Still over a week away from the start of the season so maybe one or both will be back ahead of schedule?

I wouldn't count on them coming back early but this is a good sign they're on schedule at least.

Very likely not. It'll be hard enough to get Malgin and Robertson on the team
There is no room left for any of them .. one may make it if they decide to cut Simmonds .. otherwise Anderson, Gaudette and Clifford go down to farm and Lily on LTIR and they sign Reese to replace Clifford money .. team just sweaks in under CAP .. unless of course there is a trade but unlikely

We don’t even have LTIR relief for 10 games which makes it even more challenging. We are going to lose guys to waivers or have to make a trade to clear cap. I can see Simmonds traded to a location of his choice for a 7th or future considerations to help us get under.

You get LTIR right away, they just can't come back for 10 games afterwards.

Is Steeves making the team?
I doubt it. Assuming Tavares and Engvall are both out to start the season, but everyone else is healthy, I think we'll see something like:

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Robertson - Kerfoot - Nylander
Jarnkrok - Kampf - Malgin
ZAR - Gaudette - Aube-Kubel
Simmonds

If Engvall is back by the start of the season, I'd play him at 3C and bump Gaudette (who has been pretty unimpressive):

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Robertson - Kerfoot - Nylander
Jarnkrok - Engvall - Malgin
ZAR - Kampf - Aube-Kubel
Simmonds

And then when 100% healthy, I'd edge towards bumping Malgin:

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Robertson - JT - Nylander
Jarnkrok - Engvall - Kerfoot
ZAR - Kampf - Aube-Kubel
Simmonds

Malgin vs. Robertson is highly arguable, but it's close enough that I'd lean towards giving Robertson the nod. I think Malgin is a bit better right now, but only a touch, and Robertson is at an age where his rate of improvement is much faster. I think given a full regular season development at the NHL level, Robertson is fairly likely to be ahead of Malgin by the playoffs.

No way Simmonds stays on this team with a 1.5m hit.

Douglas isn't ready, and many who have watched him, knew in advance that would be the case.

I too didn't expect him to be ready, but I was hoping he would be closer than he is. I'd heard that his skating had indeed improved, but I didn't think he was nearly fast enough to keep up with the play. I think he has a lot of work to do this year to become a strong prospect - although I admit this opinion is based on my observations on one single game...

His cap hit is $900K, not $1.5 mil (his $1.5 mil salary was a 1 year deal from a couple seasons ago, 2020/21). He's very close to the league min - I think it's $750K this year, so I believe $150K over. If we're tight enough against the cap that $150K matters, then he'll be waived for a true league min player, but yet to be seen if that's the case.

@Advanced stats

His contract can be fully buried.

2021-22: $750,000 + $375,000 = $1,125,000

So it's $1,125,000 that can be buried at the most currently.

Yeah, my point is that having Simmonds on the roster, vs. waiving him and replacing him with a true league min player, is $150K in cap hit.

Fair enough... but he isn't going to be on the roster anyway... just not good enough anymore.

Who in your humble opinion has not impressed during this training camp?

I think Holl is looking off, and Gaudette. I thought Gaudette would have had a legitimate shot, but he's been tripping over his own stick most nights. Holl is looking 2 or 3 steps behind.

Gaudette and Anderson haven't really shown enough. Both will end up on waivers.

Holl certainly has had some poor moments as well, but he's not in a position to be judged on a couple of pre-season games by management. He has enough of a resume, that they already know what they have... (good or bad, agree/disagree).

Edit - Simmonds and Clifford will get waived too, but I think we knew that before training camp... so I didn't mention them previously.

Waivers question:

For the guys that have to pass through waivers to play with the Marlies, do they need to go through waivers again to be called up to the big club if/when needed?

Thanks!

No, re-entry waivers were eliminated in the 2012 CBA.

I don't recall being into the transaction side of the game back then but man re-entry waivers were so dumb. IIRC the claiming team got the player at half the cap hit while the initial team has to keep half. This was back when you could bury the entire cap hit of anyone. It basically meant that anyone who got waived would literally never be recalled because you're risking having half their cap hit as a dead cap hit on your books when currently it's entirely off your books.

Imagine the Leafs trying to recall Jeff Finger via re-entry waivers back in the day. His 3.5 million cap hit isn't on their cap, suddenly someone claims him and the Leafs carry 1.75 dead cap hit now. Literally a risk nobody would every take, locking him into the minors. Even guys like Gaudette, Mete, Benn. Leafs waive them all and try to bring them backup at someone point, they all get claimed because the claiming team gets a player at a 375k cap hit. The Leafs now carry a 375k cap hit for each player for no reason. Basically means the only guys you're recalling are waiver exempt guys. How is this a thing the players ever agreed to?
