Serious question; let’s say we get the 5th pick, would you trade that pick, Winnipeg’s first and our first next year for 1st overall this year. I didn’t use the Calgary pick next year as I think it has the least value of the three on draft day this year

Yes and I'd add Calgary's pick too

They will still turn us down..

The team holding #1 wouldn't do it.

And I'm not sure I would without protection on our first, which would definitely kill the deal.

Imagine you give up Demidov + Sacha Boisvert + James Hagens for Celebrini. That's a huge L for us.

In my playbook a team needs 2 top 6C, a no.1 D and no. 3D that can both put up some points ( 2D and 4D to at least play solid D ) and a starting goalie.

Where are we with that ? I'd say we have a top 6C. Maybe Dach, but he needs to play a season. And that's it.

A whole pile of D men , several with offensive upside, but nobody taking those jobs yet except Guhle maybe as a no. 2D And no starting goalie.

I think Montembeault is making a very solid case for being a starting goalie. He's been playing phenomenal considering the team in front of him.

Ideally Hutson, Reinbacher and Guhle fill up 3 of the top 4 D spots moving forward and I'd expect there's a strong chance we draft a center with our 1st pick this year or go the trade/FA route this summer.

What about this guy?
Lawson Crouse 6'4, 26 years old, drafted 11th OA in 2015. Was pegged as a power forward that needed consistency and now he's starting to pick up his ppg more now. a bit of a late bloomer. Makes $4.5M on Arizona who could use our draft picks to help their rebuild

would love to have him but arizona has little need for more draft picks

I agree Monty is playing his best hockey and he is making a case for being a starter, but we just need to see him do that over a longer stretch.

As for the D there is promise, but it's still a wait and see.

Over the next 2 years we will really see what we have and what we need.

That’s a lot of picks! But they don’t have many shiny first rounders.

Or maybe they’d be interested in a young dman?
They have been using shiny 1st rounders the last couple years. 2 picks in 1st round last year, 3 in 2022. They have drafted 18 times in the 1st 3 rounds in the last 3 drafts and have 20 picks in top 3 rounds over the next 3 drafts. Arizona is kind of where we are needing to convert some of the prospects/picks in the system into high end talent not more picks. That said when you have no money you end up with lots of picks

Not sure if anyone listened to Aaron Ward segment on Melnick’s show the other day - talked about how Habs are rated 3rd worst for allowing Dzone entries and that driven by extremely high rate of odd man rushes by the opposition (2-on-1, 3-on-1, 3-on-2s), and how that makes Habs G performances (all 3G) even more impressive .

How Canes are tops in the league in limiting Dzone entries, based on their fwd’s supporting the back check, making the acquisition of someone like Allen very logical - I.e Canes just need a steady G not an All Star.

If HuGo can get some picks back, at least there's something salvageable, in order to acquire prospects.

If you want to trade Kovacevic for a pick, then it's best you hold on to him, perfect 7D. Do you prefer another Wideman?
We hope.

What I do doubt is a move that will move the needle short term.
i.e. in terms of this season's roster or next season's draft.

Not sure why many of you guys are expecting us to make a splash. Firstly, no legit star player is available like how Tkachuk and Eichel were. Secondly, we don't have the assets for such a player anyways. Do you think teams are going to be tripping over themselves to get Harris/Mesar/Farrel/Barron/late 1sts? We would have to trade away the likes of Hutson/Roy/Mailloux/Reinbacher to get such a player and that defeats the purpose of the rebuild. Lastly, if Suzuki and Caufield aren't happy about being bad again next year, they need to look and see how other Stanley Cup winning teams rebuilt until they got legit stars with their top picks.

If we are talking about guys like Zegras/Necas/Kakko/Laine then it's feasible, but we will still likely suck next year even if we acquire them.

Honestly, I would trade Allen for future consideration if there was no retention at all just to stop this non-sense of 3 goaltenders in MTL and also freeing the 3.80M for next season.

Zegras talk don't seem to want to go away. In last 10 minutes I seen talk about him to Montreal on Twitter, Facebook, now here.
