not for the mask.

For me, the ugliest masks don't have as much to do with the art on it, as it does with the shape and style of them.

Hasek's birdcage was fugly as hell. I also didn't like the dan Cloutier or Glen Healy style of masks.

I liked Hasek's birdcage with the Sabres. The white/black or white/blue contrast looked good. With Detroit and Ottawa it looked much worse, because you had the very pale combined with a middle color instead, which was specially bad with the chin part of the mask.

Yeah, grew up in Buffalo rooting for Hasek but his mask was an embarassment, especially when so many other goalies at the time had innovative designs. I guess him being a 2x MVP and all made up for it but still, ugly cage.

None of those are masks.

Those are all helmets with cages attached.

It's also a "Cobra" mask which is clearly a rattlesnake.

Gary's a really cool dude even today, though. Although no one was as cool as he was in the 1970s.

He blames the mask painter for having the wrong snake :
"My first Cobra mask was painted in Toronto by a guy named Greg Harrison who really got into painting masks. I told him I wanted a Cobra on the mask I sent him. He, being an easterner painted me a cobra with rattles. While I may not be in the HHOF, my 2 masks are."
