So we could draft another D man, who might be as good as Sandin, and is ready to transition into the lineup maybe in 2027 or 28?
If they trade Sandin that means contract talks went no where and the relationship over. It is better to convert Sandin into first round picks (pick*) since this is easier to trade with the added benefit you can also choose to just draft and develop.

The latest news suggests that they are only a couple hundred k apart... you don't sever a relationship based on that.

Yes true but I was saying what's implied if they did end up trading him. And if that did happen it's better to have Sandin in the same form Rangers now have for Lundkvist. Thats a nice pick too since Dallas wont finish top 10 this year and have bust potential that gives small hope it's a top 10 pick in 2024.

Liljegren injured to start (for training camp at least), and Subban retiring.
Tips the scale slightly more to Sandin not being traded, imo.

A few days ago Mirtle was saying it seems like there's at least a couple guys on the team who wont be healthy to play to start the season. Gives management more flexibility with contract signings and trades too

Johnston was on the Leafs report with Siegel and Mirtle. Anybody listen to it yet? Anything juicy?

Absolutely nothing noteworthy. Just talked about Sandin and how the Leafs really like him. Spoke about Matthews next contract a bit and if the Mackinnon contract affects it at all. They said it probably doesn't as he was going to come in at a higher amount than McDavid anyways. They said they believe he signs an extension with the Leafs but not sure if its something short term like 3 - 5 years.
Overall nothing really concrete, just talking.

Not much that was juicy, but a good season preview talk about the Leafs. The bits that pertain this thread though:

-Matthews might not sign for 8 years for his next contract. Purely speculating though. Both sides might want less years for a few reasons -- keep cap down, flexibility, etc

-Sandin and the Leafs want to get something done, they aren't far apart. They've been talking a lot. Might get done fast. Engvall and Liljegren very likely going on LTIR which will probably create urgency to gain a NHL body.

-Bunting will be hard to keep for the Leafs if he has another great season. Too early to know if the Leafs and Bunting can get something done. Leafs have not committed to many players outside of the core.

-Kane to the Leafs is typical August boredom rumours. Johnston denies it and has not heard the Leafs being seriously interested in Kane. Nothing to it for the Leafs at this time.

-Kerfoot not likely to be traded. Underrated and had a good year. Not untouchable but no reason to believe he'll be traded anytime soon.

@andora <---- Thought this guy was nuts yesterday rambling about the possibility Matthews would want a shorter deal than 8 years but literally half a day later we read the deal might not be 8 years.

Can't make this stuff up.
