Injury Report: Tyler Bertuzzi has back surgery

For what it's worth, it's the same doctor - Dr Frank Camissa - who operated on Mike Green in 2018 and on Zetterberg in 2014. He's at the top of his field, Bertuzzi is in good hands.

So we have like what... two years - four years left of Bertuzzi then? Or is he expected to make a virtually flawless recovery (this is a question for anyone, not directed at you)?

Why didn't he do this months ago? And his contract negotiations are going to get trickier now. Maybe another trade with the caps for Kuznetsov?

Back surgery at age 26... don't love that long term.

We'd need more information than "back surgery." There's a lot of different procedures they could be doing. But as a general rule, backs only tend to get worse with time. Surgery can fix immediate discomfort or injury, but rarely will someone feel better than before the ailment.

Considering the severity of Z's injury I don't think it's an indictment on the surgeon.

I don't think he/she was saying it was. Perhaps this is who the Wings use for any back procedure. What we know is that the two most severe we have had went to him. The caliber of surgeon doesn't point to a minor clean up I guess would be the concern for some.

There's always the rehab option first.

If that doesn't work, then surgery.

Zetterberg missed 0 games after his surgery for back problems. Played almost all games since that to his retirement, and missed 5 games because of a knee problem.

Hope he makes a full recovery first and foremost to avoid any severe back issues in his personal life.

Won't make any guesses as to how it could impact his on-ice performance, just fingers crossed he can still have a long career.

Not the best of news as back surgery always has some pretty big downsides. Hopefully Bert avoids those and makes as close to a 100% recovery as he can. I have been told by those that have had it 100% isn't a realistic goal...

I believe it, my back is also wrecked and everyone in the know (doctors and patients both) have urged me to avoid surgery if I possibly can.

What I have always understood and certainly when Zetterberg talked about it, is with the back they can really only do a few things. Also once you do it, that is it for procedures in that area in a lot of cases. At least in the more heavy duty ones. I work for a Window and Door company in construction, my boss and one of the sales guys are retired from field work and in the office due to back issues. I have learned a lot more about it since changing to that place as well 18 months ago.

There is simply not a lot of good. My Boss is going to get some fusion work done in 10 years, they have the goal of him making it to 60 because once they do it, they told him there isn't a lot more to be done when the pain returns, which they make pretty certain for him it will. Surgery is really always the last option on the back from what I have heard over the years.

Now this doesn't mean Bert cannot return and be an effective player, I am really pulling for him. But the back or sports hernia was my big concern. I know we pretty much assumed at this point it was a somewhat significant core injury, but yeah that was a kick in the teeth when I read it for sure. Best of luck with yours, it is a really difficult thing to go through life with from everyone I have come across that has back issues. The longer you can put it off the better you are. I have heard the same thing about hips to some extent.
