If this is the case I’m disappointed in the return.
I have lots of people interested in guys on my fantasy teams every year, but I don't make many trades because most of the time they're trying to rip me off. Teams can claim they were interested all that they want, but let's see what the offers were. Of course, sometimes teams leak trade offers and who knows whether they're real or BS.

I think they got about as much as they could possibly have hoped for given that Blackwood is just an average goalie at best.

Rental? No. But teams are beginning to get desperate as shown by the Devils trade for Markstrom. Granted he had another year left, but they didn't have to send a camp dump back and Markstrom makes significantly more money (nixed by the retention). And frankly, Blackwood has been a better goaltender recently and is 6 years younger.
The contract status has a material effect on the value, Ryan Miller is the last pending UFA to be traded for a 1st round pick mid season, that was 11 seasons ago and he was a perennial Vezina candidate

Colorado proved they were desperate by trading a 2nd round pick, as Grier pointed out in his media availability the last two goalies to be traded for 2nd rounders were recent Vezina finalists in Fleury and Lehner

Blackwood is not in that conversation, he's a decent platoon goalie having a strong stretch on a bad team, Colorado overpaid for Blackwood by the precedent of previous goalie trades precisely because they were so desperate, Grier did a great job here, you are just expecting too much

I don't see it as overpaying. They paid the correct price for the top available goaltender when the demand far exceeded the supply. Taking back Geo even with retention was probably the value of the 2nd, but secretly I do think Grier targeted Colorado and Georgiev because he isn't interested in overachieving this season. Frankly the idea of platoon goalies is for the most part how most teams will be going forward and I wouldn't be surprised if they even try and upgrade from Wedgewood even though they just got him.

I mean we can see very clearly which teams desperately need goaltending help. I would be shocked if Edmonton goes into the playoffs with the tandem they have now. Same with Carolina.

Taking Georgiev back at 3 mil at this stage isn’t worth a 2nd. It’s maybe worth a 3rd. Blackwood has no business returning a 2nd on his own. Goalies just don’t go for that and he doesn’t have that much of a track record. Kovalenko was the price for taking Georgiev back. He may end up just being a 3rd liner here but that can be of value after we rent out Kunin.

He should net us quite a bit once he takes the lead in the race for the Rocket Richard trophy.

I find it pretty funny that before the season, Blackwood was ranked (by yahoo fantasy, so there's a slant for sure) lower than both Georgiev and Anunen. Now, all of a sudden, he is their savior and we get articles like this: https://thehockeynews.com/news/with...vaulted-themselves-back-into-contender-status

Hasn't even played a game in COL but already has shed his issues and "vaulted" the Avs lol

TBF, in fantasy, with goalies especially some of that is going to be related to the quality of the team. Even knowing how solid Blackwood could be, I sure as hell wasn't going to risk my team's GAA by drafting a Sharks goalie!

That being said, I did get Blackwood off waivers in the past couple weeks when two of my teams had goalie injury problems, so now I might have a real gem if he can continue his good play but get more wins and have a lower GAA with the Avs.

Lot of variables involved, but I can't see Blackwood's value going up that much. Teams drop out of the race, some teams figure out their problems, and Blackwood him could regress a little (certainly very possible once the games for the Sharks become truly meaningless).

Teams drop, the time to get comfortable playing behind a certain defense shrinks, the games played shrinks, etc.

Colorado wasn't going to get more desperate, but rather they were going to go elsewhere to fill their goaltending issues. So as you said, it was the right time to strike while the iron was hot.

Taking Georgiev back isn’t worth really anything. He expires this year. Maybe it changed that 2nd from a 3rd but that’s probably about it.

From a cap perspective, it is worth something. It just isn't much. A Georgiev cap dump at the deadline would be worth around a 4th round pick. Now when it's three months out from the deadline, it's worth slightly more and that's only maybe a 3rd round pick. A player of Kovalenko's profile is largely a throw-in since he's an older NHL rookie with little draft pedigree playing on Colorado's 3rd line but underproducing that role. Blackwood is probably worth a 3rd round pick on his own. I think the dump helped to elevate Blackwood's return value.

Also keep in mind other teams with goalies on the market (CGY, Chicago, Anaheim) could have retained. We were almost certainly going to have to take back Georgiev, but there's usually marginal value in trading a pending UFA at 50% rather than at 100%. Without being able to do that, Georgiev's inclusion would have always been expected, not a value add.
