HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread #93: Y'all got any more of those 2nd line centers out there?

I don’t watch Zegras enough, but the few times I did watch him this year, he has underwhelmed. For some reason he doesn’t even seem to be up to his old tricks. It is like he is depressed or something. Odd. I know he has struggled with injuries over the last few years, but something else seems to be wrong.

Zegras is awful and exactly what we don't need. He is a perimeter trickster who does not defend.....he profiles as a top six forward on bad teams unless he re-invents his game.

I agree that we need a 2nd line center and it is awfully difficult to pinpoint who is the best target when considering age, contract, availability, acquisition cost, play style etc

I don't think that there are too many youngish centers available who can play that high in the lineup and are available for a reasonable cost. The free agent pool will be a guaranteed overspend although that is mitigated somewhat by the absence of an acquisition cost that involves assets.

There are some moves on the trade front that could target older players who still have some gas in the tank but some of them have contracts that are uncomfortably long.

Kadri and Monahan are the two that come to mind as perfect fits but are on longer contracts that likely won't age well over the last 2 years. Kadri grew up as a huge Hab fan and Calgary may be willing to move him due to the length of his contract. Because he is still a very good player despite being 34 they may not want to move him as he would be irreplaceable in a moment where the organization seems to be moving in the right direction. Monahan is 3 years younger than Kadri and 1.5M cheaper but the injury history is always there lingering in the back ground. He may not even be open to moving despite loving his time in Montreal as he may have a very deep commitment to Colombus due to his love for Johnny Hockey and a need to fulfill the commitment that he made to the organization and his best friend. Both of these guys would be perfect beside Demidov for the next two seasons at least but there are many factors to consider and I am not at all certain that Hughes would seriously entertain these options.

Dallas also offers a couple of interesting older UFA's who might be amenable to signing shorter term deals in either one of Duchene or Granlund.
Kadri could be an excellent pickup.............and as much as I love Moneyhands Monahan, he is injured way too often for that contract.

1- Duchene
2-O'Reilly
3- Barzal
Barzal contract is insane. Hard pass on him.
Duchene or O’Reilly would be much better choices for sure. If Islanders are rebuilding, Horvat is the better target. Hes also overpaid but not nearly as bad as Barzal. Probably cost too high of a price trade value wise though.

Pittsburgh rebuild, Crosby to Montreal to finish out. It's going to happen, I can feel it in my bones.
Dude some players want to play for one team the rest of their careers! It’s not happening! Ovie and Sid are staying in one place

I think KH will definitely inquire at the very least. It’d be insane not to. Even though he will be 38 before next season, that would still shake up the hockey world.
Molsons eyes would light up with $ - $
The buzz around Montreal for every home game would be insane. 😂

I think he stays in Pittsburgh until he retires unfortunately, but I bet if he is willing to move, he will request a trade to Montreal or stay in Pittsburgh

In Horvat case, I would ask to Islander to retain like 1,5 millions on Horvat contract. Chicago did it on Seth jones. I prefer to have Horvat at 7 millions on the cap hit over 8,5 personnally.

Barzal shouldn't be a target for us but his contract is fine. In both of these cases Montreal's negotiating advantage is that we don't need the other team to retain. The cap is going to rise significantly over the next 3-4 seasons and most of our important players are locked in. Trading for either guy would basically just be replacing Laine's current salary and we don't have to sign Demidov until the summer Gallagher and Anderson both expire. Horvat's 8.5 under the 113.5M cap in 2027 will be the equivalent of 6.6M contract today.

What a beer with that? Joke apart, Lou is not trading Horvat so he’s not gonna retain salary lmfao

Duchene is the perfect target for us, and apparently it was between us and Nashville last time he signed somewhere. I suspect they hold off on any big trades at the draft this year because they'll want to at least take a swing at him first.

If we can land Duchene without giving away any assets that would be huge. Imagine replacing 26 point Alex Newhook with another PPG potential player. Have to imagine Duchene and Demidov would be sick together. 3 year deal would be ideal. I don't necessarily see the need to trade for a young 2c with Hage coming up in the next 3 years, and the team wants to get back into contender status as soon as next year.
Then keep whatever trade pieces we would have used for a 2c and upgrade the RD situation.

That's my perfect scenario off season.
Duchene is the correct answer. Term will be more reasonable than Bennett, if SB is even going to be available. Legit 2C, LH shot. Aside from the pipe dream of Crosby I'm not sure I've seen a trade acquisition centre who would be that exciting, so landing MD for just the salary is the way to go.

Malkin could be more « affordable » in terms of players or picks to trade for him. Malkin-Demidov could be a killer combo.

Well, he is in Dallas now. But yes, he is the one with the recording studio. He said in a recent interview that he kept his home in Nashville, and that he intends to retire there.

So yes, Duchene is not an option.
There is a Duchene thread on main board. Quoting an article from French writer saying he didn't want to sign in Montreal. Bad, because he would have been good fit

My buddy says go after Horvat/Puloch on the Islansers, get 2C/RD double whammy

Send whatever it takes (reasonably speaking of course)
And I think he's onto something

Thoughts
Horvat 30 years old and 6 more years at $8.5 million. That's going to be bad contract in our cup years. Plus teams he's been on have underachieved. He's going to costs a ton to acquire, might as well get a younger center
