Where I go my own path on Malgin is I don't like the team build with dressing both.

Based on last season I prefer only one, since we know this team can score in bunches already. Then a very hard to play against 3rd line. But I mean if Malgin ends up bringing shut down play out of no where obviously yeah then both.
Yeah, I can see him holding his own on a third line.

He’s not shy of traffic, shows puck battle skills, good hands, draws penalties.

It’s no disrespect to NickRob to be next man up. He’s had a good camp.

These are the good problems good, deep teams have.

Obviously they were our weakest line by a good margin, but that's true for basically all 4th lines. Simmonds was -7 over 72 games, so a net -1 every 10 games. For that you get someone who fights and keeps the opposition a bit more honest. Obviously it's not guaranteed that Simmonds would have a similar +/- this year, or that his replacement would be even, but I think you'd be looking very roughly in that range - we're probably about 1 goal worse every 10-15 games with Simmonds instead of ZAR or Aube-Kubel.

FWIW, I have Simmer as the 13th forward. I wouldn't play him every game, but on games we think are likely to get chippy, he'd be in. On games we think will be less chippy, he'd be out (replaced by one of ZAR or Aube-Kubel). Basically an opponent-by-opponent decision (quite a common way to go with fighters). I'd probably play him in ~1/3 of the games.

We won't have the cap space to carry 13 forward

IMO if Malgin is somebody you want to keep and do not want to expose him through the waiver wire, give him a shot since IIRC Robertson does not need to go through waivers. If he succeeds, great. If he fails, Robertson is just down the road.

As far as Engvall goes, you can't replace him with another small, skilled forward. We got too many of those already.
The problem is, what kind of message does it send if Roberston can't make the team despite being a standout in training camp?

I would personally be willing to risk losing Malgin on waivers in order to have Robertson in the lineup on opening night. The truth of the matter is that once we have a healthy lineup, there won't be a spot for Malgin anyway.

What message does it send that they brought Malgin over from Europe, he's also been a standout, and they're still cutting him?

I don't see how one is any worse than the other tbh.

Nick Robertson future with the team is a lot more important that Geno Malgin. If I was Nick and didn’t make the team due to cap issues I’d straight up demand a trade.

I'd hate to lose Malgin on waivers and see him flourish somewhere else. With JT out to start the season, the door is open to see if 62/89 are NHL worthy when the games count for something. If 62 can't I got no problem putting him on waivers.

Malgin is not going to flourish elsewhere. He’s a smaller forward who is a dime a dozen player. Every team has a Malgin type player in their system.

Are they shifting Lily or JT on LTIR?????????????? Those are da 2 big questions here. If they do then no issues for all of them to start season with 23 guys. Gaudette Anderson and Cliffy go down. Sign Reese to Cliffy deal. Robertson stays up as 13th forward or Wayner in that role. Then make a decision once JT gets back. JT out for 10 games will mean almost nothing to team.

JT is not going to miss enough time to be put on LTIR, unless he has a setback.

Well i get that point but remember Kuch?????? .. he sat out for 2 months at end of a season because team could not bring him back to playoffs due to CAP .. i think this LTIR thing gets misused .. high paid players create abnormalities

No surprises there really, though it does signal that Anderson will be put on waivers... we shall see if he gets claimed. I wouldn't be surprised if he makes it through to be honest.

That Joey Anderson hype just ain't ever gonna pick up any traction. I truly have no clue how this guy has had the reputation he's had around here for so long. He's also had his sample size in the NHL and he looked completely clueless.

I’m still really confused with the Aston-Reese camp situation. Keefe talks like he’s already on the team and Zach himself doesn’t seem all that worried about still being on a PTO. Surely other teams would want him and could offer him more money than we’ll be able to. Gotta think they’ve told him he’s got a contract coming, so does that mean a trade is being worked on?

yeah ZAR is an automatic tbh.

but regardless of whether they sign him or not the Leafs still need to make a trade to get under the cap at some point.

Why would they be reluctant to send Wayne down?

The others have smaller contracts and he's past his best

yeah based on the lines at camp so far Simmonds hasn't been anywhere near a regular-looking line, and the Leafs don't have room to carry a 13th F.

maybe "Don't go to europe at age 23 if you want to be an NHLer" ?

yeah he's been so invisible that I think he makes it through....though tbh he's been such a nonentity that I'm not sure i really care anymore either way.

I don't care too much about him, outside of being a good Marlies player, who will help that team. From a Leafs perspective, if he gets claimed, who cares... but I doubt he does, and I hope he contributes to a good Marlies season. The better the Marlies are, the more it helps our legitimate prospects.
