Trading our surplus defense. Go short term or long?

If the Pens are known for anything, it's for being in feast or famine mode. We are either tanking (intentionally or not) or are SC favorites. We're at the top right now and I can totally see some big moves for good players. Not sure if it's what I'd prefer or not, but I would much rather have the team win a cup or two within the next few years than be sorta kinda contenders for the next 10.

These D prospect conversations are as nebulous as it gets because everyone has their favorite guys.

"I wouldn't move Despres, but anyone else is fair game"

"Despres is a stud, Morrow shows great promise, and Harrington will be a god. I'm not moving any of those guys."

"Demoulin will be ready next year. Don't want to move him."

On and on. Everyone has their list of keepers. It's why Maata is always the one ppl are willing to get rid of. He gets the least ink and worst case we still have Pouliot from that draft (or so it goes at least).

To me it's just like when you buy a new toy. You gotta make it sting a little so you know ur getting something good. Otherwise you end up with a Dynex TV that needs repaired in 3 months and you're no better than before you bought it. If you want significant improvement you have to pay for it.

who the hell gets their TV repaired anymore? Its 2013

We have the assets and cap flexibility which we aren't going to have again for a long time. I hope Shero uses this opportunity and isn't afraid to go after the right pieces for a cup run, despite the costs.

Whatever we do, Despres should be off limits.
In fact, we should not be dealing from the main roster if we aren't talking about Kennedy... or Glass.

Despres is going to be a top pairing horse for the next 10 years, and has looked more than proficient for us already. Dealing him would be senseless in almost any scenario.

I just want to quote this again -

There is not a single player (realistic) out there that I would trade Despres for. Not a single one. Plus not knowing if Letang is going to sign back with us or not.

Couldn't agree more.

Go for the NOW.

Agreed. Shero cleared all of the cap space to sign Parise. We still have said cap space, use it Ray.

We don't need 7 dmen prospects. We can give up one or two to be a legitimate contender.

There isn't a right answer here, just a philosophy, really (go for it or don't sell the farm). This is my philosophy...

We saw in the 90s how difficult it is to win a cup, despite a sick roster of talent. I still can't fathom how the Isles beat the Pens in '93, but it happened. The next season Mario barely played and Stevens broke his face and was never the same again (then got dealt to Boston shortly after). Tocchet was also traded shortly after that.

It happened that quickly and before you knew it, the Pens mini dynasty was over. They never played in another SC ever again, despite still having players like Jagr, Francis, etc.

We saw how quickly Crosby can be taken away with his concussion issues. A career ending injury could take him or Malkin away from this team before their time. Letang may get traded, etc. These guys may stay healthy for another ten years, but never sniff another cup.

I learned that harsh lesson over a decade ago.

Nothing is guaranteed. That's why when you have your team healthy and playing well, with a weaker than usual East, you HAVE to go for it.

Shero doesn't have to sell the farm, but he needs to fortify this roster and give them help. If he sits on his hands this deadline, I won't defend him when others blast him, that's one thing I feel quite sure about.

He has to seize this opportunity. It's what top notch GMs do.

can someone insert that gif of the rock clapping?

this post is beautiful.

Something else worth considering regarding Iginla is that we would not be getting full value for him on our team. That is to say, our PP unit #1 is stacked for this year and (at least) next year. Iginla in his best seasons since the lockout was getting 30-36% of his points on the PP. We'd be getting a boost at even-strength, but not much else since our PP unit #2 doesn't see very much ice time. Other teams who would be putting him on their top line and top PP unit would be getting a much bigger return on their trade. Those other teams will also be putting in bids and driving the price for his limited services (potential of only 6 weeks worth of contract) through the roof.

Iginla would replace Kunitz. DB wouldn't be that much of an idiot.
