Ty Smith had really promising season last year, but this season has been hard for him. The Devils have Luke Hughes, Nikita Okhotiuk, Kevin Bahl and other LHD's coming from the system, who probably can take his place in the lineup. They also have Siegenthaler, who has been really good, and Graves, who has been mostly good.

Are there any teams that could use Smith? The Devils needs are a youngish goaltender, scorers and wingers who have size and grit.

I think the Devils would trade Smith only for youngish players, not draft picks or older players.

Smith, a completely unprotected 2022 1st, and a cap dump of your choice to Arizona for Jakob Chychrun. The Devils have already picked two centers 1st overall in the last five years, anyway. Are they really going to be that crushed if they happen to win Wright or Cooley by some miracle with the 6% chance (or whatever it is) that they’ll end up having?

Can add a conditional pick from AZ, I guess. If the NJD pick is top 2, AZ adds whichever of the Avalanche or Hurricanes pick is earlier. If the pick is top 5, AZ adds their own 2nd. If the pick is 6th or later, AZ adds no picks.

NJ doesn't have any cap dumps but beyond that, something like Smith and the NJ first for Chychrun and a lower first make sense. The issue to me is that NJ might not want to move on from Smith until Luke Hughes arrives in NJ. Smith is apparently living with and big buddies with Jack. I can't see NJ pulling the rug out from under Jack by trading his best friend on the team. Once Jack's brother arrives maybe it's different.

Devils should be patient with Smith.

If the devils did make Smith available, we really need 3 things in return:

1. Top pair shut down defenseman
2. Middle pair shut down defenseman
3. Bottom pair shut down defenseman

Chychrun is a great player, but I'm not sure if another LHD is what they should looking for.

I agree but if you could get him for Smith and a pick swap you'd have to at least look at it. Chychrun fits the profile of defenders NJ is looking for much more than Smith. He's still young enough to play with Hischier and Hughes. You'd have to figure out how to turn Graves and Severson into a right handed defender with some term and youth but presumably that's doable.

I wouldn’t be open to a pick “swap” outside of the terms in my proposal. If you want a guaranteed pick in the deal, I need more assets.

Why would the Devils sell on Smith when he's at an all time low?
Makes no sense at all unless they can package him to get a scoring winger or shutdown RHD, I can't see them even entertaining the idea right now

Smith for Labanc+Chrona (good G prospect)+23 3rd? If a shutdown Dman is needed maybe switch Knyzhov in there?

Lol you can have your choice of Hamonic or Poolman (would offer Schenn but he's got another year and is playing top-4 next to Hughes and dished 12 hits by himself last night, so the physicality is definitely there, and we could use him ourselves).

Jack can bunk with Luke soon enough
No free rides, I like Smitty but it's not a great season for him.

I'm good with everything but the unprotected part. How bout going the other way. If top 5 Devs retain and give AZ a pick, sweeten with a prospect. Give them Bahl back.
IDK gotta shake this team up some how

Edit: keep Bahl send Zacha

Look at New Jerseys record. That pick youre asking for (+Smith) looks like a very good bet to be a top 5 pick.

Got to see Smith a few times live last season. Not sure how much I’d be willing to give up for him. I think he’ll play in this league for a long time but I wouldn’t move a ton to pick him up.

Smith's play this season scares off a lot of interest and really diminishes his value. Not sure which GM would give up something good for him.

Yep. Look at AZ’s record. That 2nd I’m giving up I’d the Devils pick is Top5 is a very good bet to be 33rd overall. 28 slot move-up isn’t the most outlandish price to pay to upgrade from Smith to
Chychrun.
Looking at it as a 28 slot move up is disingenuous. Thats the same gap as a 4th to 5th round pick but they're not equidistant in value.

When was the last time a top 5 pick was moved? I just don't see it happening from a precedent standpoint or from a value perspective, Smith + a top 5 pick is too much for Chychrun considering the way he has been playing

Garland got Guenther. Chychrun is worth two Garlands. :dunno:
