I don't think I'd be shocked if we add PK Subban to a min league deal for 1 year. Would that shock anyone here?

I think it would depend on how everything shakes out. Mete and Benn may not make it through waivers. Holl may be traded (once Sandin is signed). Depending on what the cap situation looks like, maybe he is signed at that point so he won't need waivers if they can fit an extra d-man under the cap.

I mean I guess Mete could be claimed since he is only 24, but the one-way salary should be a deterrent.

There are better UFA's still out there than Benn, so I don't see why teams would want to claim him.

Neither would be major blows honestly. We should have at least one depth guy ahead of either, and I don't think they are going to perform any better than some of the other guys we should be able to slip through waivers.

If you're moving Kerfoot you have to have someone in mind to take over his role with the team. This is why a team has a pro scouting department. Find an available forward making $2M and under who you believe can take over this role.

Some other interesting RFA situations to watch heading into camp:

- the big one is Jason Robertson, still a RFA with Dallas. Some comps like Kyrou and other young stars should have helped settle that by now though...
- Barrett Hayton
- Alex Formenton
- Sean Durzi
- Nic Hague

I wonder if the trade market dried up...

I also think the Sandin statement prevented the Leafs from willingly moving Holl ..

ZAR was dumped by a team headed to the playoffs while Motte was acquired by a team headed to the playoffs.

Tyler Motte was extremely overrated at the deadline. There were rumors of the Canucks looking for a "top 40 pick" to get him.

Hardev: Your contract status doesn’t change your quality and ability. Sandin is great, he’s better than Liljegren in a vacuum where position and handedness doesn’t matter, he’s going to be the second pair left defenseman for the Leafs well within 18 months. Unfortunately right now they’re in a rut. The reason why he’s not signed for the same or less than Liljegren is because he’s better and deserves $2-3 million on even a one or two year deal. That’s what all his peers are signing for. I’m not sure how this ends, but I would much rather have Rasmus Sandin than one year of Kerfoot or Holl. I would make the move and pay him.

I love Rasmus but this seems like a really bad take. Even if you ignore his comparison between Liljegren and Sandin (which is highly debatable) that valuation is way off

Agreed. In a vacuum IMO Liljegren is better today - and showed it as last season progressed. But things can and do change, as at the end of the prior season Sandin was the one who had the edge.

They are similar in value, Sandin has no basis for getting more than Liljegren.

Picks/prospects for Nils Lundkvist then Holl for a bag of pucks. I'd be willing to trade any of the Leafs' current prospects to build up future certainty on the right side.

Lundkvist and "future certainty" do not belong in the same sentence. He is a reclamation project who belongs in the AHL right now, and even if he turns out, he is an offensive defenseman who would have a very niche role which is not in super high demand.

For the right price, he is probably better than having Rindell or Hollowell on our depth chart as offensive defensemen. The problem is that the Rangers probably want a 2nd or something out of him and he is not worth it at that price. We can get better prospects out of a late 2nd than Lundkvist.

Reclamation project? Get real. He's a legit talent buried in a depth chart.

He's talented sure, but he's not buried behind a deep dcorps in NYR. He just wasn't very good when he played even against soft matchups (unlike guys like Sandin and Lilly who dominated those matchups).

He is a prestigious prospect with success in Europe and is still young but was atrocious in the NHL and didn't do much better in the AHL.

He is a textbook reclamation project. What has he done in North America to suggest otherwise?

New York Rangers right side defense:
Adam Fox
Jacob Trouba
20 year old Braden Schneider who played every playoff game last season (20 games)

Because everyone else sucked and they had literally no one else. He was the best option out of a really bad pool of options. So the exact opposite of what you are trying to claim.

Shestyerkin covered up for a lot.

yeah getting clean beat out for a spot by a younger guy who wasn't great himself isn't a good thing.
