Zegras is awful and exactly what we don't need. He is a perimeter trickster who does not defend.....he profiles as a top six forward on bad teams unless he re-invents his game.
I agree that we need a 2nd line center and it is awfully difficult to pinpoint who is the best target when considering age, contract, availability, acquisition cost, play style etc
I don't think that there are too many youngish centers available who can play that high in the lineup and are available for a reasonable cost. The free agent pool will be a guaranteed overspend although that is mitigated somewhat by the absence of an acquisition cost that involves assets.
There are some moves on the trade front that could target older players who still have some gas in the tank but some of them have contracts that are uncomfortably long.
Kadri and Monahan are the two that come to mind as perfect fits but are on longer contracts that likely won't age well over the last 2 years. Kadri grew up as a huge Hab fan and Calgary may be willing to move him due to the length of his contract. Because he is still a very good player despite being 34 they may not want to move him as he would be irreplaceable in a moment where the organization seems to be moving in the right direction. Monahan is 3 years younger than Kadri and 1.5M cheaper but the injury history is always there lingering in the back ground. He may not even be open to moving despite loving his time in Montreal as he may have a very deep commitment to Colombus due to his love for Johnny Hockey and a need to fulfill the commitment that he made to the organization and his best friend. Both of these guys would be perfect beside Demidov for the next two seasons at least but there are many factors to consider and I am not at all certain that Hughes would seriously entertain these options.
Dallas also offers a couple of interesting older UFA's who might be amenable to signing shorter term deals in either one of Duchene or Granlund.
