ZAR and NAK have played nothing but 4th line minutes so far. The hints have been that ZAR is getting a contract. If those guys are on the roster I don't see how Simmonds or Clifford make this team.

That said, if Tavares is hitting LTIR we might see a bunch of different looks in the first month because we'll have the cap space for extras.

Edit: Apparently Tavares hasn't even been ruled out for the season opener so no way he's going on LTIR... no idea what the game plan is for cap space.

CJ says its hard to imagine there's room for both Robertson and Malgin, adding that the team would be reluctant to send Simmonds down.

I can already see Malgin being claimed and finding success elsewhere lol

If we could just please ice the best players for once instead of gifting spots to washed veterans that would be great.

Robertson will almost certainly begin in the AHL because he’s the only one that’s waivers exempt.
There is a very slim chance Robertson begins in the AHL. He's earned a spot and by all appearances, Keefe knows this. It's up to our cap specialists to make this work. But let's ice the best players to begin the season and don't play games with our youngster who has played his way on the team.

Keefe has been very cautious about what he says. He's saying positive things in a "he's getting better" kind of way, not 'he's made the team".

That tells me he may not share your sentiment.

In a market that puts everything under a microscope, it's probably for the best that he frames it that way and tempers expectations. I believe Robertson is tops in pre-season scoring (or at least top 5) so it would be a pretty bad look IMO to send him back down without even giving him a few games.

Maybe JT or Engvall sit 1-2 games and then see how guys like Robertson look? If they impress, Engvall departing makes the most sense.

Sending Robertson down is a mistake, ride the momentum. His confidence is sky high, put him in the top six and don’t look back.

I don’t even believe a Malgin is a lock to get picked up, there are going to be a ton of NHL talent on waivers in the coming days. I think we’ve exaggerated a couple early preseason games against nothing competition, playing pond hockey, with him getting prime minutes. I’m not sold at all and Robertson has done everything asked of him and frankly outplayed Malgin straight up anyways.

Agreed on the framing - gotta manage expectations to keep the pressure off the kid.

However, in saying all that, Malgin is only one point behind Robertson, and had to play on the 3rd/4th line for 2 of his games..

We could use that same type of argument for Malgin. What does that say to Free Agents who might be considering signing here if you perform like that and still get put on waivers? It's telling other free agents that it's not worth it to sign here because even if you perform well in various roles, you may not be given a shot.

That's arguably a worse look.

And I'm no Malgin fan, but objectively his play has been solid at both ends of the ice while playing up and down the lineup. Robertson at this point is essentially top-6 or AHL.

Theres a way to get them both on the team. They aren't fighting for the same spot

Exactly. I think Malgin is an option for the bottom 6 as well, whereas IMO Robertson is top-6 or AHL.

People want to waive Malgin even though he has shown he can drive play on any line. It's not necessarily an either or situation.

Robertson has earned a spot no doubt, unfortunately for him though Engvall and Kerfoot are 2 guys I just don't see being sat and it doesn't sound like any trade discussions have been going on.

It's understandable Keefe takes that approach. He hasn't said any of the new players have made the team, including ZAR, NAK, Malgin or Robertson.

One of the reasons he hasn't come out and said he's made the team is because he doesn't have to at this time. However, based on what we've seen, and what Keefe has said, we can infer that he is going to start the season with the big club.

It's the right thing to do, unless he has a miserable couple of games against Detroit. He'll probably be playing both games.

21 man with 12 forwards? If a forward gets banged up wouldnt they have to go with 11 for a game?

We only had 1 spare roster player the last 1-2 years anyway, an injury happens in game you deal with it.

Recall if you need to.

I don't think they should operate like that. It's been pretty hard to get Robertson tuned to the right NHL frequency so the moment he shows some NHL level comfort, they shouldn't scrap the project and worry about waiver eligibility. A Robertson who finds his footing in the NHL is more important than a Adam Gaudette or whomever.
