Very excited about the season after these first couple days of camp. It seems like they are more of a team this year compared to the last 2, when they were really just a bunch of guys skating around trying to make plays without any clearly defined roles. They also seem like they grew up a bit after last year, which makes sense considering the adversity they had to go through.

I think theres a chance they get off to a slow start, which happens when new coaches take over (2013-2014 is a prime example), but around the new year i expect them to really take off. If we get significant improvement from Laf/Kakko/Chytil, we can make some serious noise.

Absolutely LOVING that Gallant and Drury are addressing the face offs.

Even if it’s bringing in a retired linesman to give them some hints… anything.

This team has been abysmal in that area for over a decade

This is nothing new, they do it every camp, problem is we haven't had a camp in 2 years. I believe Brad Richards was the last guy brought in to help. The linesman thing might be new but they work on faceoffs every year.

I'm a little disappointed that this organization still view Kreider as an option on the top line, or atleast one of the top lines. Kravtsov should be the one moving up and Kreider moving down, the whole "put players in their roles" mantra that was preached by Drury isn't unfolding that way. Like i do like Kreider but i look at him as a perfect fit with Chytil and Goodrow. Like how does Kreider continue to get those minutes? If we traded Buch so Kreider could get top 6 mins thats nuts.
I agree. Not that I mind him in the top six. I just wish it weren’t considered fait accompli.

Next March: "Makar is awesome but he doesn't even pk. That should give Fox the edge in the Norris vote, imo".
That’s because PK minutes, if they could be avoided on smaller guys like fox/makar really benefit them in the long run. They are kept fresher overall because of less minutes, but their bodies don’t take the added beating of blocking shots or being smacked into the boards on a dump in. If it can be avoided, I’d keep fox off the Pk too.
Staal was a great pker for years because he was smart, had an active stick he always kept in the passing lanes, big/rangey, and good on D.
It would be a real benefit if Fox didn’t have to PK at all, and he can play more 5v5. No way anyone else is running the point on the PP either

Lindgren-Trouba being PK1 and Nemeth-Fox being PK2 is fine. It would let them roll out Miller-Lundkvist after the PK with their offensive players. I'm sure Nils will get some PK time too, just wouldn't rush him into it.
Miller should be killing penalties. He takes up a lot of real estate. Fox doesn’t need bother, if you ask me.

If Lundkvist and/or Jones eventually reach their potential, we might not "need" Fox on the PP either. All though, I would be fine with Fox spending more of his minutes on 5x5/even strength with just PP2 time. Dependent on IF the former regarding Lundkvist/Jones comes to fruition. It might be Lundkvists best shot at adequate playing time for the foreseeable future, unless he can and does successfully switch to LD. But even then, he has some at least near equivalent talent to contend with.

I get it, Fox was great on the PP second half of last season. First half of last season though, many were questioning whether he should be on the PP1 at all. But I think IF we had other suitable PP Dmen, we don't necessarily NEED Fox to spend all those minutes on the PP. And he's so good in all situations, I think more minutes at 5x5/even strength would just benefit the team as a whole. And I do think Lundkvist's game, at least for now, looks well suited to play alongside guys like Fox or Jones on the PP as more of a sniper to their puck moving through the neutral zone.

Miller, at least based on last season's play, I don't think is a threat to usurp anyone on the PP. I don't think Jones makes the team out of preseason, but there's a chance he could outplay Miller in preseason and sometime during the season, replace or at least be rotated in to the LD mix. At the expense of either Miller or Nemeth. But it's very unlikely that would happen at the beginning of the season for more than a few games before Jones would head back down to the AHL for a bit.
Agree wholeheartedly with pretty much all of your thoughts. The X-factor that Lundkvist possesses is potentially having one of the best shots in the entire league. He is also no slouch in all other areas. If Nils is able to get shots off consistently with velocity and accuracy I think it would be ludicrous not to at least try him on the top pp. Fox is very good but his shot is average at best. Probably below average.

Concerning journalism, information has been reduced to a transactional relationship. You like Carp, you are going to pay. Same for Vince, Larry, Colin and the rest of them. Having spent time in the business I can tell you financial pressure has ramped up and it’s there on everyone involved. Vince talks about subscribing all the time and when I told him I subscribed, I got a nice personal note from him. If there are no subscribers, there will be no coverage. I’m old enough to remember when there were 10 newspapers in The City and two more on Long Island. See where they’ve gone? Most of the reporting from broadcast outlets and NHL.com is pretty vanilla. The only podcast that’s a must listen is 32 Thoughts.

I don’t mind paying for The Athletic because the coverage is so broad and deep but I’m not going to learn much about the Rangers unless it’s from an out of town reporter.

I love knowing what’s going on. It’s tough to be that way and be a Ranger fan right now.

I've seen plenty of comments and video of laffy in camp but haven't seen much footage of kappo or comments on his play. Can people share?

My dad & his dad were both union truck drivers, delivering most of those papers from the late 40's til 2011. Up until the late 80s, they despised Newsday for being a non union paper. How quickly they world has evolved in front of us....pretty soon the ones remaining will be digital only.

The inside scoop from Brooksie, Carp & Ed Jovanovski says that Kaapo weighed in at 245 & has assumed the Tim Kerr role on the power play. Nothing else to report.

No, this is legitimately something new. You are right, they have brought in past players, and guess what it didn’t help. Bringing in a Linesman is certainly a different approach and one Drury is familiar with from when he played in Buffalo.

Has a training schedule been posted? Just wondering if we'll see another prac game today since one group didnt play yesterday

Sounds like a job for KA Miller to me... maybe he'll be ready for it this season.

Edit: @egelband beat me to it :thumbu:

Kakko & Laf:
Gallant's laid back attitude is exactly what they need now. They can play on instinct without hesitation and worry. These guys are self-motivators, and DQ has probably set them up with good habits.

Reaves:
I can't remember liking any player this much after 3 minutes of a presser. This is a guy you want on your team. Now I hope he can still play.

The attitude Gallant presents at a media event does not match how he addresses the team behind closed doors.

I am also with you.

This team could have made the playoffs last year with better coaching and experienced veteran depth. They had the talent up front. They almost made the playoffs with Mika having an awful start for a variety of reasons and Panarin having to leave the team for a few weeks. Even if they had a favorable schedule for a stretch in the last 4 weeks or so, they took care of business like other competing teams were doing in the division.

I think you are going to see a team that looks way more prepared to play from puck drop than we have in the last few years under David Quinn. Way more consistency. A better compete level. Smarter personnel decisions by the coaching staff both leading up to game night and during the game.

I also think Igor is going to be a lot better this year. Its not to say he was bad last year, but he just wasn’t up to par.

I also think this team is built well for an 82 game season. They have good depth all around. I mean Hunt-Barron-Gauthier could be a 4th line on a lot of the teams around the NHL. The group is young still, they have the energy and the talent. They have players that will understand their roles and succeed in them.

Yeah I think there is a feeling amongst NHL fans/analysts that this team could* make the playoffs as a wild card team, but I see this team as a the 3rd team in the Metro behind the Islanders and Carolina. There is a chance for that. Pittsburgh is older and Malkin is possibly missing the first 2 months. Washington same thing with Backstrom likely missing a good amount of time. Philly had a huge roster shake up.

Gona be a fun year

The team should be much better this season because of enhancement of roster and maturation of youth. Coaching won't be a big factor, in my opinion. Gallant has already said that the system will be about the same as last season and that every coach plays very similar systems.

They haven’t the past couple of years. I don’t get it. The coverage has literally gotten progressively worse since the Torts era. Everywhere.

In a world where the bottom line is directly tied to flowing content. It’s there on Twitter, in pieces. I guess they just don’t believe TV is worth the extra production costs?

It is a business and if they believe this is their best use of money and it probably is.
