Kings Article: Transition From College Hockey Hasn’t Been Easy For LA Kings D Prospect Derek Forbort

Oh, do you know the muffin Gann,
The muffin Gann, the muffin Gann,
Oh, do you know the muffin Gann,
That lives on Drury Lane?

Oh, yes, I know the muffin Gann,
The muffin Gann, the muffin Gann,
Oh, yes, I know the muffin Gann,
That lives on Drury Lane.

He's never in a hurry
Never has a worry
Bringin' joy to everyone
Then he knows his work is done

Oh, you should know the Muffin Gann
The Muffin Gann, the Muffin Gann
You should know the Muffin Gann
Who lives on Drury Lane

I wasn't a huge fan of the taking Forbort in the 1st round, but I like the fact we're bringing him along slowly. I see him as a bottom pairing defesenman in the NHL.

I liked the pick because at the time he was a bigger defenseman who it was thought had some offensive potential. The big red flag was when Forbort failed to ever take the next step in three years at NoDak. Generally if you are a first round pick with NHL aspirations you should atleast show flashes as a freshman, be really good as a sophomore and then really dominate as a junior, that just simply never happened with Derek Forbort.

I think the biggest reason the McNabb trade was made was because f the stalled development of Forbort, pretty sure it was his name in the box to take Mitchell's spot and he is still a ways away.

His tepidness towards physical play and initiating contact concerns me a bit, not that I'm expecting him to be the next Scott Stevens, but I also don't want him to be the next timid Aki Berg, Denis Tsygurov, Denis Grebeshkov, type who had quite a bit of hype in their draft years but just never put it together because they were so easily taken advantage of by the competition.

If they can groom him to play like a Willie Mitchell or Rob Scuderi, I'd be perfectly fine with that. Hopefully another year of him playing top 4 minutes in Manchester works wonders for his development.

Remember...

1) Not all big guys are players who run people over, and;

2) Last season was his first FULL season in professional hockey.

He still has a long way to go, but that should be expected, under the circumstances.

Didn't think he played at all bad last season. In fact, IMO he had a pretty successful first season as a pro. Unlikely that he will ever be offensive dynamo but as long as he is defensively sound and we can pair him with a PMD then its good enough
