What's better is that as a Leaf he's produced at near that same career pace just at even strength (38pt pace), with almost no PP time or production (only 6pp pts in 3 seasons as a Leaf).

still, though, still a contract to move in our current situation imo.
I'd agree, but just to drive home even strength production.

Kerfoot has 92 even strength points in his 3 seasons (203 games) as a Leaf. 93rd in the league among Forwards over that time.

Here are some players with similar ES totals:
PL Dubois - 95 pts in 197 gp
Eberle - 92 pts in 192 gp
Nick Suzuki - 91 pts in 209 gp
And a final crazy one considering the year he just had
Chris Kreider - 87 pts in 194gp

You wouldn't really assess a player like Crouse just for his points. He had 20 goals playing in a very bad team

He also led the team in hits, willing to drop the gloves and can be a solid net presence

Last time we had a player was Owen Nolan and Roberts

Most ppl forget to add that his 34 points came in 65 games span. Full season he probably gets 40+ points

Would take a Crouse over overhyped overloved players like Kerfoot Engvall and Mikaheyev

Who when push comes to shoves goes into a corner and just cries
the last player we had like Crouse was Nick Ritchie lol. He's bad at everything besides physical play and having a scoring touch in front of the net

Kerfoot was 33-35 points prior to last season and a third of his points this year were secondary assists. They don't need to spend $3.5M for a 12 goal winger with their current cap situation.

He gets almost no power play time though.

Shedding his salary now is only helpful if they can immediately replace it with better guys - and at this point in free agency I'm not sure better options are out there.

While I wouldn't necessarily sign him to an extension at the same cap hit - treating him as an 'own rental' seems fine to me.

the one thing being that his caphit-to-salary ratio should theoretically make him more valuable as a trade piece than normal.

though the cap situation is so tight league wide this year that that theory might fail.

Interesting. Surprised he only got a 1 year

Makes a lot of sense - money dried up quick and he was left without a chair. This way he gets his money this year and gets to try again with a fresh market and his new power-agent next year.

We could see the same thing with Kadri - although as Naz is 2 years older and coming off a career year, he's more likely to want to get something long-term.

he hits, leafs don't have any hitters, even the guys who have size play a soft game
ultimately they need people that hit and block shots but at least hit to make it harder on other teams d. get them to make mistakes and then take advantage with all that skill leafs have
If our main objective of getting players is because they hit, we may as well have stuck with the Nonis era. Sure the team was bad but they hit and thats the important thing.
I say this as someone who wouldn't mind getting Crouse

That Klingberg deal is wild and weird.

In the last 5 years his production mirrors Rielly (8th/9th highest scoring D).. he’s probably comparable defensively and he’s a RHD

How are teams not offering him more on a longer deal? Unless he wants Jones/Nurse money?

Klingberg has been pacing around 50 points the last 4 years (5 years ago was the last time he even paced above 60 points). Rielly has had a 68 and 72 point season in that time, has been pacing almost 65 points overall the past 4 years, and Rielly has relied less on PP to put up those points. Rielly has a been better defensively as well, and he has had less support than Klingberg in terms of his partners.

Now obviously our offense is better than Dallas', so it is probably easier for Rielly to put up more points. But we are talking about 10-15 more points, and he is a better overall defenseman than Klingberg (at least since Klingberg was like 25).

I think teams are looking at Klingberg as an offensive defenseman who has not really put up elite production recently and they are not willing to commit to the term at this point. One year at 7 mill is actually more than I thought he would get, so he did fairly well there. It is a lot like Hall and I imagine if he doesn't totally suck, he will get something in 5.5-6.5 mill range on a 4 or 5 year deal next offseason. It is not a bad bet for him because at least he is getting more than he is worth for that one year and he is going somewhere where he can really showcase himself before moving to another team at the TDL.

The main thing I think more than anything is he needs another playoff like the 21 points in 26 games when Dallas went on their Cup run, and not the 1 point in 7 games like this past playoffs.

In a world where Gudbranson got $4x4, it’s shocked Klingberg can’t find a team to give him a lucrative deal

Definitely getting the Taylor Hall to Buffalo vibe from that apparent Klingberg contract with Anaheim - go big on a one year deal and hope to parlay that into a trade at the deadline plus a long-term contract with the new team (or yet another one via free agency). I'd still probably place this signing closely to that of Gaudreau's as my surprise (signing) of the offseason.
