Trade Proposal
  • To Winnipeg: Brock Nelson ($3M cap hit, 50% retained), Kyle Palmieri ($2.5M cap hit, 50% retained)
  • To NY Islanders: Brad Lambert, Colby Barlow, 2025 first-round pick

Here's what's infuriating about being an Islander fan right now. Winnipeg could offer this to Lou and his exact reply would be, "Not interested. I'm trying to resign both those guys and prepared to let them walk for nothing if I can't."

Not a bad offer, but just needs a few minor tweaks…Remove Palmieri, remove the retention on Nelson, remove Lambert, remove Barlow, and then add a 3rd

Nelson should be a target. Palmieri is a good player, but shouldn’t be a priority until they add a defenseman first.

Chemistry is a real thing as well. Too many changes can have ill effects. There’s a fine line between safeguarding the roster from injuries and over compensating, throwing team chemistry out the window.

Why It Works
For the Jets, Nelson slots in as a 2C upgrade, potentially forming a lethal line with Vilardi and Perfetti, while Palmieri adds versatility and playoff tenacity—think a line with Ehlers and Namestnikov. Their top-nine depth becomes a nightmare for opponents, and the $5.5 million cap hit preserves flexibility. For the Islanders, Lambert and Barlow offer high-ceiling forward prospects (one near NHL-ready, one developing), and the first-rounder replenishes draft capital. It’s a haul comparable to the Bo Horvat trade (a first-rounder, Anthony Beauvillier, and Aatu Raty), adjusted for Palmieri’s inclusion and retention.
trade list, though Winnipeg’s competitiveness might appeal. If the Jets push for a cheaper deal, the Isles could swap Barlow for a lesser prospect like Rutger McGroarty, but the 50% retention justifies a premium return.
This trade would kickstart a youth movement for the Islanders while giving the Jets a legitimate shot at the Cup—two birds, one well-crafted stone.

Flame away
the standard 1st + decent prospect that the top rentals get every single year...
Same proposal but Islanders add Dobson and Barzal, Jets add Connor and Appleton

Retention at this point doesn't matter, it's the price of getting a deal done in a difficult cap environment. You're not going to upgrade a B or C level prospect to an A level prospect just because you retained for a couple of months.

True, I used AI to generate this proposal .
Not a great endorsement of AI.

I think a 1st, second and a third would probably be the equivalent of Nelson and Palmeri.

Not 3 firsts.

the Jets got Monahan & Toffoli for 1st, 2nd, 3rd.

Overpayed for Monahan, but I get your point.
We don’t need Palmieri, so would only be looking at Nelson for 1st + 3rd

So, out of the top 100 drafted NHL prospects based on Wheeler’s latest (and most comprehensive) list:
  • Rutger McGroarty: 36th
  • Brad Lambert: 39th
  • Colby Barlow: 53rd

Lambert seems like a lock for the NHL . He is middle six winger most likely. Barlow is good, less of a lock.

How many times are you in a position to win a cup?

Prospects are nice. Will the best goalie in the world still be the best when these prospects are ready to contribute?

Lou will probably get a 1st and decent prospect for Nelson. He probably gets a second for Palmeri. Both without retention.

How many teams, with top prospects, have recently won the cup?
So you don't follow hockey but think you should make proposals...
