I need creative people here to think tank this issue because the own rental thing is what's been going on in leaf land. Even if we win a cup this year it's going to be next year's problem. I'm glad you like Bunting, but I'm afraid he's going to be gone next season. Why not get some assets, players with term, fill in with Bunting as a main piece.

More than anything else we need to exercise patience. Almost all of our top prospects are LW. Knies, Robertson, Amirov, Holmberg, Voit…. All guys who play LW. Before committing big dollars to any LW, we really need these guys to show what they’ve got.

We could very soon be one of the deepest teams at LW, as much as it’s been a weakness for us to date. Or, we could still be weak. But let’s see where the year goes. Let’s see how each of these respective guys does this year, each in their own way. I mean if we get lucky (doesn’t often happen) we could have Robertson, Knies and Amirov on the roster next year, and we might not care about Bunting.

But let’s see where we go.

"The Chicago Blackhawks are expected to trade forward Patrick Kane this season. Kane holds a full no-movement clause and will have to provide his stamp of approval on his next destination. Sounds like a few teams are trying to get a jump on the others, as Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff made note that the New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs have all reached out to Chicago regarding the asking price."

Game on.

Well it is good that we were talking to good goalie prospects, and were also selecting good goalie prospects at the time.

Scott was a top notch goalie prospect who could have easily been challenging for an NHL job right now had he stayed healthy. Instead, he is just another case of why the guy who is in charge of strength, conditioning, and injury prevention/recovery for our goalies in this organization should not have a job... Woll, Scott, Mrazek, Andersen, apparently Campbell too. Kind of odd that a lot of their recurring injury issues seem to only pop up here.

Are you referring to Louis Rojas or is there a different person for the goalies?

Isn't Bunting a pending UFA? I don't think Chicago would be interested in that.
The only reason Chicago takes an older NHL player in return is to balance out the cap in the trade or to flip the player to another organization for picks. No other reason. Otherwise this type of trade is about acquiring prospects for a team like Chicago. Think about 1st round picks, Knies, Minten, Sandin, Liljegren, Robertson as pieces in such a trade. My guess is it's 2x1st plus Knies plus Sandin plus whatever is necessary to balance the cap is the type of thing Chicago would be asking for.

I still say Patrick Kane makes little sense as a target other than as appearance of doing something major. There's only 1 first power play. Practically only 1 can take shifts with Matthews. Does Kane bump Marner off Matthews' line? Does Nylander become a 3rd liner? I mean Marner is our Kane type player and William Nylander is another Kane type player. 3 Kane type players is an overload on a certain type of talent. This isn't a fantasy team or a video game. There are many other crucial talents on championship teams than just swift legged right handers with great hands.

For the cost, would there not be other long term assets that could be acquired who give you more than 1 opportunity to win it all?

With the NHL going all in for 1st. overall or the Cup relies on luck staying the heck away.

If we got Patrick Kane at the cost of huge futures, you'd think we'd have to agree on a modest contract extension of some length, and we would have a domino fall i.e. a bigger ticket contract go out the door to balance it out next season.

I played with Capfriendly yesterday, and going with 11 forwards 6 defenders and a slight cap increase they could re-sign him for 7mm * 5. So ages 35-39.

Maybe he'd take the Malkin deal, 6.1 * 4?

From my armchair POV, next offseason will be interesting because the cap will be in the last season of the flat cap condition, but many of our contracts come off the books. I can't see a world with Kane being a Leaf at $6 million and Nylander or Muzzin remaining in Toronto.

The other concern I have with giving up a big youth package for Kane is it doesn’t leave a lot of assets to fuel the Leafs contention on the next Matthews contract. Hesitant to see the prospect pipeline run dry.

Voices in your head is not a 'growing narrative".
That's not a good look. I'm referencing the many posts about how the GM's tenure should be dictated by what Matty wants which has now been extended to Bunting.

Matty needs to focus on his job, which presumably is what he is doing and will do.

Kane would/should give you a dominant 2nd line that Tavares/Nylander have failed to give us.

Would a sandin for formenton swap work out. Young left wing with size
I would do it from a value perspective

Issue is formenton was part of that world Jr CAD team which is/was under investigation for sexually assaulting a female.

Don't know the details to well on the situation so don't want to comment to much on the issue
