Trading Nick Robertson making 875k would be a mistake.

This kid could score 25-30 this year if we give him solid icetime, a consistent role in the top 9 and some powerplay opportunity. We need bargain contracts like that quite badly.

He’s a bit small but he’s fast, he plays with some tenacity and he has one of the best shots on the team.

And not only all of this, he’s still an RFA after this season.
I think Brad is hoping at some point this season he can turn Lily, Kampf and futures into a solid middle 6 C. That would be about a 5 million dollar player even with Lorentz and Hakanpaa stepping into the holes left by those 2.

I guess you don't buy into Nylander at C, because if that works out we have our two middle six C. If we make the type of move you suggest (perhaps include Jarnkrok too) then I would like to see the money spent on a top four D and let Benoit and Hakanpaa be six and seven.

Could also be a D.
I am not sold on Willie at C. I think we would be better off with him at wing. But I think that’s also part of the plan. If he does show well at C then as you suggest Brad takes the same stuff and goes after a D to slide OEL down to third pair.
There is time to sort this out during season.
But one small move maybe needed now to fit everyone in or when Dewar is back from injury.

CBJ needs bodies and to get to the cap floor.

I think they would love David Kampf at 2.4 million. Holmberg has proved he can handle the job for a lot less.

I would rather trade Kampf than Jarnkrok, and he also makes more money. Lorenz and Dewar can also play Center.

Not sure what we do with LW. Robertson is absolutely on this team, but what about Patches? If it’s one of the other, a no brainer to go with the 23 year old.

I honestly don't know what we're going to do about our 4th line

Are we going with a physical tone setting line or a defensively responsible bury them in the defensive zone line

Kampf isn't physical, but he is a good defensive forward, as is Jarnkrok and Holmberg
Reeves and Lorenz want to hit everything but I wouldn't trust either of them defensively and Dewar can do a bit of both

Those players don't mix well and when you do mix them you lose any identity you may of had and they struggle to be physical or good defensively

They need to sort it out then we know who should be on the chopping block

I think you put Robertson in a position to succeed and put up good numbers and then use him as part of a package at the deadline to get a C or D.

Next year you have guys like Cowan, Minten and Greba to try and fold in, something has to give on the wing, this year and long term.

Jamkrok does nothing for me especially nothing in the playoffs.

Trade for Dickinson or Laughton

All I know is that Holmberg is the 4C. Move Kampf
This was literally the move a year ago, there was no need to re-sign Kampf at 2.4m. I like the player, just not at that price point. We’ve had internal options for a while now.

Anyway, Kampf won’t be a difficult player to move if we do so, we’re not going to have to add sweeteners like some think we are.

Or better yet, put him in a position to succeed and keep him at a steal of a contract.

Only for a season, then he'll ask for the moon.

And with Knies possibly playing with Matthews, they could also be setting him up for a contract they can't afford.

Can't do both, IMO. Also, in terms of movable pieces to bring in more help for the defence, Robertson should be used for that because there aren't any picks other teams would find appealing.

If that transpires, which may or may not be the case, then you trade him at his peak value next offseason. He’s still going to be an RFA

This.

We would get much more for Robertson as an RFA coming off a 25 goal season. I believe we have to think about all of our players as assets to a sustained run of contending over the next four years.

When making the final selections for our roster over the next week or so, we will consider:

PLAYERS WE DON'T WANT TO LOSE ON WAIVERS:

Holmberg
Robertson

PLAYERS WE DON'T WANT TO LOSE ON WAIVERS AND SHOULD TRADE FOR SOMETHING, EVEN IF ONLY A MINIMAL RETURN:

Kampf
Jarnkrok
Timmons
Murray

PLAYERS WE CAN WAIVE WITHOUT TOO MUCH DAMAGE EVEN IF WE LOSE THEM:

Reaves
Timmons
Murray

I realize that Timmons and Murray are in both, they are bubble here and we could lose them for nothing without too much regret

PLAYERS ON IR TO START RHE SEASON

Dewar
Hakanpaa
Jarnkrok (possibly)

PLAYERS WE CAN SEND DOWN

Minten
Grebenkin
Cowan (obviously not to the Marlies)

I could see an opening lineup like this.

Knies Matthews Domi
Robertson Nylander Marner
Pacioretty Tavares McMann
Lorentz Holmberg Cowan
Reaves

Dewar (IR)

Reilly Tanev
OEL Liljegren
McCabe Benoit
Timmons

Hakanpaa (IR)

Woll
Stolarz
Murray

We trade Jarnkrok and Kampf, demote Minten and Grebenkin. We could keep Jarnkrok and waive Reaves also. We could also flip Cowan and McMann.

Once the season starts and injuries hit we can shuffle as necessary. It's a solid lineup to start the season and we don't lose any assets of value. We could even recoup a few picks and get some cap space to accrue.

With actual line up, i dont see jow leafs could move Kampf.

They're so thin at the position than they tried everything they could ex: by trying to switch nylander at C...

The only 4 option right now matthews, Jt, holmberg, Kampf...and a try with Nylander, come back with Domi with all defensive issues coming with...

Imagine moving Kampf and oops matthews or JT get injured and your felt at 2 real C... You're in trouble...

An injury after a trade is always an "oops" after the fact. Do you think there is such a huge gap between what Kampf gives us and what we could get from Holmberg, Dewar, Lorentz, Minten or even Quillan could give us in 6 ES minutes + PK every night?

If Kampf were making $975K then I might agree with you but the fact is he is eating about $1.5M too much on the cap and taking a roster spot.

If we keep Kampf what 13 forwards make our season opening roster.

Matthews
Marner
Nylander
Tavares
Domi
Knies
Robertson
Jarnkrok
Pacioretty
Dewar
Lorentz
Holmberg
Reaves
Cowan

That's 14 guys. Holmberg and Robertson are lost to waivers if they don't get a spot. Lorentz and Pacioretty can walk as UFAs. Cowan doesn't get even a nine game look. Maybe Reaves, but that doesn't save enough space. I suggest be gets waived and we go with the other 13.

Dewar starts on LTIR
Fair. You are saying you would waive Reaves, waive or trade Jarnkrok and IR Dewar?

That's a reasonable approach. I would prefer to keep Jarnkrok given the roster flexibility and lower contract commitment.

You're right though. This would work and it comes down to keeping one of Jarnkrok or Kampf.

Our fourth line won't get much ES time and i would be Ok with trading both of these guys to free up the spot and the space. We just need Marner, Dewar, Lorentz, Holmberg, Knies, and McMann to PK.

Things get interesting when Dewar is ready to return to the lineup. At this point you’re probably having to send Cowan back to junior, but I still don’t think that is best for him. If he’s playing reasonably well at that point in time, you probably have to open up space to keep him. Not sure what that looks like exactly.

Yep. Ideally we have a few bubble guys on IR to start so we can kick these decisions down the road a bit. Hakanpaa, Dewar, and Jarnkrok and waiving Reaves might be enough to start.

Kampf at least is able to play a shutdown role against top offensive line... none of player you named can do or even be close to prove they could. So at least he gave up some option in that area...

i think Jarnkrok is gone ans lorentz even with a contrat could start with the marlies. For me to move Kampf, you need better option than riggt now at C ans its not at this moment of season we will find it

Yes, Jarnkrok is another option. I don't think Kampf was good last year and I would rather get out from the contract. I don't believe Lorentz clears waivers if sent down.

What is the shut down line you see Kampf centering? How much ice time do you see that line getting a night?
