If there's any player that stays it's probably him tbh, he clearly likes being a Leaf being from the city and all. Could be wrong though. Maybe another hometown discount?

First off I don't have a problem with him. People will present many reasons for not trading him and they would be perfectly valid.

I just see many own-rentals on the horizon. Bunting is a lot of what we have already, but not as skilled as our big contract forwards. There's no question that he'll likely find a new contract with a team willing to pay him like a top 6 winger. Toronto will lose him for nothing. if people see some kind of sneaky value here then why doesn't Dubas move him for a forward who offers something different. Matthews is learning to impose his size more, Marner is not imposing, and Bunting does not impose much.

Would a left winger with size and jam (and with term) be the most prudent thing here.

Toronto doesn't have prospects or draft picks to bring in a different player. Bunting could be the guy.

I'm just trying to think creatively here because the own rental line-up has been too loaded for too long.

So who is this left winger, with size and jam, and is signed with term, at a reasonable cap hit for what they bring? That we can also fit in, this year, on the cap just by moving Bunting?

The challenge being... if they are as good as Bunting, they cost just as much as Bunting would have, and you are back at square one.

I mean, I come up with two names.... Crouse's contract is gross. Comtois, who needs a new contract at the end of the year, and wasn't very good last year, for a multitude of reasons.... but basically, your only option is maybe Comtois. Comtois's cap hit this year, is also double Buntings... causing us issues this year.

Not to mention, Bunting and Matty are buddies, and now you've pissed off Matty.

I respect your opinion. I will name some names soon. But as for your Bunting buddies comment...I mean Matthews was also buddies with Marleau. It's pro sports. Players accept that things like this happen.

Maybe someone has a creative solution to the own rentals that are about to go out the door. Sign all of them? It's possible..

The top heavy Leafs can't always re-sign players easily though.

So we are going to trade one guy who has some grit ( althoug I think his gritty game is a bit overhyped)
A player that's from Toronto, has decent chemistry can get us 20 goals for an aging veteran?

Why trade a very likeable player who can produce for someone who may or may not fit ?

I need creative people here to think tank this issue because the own rental thing is what's been going on in leaf land. Even if we win a cup this year it's going to be next year's problem. I'm glad you like Bunting, but I'm afraid he's going to be gone next season. Why not get some assets, players with term, fill in with Bunting as a main piece.

Isn't Bunting a pending UFA? I don't think Chicago would be interested in that.
Kane is too, but he’s a game changer.

I don’t know if Bunting is what Chicago would want, but if they did, I’d like to think Dubas could navigate his way to getting a deal done.

I know what you mean but Bunting is a tough one. I feel like he'd take a bit of a discount. He gets to play with 2 of the best players in the world and be in his home town. I know Hyman was a similar case and he bolted. I guess it depends a lot on this year.

I do agree too many times Leafs haven't got assets for expiring contracts they probably should of but Bunts I think could be a guy that they could keep around if they get the right average and term.

Kerfoot probably goes at the end of the year. Maybe Holl too just by walking. That frees up quite a bit for Bunting. You also hope the Leafs get lucky and hit on some of these young guys so they have a couple forwards really cheap for the next few years.

I think some posters on here are forgetting the fact that the ultimate goal is the cup and only the cup.not respect in handshake lines,or a playoff win. The cup
You have to ask yourself if this is the year we win the cup with the team we are putting on the ice right now.

If you think it is then we should do whatever it takes to win regardless of draft picks or prospects.

If I’m thinking it is then Kane would be my big add.

Id pass on the bunting trade. I actually see him as a good candidate for a longer term (to lower aav) extension.
But letting him walk is a non-option.

He has zero playoff mileage in his professional career and fills a desperate stylistic need without averaging overly high hit outputs season-to-season, so he's likely to age better than other options who play his type of game.

Having Dubas' and Keefe here I think is a major sell for him.

The Leafs would likely just need to give him the total of money he'd make on a two year deal with another team spread out over a longer period. Like over 4-6 years worth of term. That way he'd get money and job security

Having another buddy of Matthews on the team also wouldn't hurt for other reasons too....
