Could the Leafs pitch a trade offer for Hurricanes’ Mikko Rantanen? GM Brad Treliving ‘considering all options’

Teams are ready to pounce on Rantanen … In the East, the Florida Panthers could be a team in the running for Rantanen if Matthew Tkachuk’s long-term groin injury potentially ends his regular season. And don’t rule out the Toronto Maple Leafs either, as they could acquire Rantanen as a bit of security in case Mitch Marner decides to head to free agency on July 1. They could seamlessly replace Marner with Rantanen on a line with Auston Matthews and could probably get an extension done.

I'm pretty sure he was playing further up the lineup in Seattle, he's a 3C on a good team but Seattle isn't good

He's a 3C, a solid all situations 3C but I wouldn't expect anything more than that

I'm pretty sure Seattle would eat 50% of his money to sweeten the pot

That's probably a bit low imo
I'd try this years 2nd or 3rd + Hirvonen/Neimela + Dewar (contract dump) and see if they bite

That fills a hole and isn't particularly costly
Leafs have so little capital, I'd hesitate to use it on a depth rental.

We're not paying that price for Brayden Schenn.

If we get Brayden Schenn, it will be for much lower than that OR we will also get them to include Toropchenko in the deal too or something like that

Brayden Schenn for a cap dump and a 2nd.

Why the f*** we pay for a guy who's already underperformed his contract and on track to make it even worse.

Is Rantanen going to be a rental?

The trying to process wtf happened to me Rantanen sounds like he just might go to UFA and figure out where he wants to be.

That would be a good thing right?

Sounds like Robertson might want to stay... for now.

The 23-year-old, who bent to management’s pre-camp leverage and signed an $875,000 contract to prove himself, denies any anxiety surrounding March 7. This, despite his pending restricted free agency (again) and the occasional round of murmurs that he could be packaged out of town.

“I want to be here, so I’m fine. Yeah, I don’t think about that stuff,” Robertson says Wednesday, following a team practice at Warrior Ice. “I’ve been worried about my day off tomorrow, doing what I got to do.”

It is funny that if teams were reversed and we had a B. Schenn to trade, we'd get articles saying the Leafs would need to add for teams to take him on. Guaranteed.
I believe Dregs or someone else was also saying Laughton would cost a first. What the f***?

IMO he's still gone to an upgrade this TDL. He's inline if not behind his 55 game mark last year from an output perspective and as much as I enjoy rooting for his 10-15g per year that's probably his ceiling unless he can develop more of a two-way game (ie speed, defensive IQ), or get strong and play a grittier game a la Marchand. I think he's gone as soon as they can find a reasonable upgrade.

Okay so I know he's not exactly a position of need, but would Nashville consider sending us Marchessault? Always liked him.

Maybe package in a Luke Schenn or two with him.

I'm not sure what's going on with Rantanen. He's not playing well, might be in shock at having been moved. He rejected Colorado's offer, now he isn't accepting Carolina's. He keeps getting moved to be someone else's problem. He won't be cheap, that much is for sure, not a price you'd pay for a rental, or that we should pay maybe.

I think it's probable he goes to UFA, he's been offered over $100 million x 8 years, was asking for $14 mil x 8 years. So Carolina offered over $12.5 mil per, rumoured to be $13 mil by some, and he hasn't accepted that. Colorado offered $11.75, which wasn't accepted, so they moved him.

Is he a guy we look at, and say... we need him for $14 mil? I'd say no...

I just dont see Rantanen happening. Isn't a positional fit and would cause issues. Also think other teams would pony up more assets than what we can give anyways

I wonder if the Kings decide to dangle Byfield for Rantanen. Kings need a offensive game breaker to go past the Oilers

The idea of Rantanen on this team tickles my fancy, but is Carolina really giving up Necas for him and then flipping him for... Whatever we can muster?
I think it's more likely than not they just self-rental him and he walks in the summer. The Canes clearly misjudged the situation and thought they were more likely to sign him than they really are

If they want to recoup some assets, they'll certainly have a crazy number of bidders. This will be the best rental in a long time, since like Hossa in 08. We'll probably be outbid but it'd be nice to be in the conversation

I refuse to believe it. This is just pure non sense click bait that makes no sense. This team talks about adding a center since training, and a defender, mostly trying to find a fit with their limited cap space and limited valuable assets to trade... and Kypreos comes in with the Rantanen non sense.

Hate the Laughton talks.

This is a player that goes out there and does nothing.

Either pony up and get a real upgrade, or don't waste any assets going after garbage

It makes SOME sense but the price seems really tough to swallow. He'd be a pretty solid upgrade somewhere and isn't a rental. He checks boxes. He's not sexy or amazing.

It wouldn't shock me to see LA move Byfield for Cozens, and then more Clarke to Carolina for Rantanen.

All of these costs for mostly mid or over the hill players is insane to me.

On top of that to hear we're being linked to them or have an interest is also discouraging.

I am really hoping Tree isn't seriously going down the road of the Schenn brothers.
It's a Maple Leaf tradition to target over the hill rentals
