He's actually 4th in icetime for forwards at 5v5 but I don't even know why that's a relevant stat. He played 1 min less than Svechnikov, does that mean the Canes consider them to be equally valuable?

He's definitely not a good player and the Canes would obviously upgrade on their "2C" who was getting less than 13 minutes of ice time just last year. Is Dvorak that player? No of course not, but to say that they wouldn't trade their "2C" is incredibly disingenuous because he's not even close to being good enough for a 2C on a contender.
They wouldn't trade him for Dvorak. Any team would upgrade on a player if they could of course.

Hey, have at it.

"The return would have to be significant." I love the way this guy thinks.

A major caveat: "he injured Petey".

Would love to entertain offers from Vancouver, but as soon as you start exchanging bodies like we'd take Soucy back just for sake of replacing Matheson and feeding the tank, then you realize the Canucks have nothing much to give. Their prospect pool is shallow, so they'd have to get creative somehow.

Trading Matheson at a time when we are looking to build up to 4 top-3 d-men and 4 first line forwards is only logical if we get a core player back at a minimum. Draft picks lower than top-5 overall can't be the centerpiece.

Yeah that's not realistic IMO.

I was wrong on him and I do think his work ethic sucks but he's (KK) still their 2C and has been doing well for them, he's well worth the 5m. He plays the 2nd most minutes of all forwards at 5v5. I mean, last year here started strong too and he massively crashed out so I'm not sure the trend continues but he is for all intent and purpose, a "good" player. 2018 is another very bad draft, kinda like 2022.
OMG.

Kotkaniemi has about the same AAV as Matheson. His production is way below par for a top-6 forward (doing well??), and if you want to tout his minutes, then why do you crap on Matheson whose stamina is legendary?

You also add that you believe that KK's work ethic sucks. BUT HE'S WELL WORTH (almost) $5M !!

It's really hard to figure out the logic behind these two takes of yours.

Take a look at the players around him at his salary. He's not a good 2C and I believe he could've been a lot more than what he is if, as I said, he had a better work ethic.

With that said, he's within 500k of (Bolded are better players than him.) :
Joel Eriksson-Ek
Charlie Coyle
Yanni Gourde
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
Bryan Rust
Evander Kane
J.T. Compher
Kyle Palmieri
Jared McCann
Ivan Barbashev

Anton Lundell
Mikael Granlund
Alex Wennberg
Dylan Strome
Ryan Strome
Joel Farabee
Drake Batherson
Conor Garland
Jordan Eberle
Alex Tuch
Blake Coleman
Vladimir Tarasenko
Pavel Zacha
Ilya Mikheyev
Mikael Backlund
Ryan O'reilly
Michael Bunting
Brandon Saad
Nick Foligno
Mason Marchment
Arturri Lekhonne

Christian Dvorak
Filip Chytil
Sam Bennett

He has fair middle 6 forward tweener value. I think it's your conception of what a middle 6 player should be paid that is erroneous.

Why do the Habs need Batherson? They already have scoring wingers with Laine coming back from injury and Demidov coming at the end of the year (or this summer).

You're just creating holes to fill a hole that will fill itself by just waiting. Remove Newhook and it's still a no just based on needs.

Batherson is a beast , plays good on both end of the ice

CC-Suzuki-Batherson
Slaf-Dach-Laine

That's a real top 6

Would you do Jake Sanderson for Caufield + Ridley Greig ?

Trading a top pair D at 22 for a soon to be 27 years old 2nd liner is a hell of a trade.
We don't need Sanderson but we sure could use Batherson.

We can spare Guhle with Matheson-Hutson-Wifi-Struble in the lineup.
Maybe we'll draft Scheafer this year.

We can spare our best defender ? My guy have you seen the defense when Guhle is playing on the right side, let alone injured ? There's a reason this team stabilizes the moment he's on the ice. Leads the D-squad in 5V5 Points over the last three years, leads in hits, leads in blocked shots, leads in GF, leads in QOC, leads in every single stat you can find. It's a ridiculous notion that we can spare Guhle.

We don't need Batherson we have Demidov, Caufield, Slaf, Laine, Dach, where is he gonna play?

I just don't see why would Ottawa trade either of them.

Sanderson would become our defacto best dman, and is their soon-to-be number 1 D (if he isn't already), he would cost a fortune that we're not in a position to give, and Batherson is cost-controlled for another year, and one of their top FWDs.

I also don't see why they'd be interested in Guhle.

The guy who definitely wasn’t Slafy sure makes some awesome trade proposals. Among the best on here. Definitely knows the respective players and their positions as well. We’re lucky to have the poster who definitely wasn’t Slafy, and his wealth of knowledge.

The fact they have one retention slot available is what can limit what trades they make.

What works in Dvorak's favor is that he's a center. And teams always look for center depth for their playoff pushes. He's strong on the dot and is good on the PK. Teams value that. Now what HuGo need to assess is if it's more valuable to retain on Dvorak or Savard. I think Savard holds the most value and a retention on him might net the Habs a 1st Round Pick, whereas Dvorak, even with retention, won't.

And how sweet would it be heading into the draft with three 1st round picks?

There is also Evans that is going to be attracting teams. Much like Dvorak, he's good on the dot, good on the PK and a real good defensive forward. And his contract is much easier to move than Dvorak's. They probably don't even need to retain on Evans.
Long gone the day we get a 1st round pick for Savard, retention or not.

Better value back retaining on Matheson, offering an offensive, veteran option for a playoff run and an entire season after that at merely 2.4375M.

Matheson at that price and that term ought to net a late 1st rounder and a solid prospect, IMO.

Even if retaining salary on Matheson rather than Dvorak means keeping the latter and getting nothing for him, the greater return from moving Matheson --and retaining on him to maximize the return -- would be well worthwhile.

No, 100% stupid trade. Habs don't need winger. They need a top rd and 2c and get ride of Matheson so Guhle can switch to his natural side

Demidov hasn't played a game at center since he was 15 years old.

Not true. He was at C for a handful of MHL regular season games and the first round of the MHL playoffs last year. He has not played C in the KHL as far as I’ve seen this year.

I think he projects easier as a winger but a move to C is within the realm of possibility.
