Hey guys, what's about getting Ehlers from the Jets. When I watch him he always makes plays, really speedy and creative wing. It seems he is not a hot commodity as well.

At least I like him way more than DeBrincat and for some reason think he will be a more impactful addition.
I've been a big fan of Ehlers the player, scared of his health/availability track record. Would be happy if he were available at a reasonable cost, but not sure the Jets are looking at moving on from him.

We are not going to get all of the pieces for this re-build from the draft. No one hits on enough of their picks to do that.

Isnt the whole point of rebuilding to take as many kicks at the draft to maximize future value?

I am not convinced we are past that phase of rebuilding.

This team just finished bottom 10 and is missing several major pieces. Half of our rebuild pieces haven't even had a chance to player their rookie season yet.

Furthermore, our GM just traded our 2nd best forward and our 2nd best dmen. Both were prime aged.

You don't know what we have in the pipeline at this point as it's still all coming along. Mazur is already showing promise among others. Till we see more of them we really don't know.

No one said we were going to get all the answers at the draft, what I'm saying and others have said, until we fill the high priority spots, you don't bother with low priority. Hell, the best winger Detroit has had in a long time was Hossa, and that was a UFA signing. I don't remember the last time we traded for a meaningful winger. It's never a priority as centers can be pushed to wing but the opposite is lot less likely.

I'll spoil it, we have nothing in the pipeline. Sorry to shatter your hopes and dreams, but we have drafted nothing players under Yzerman, the same that we have drafted nothing players under Holland. The seconds and the thirds and the late round picks are all going to generally be worthless. And you can't sit around waiting for Mazur to become Marchand or for Johansson to become Lidstrom.

Filling the high priority spots means finding players for the top of the lineup with elite characteristics. Trading to add a player with 50 goal upside at the age of 25 that could be in your organization for the rest of his career is the literal definition of filling a high priority spot.

How many times does it need to be explained to you that NHL teams can make more than one acquisition a decade? :help:

When asked what kind of players you wanted on the Wings on the trade board you literally spouted a list of Hall of Fame centers from 30 years ago. I don't think you really even know what you want from them except for magically drafting Yzerman and Fedorov again.
I was listing an archetype of Centers we've had. The fact that you can't read and understand that is on you.

Two way centers, since you among others don't seem to understand what a two way player is and had to ask I used examples you most likely had heard of.

Taking an injury riddled and difficult to deal with winger and a defensively suspect 2nd pair D and turning them into a 30-40 goal winger and and a legit 1/2c, both under the age of 30 and both signed long term, would be considered mind-blowing asset management, wouldn't it? The picks are just an intermediary.

SY could use all the picks like some people want and have a pretty good shot at ending up with 0 NHL players. This is, after all, the guy who drafted Slater Koekkek in the first round.

Think about it in this context though..

Hronek+105 overall + let's just say Zadina
=
DeBrincat+43 overall

So yeah, the GM traded our second best defenseman that we could parlay directly into replacing our second best forward and adding a pick that could be used to add another defenseman into the pipeline. All while keeping an extra first in 2024.

I don't think Larkin re-upped for 8 years if the plan is just to keep drafting and being patient. I think this year and by next year at the latest is the time to be more aggressive. Most draft picks don't live up to the hype so if we can get comparable players now to what we could get via draft we need to get on it.

We have a lot of picks over these next 2 drafts (2023/2024). I would think after that we might not be looking to stockpile or hold onto as many of our picks. Around that timeframe I think we will see a lot of players we have already picked break onto the team. Hopefully we see some players already on the team take another step in their game. Not even fully convinced we keep and use both of those picks for 2024, to be honest.

If you think we still need to be picking high and stockpiling picks for the 2025 draft and beyond then we should be talking about trading Larkin and firing the GM and/or coach at that point.

Let me guess, you're one of those poor souls that thinks if a team doesn't have multiple top 3 or top 2 picks that they'll never do well.

I'm positive he knew full well what was coming. Yzerman wasn't going to mince words with him or sell him some primrose dream. I'd willingly bet that Yzerman spelled out it out in fair detail and if Larkin wasn't on board with it he would have been traded as well.

Nah, Yzerman is not planning on just drafting drafting drafting at this point. He just said a week ago he may look at using his 2nds as trade chips. That means he wants to add actual NHL players in the nearer future. Larkin has been on a non playoff team and a really bad team for 6 years now, and he isn't going to want to be have too many more seasons of finishing bottom 10.

I'm one of the people who understand what statistics tell me, which requires high picks, but I also understand that a lot of this is driven by luck.

What I also am is someone who prefers action to inaction. Because by deploying your strategy of "we have to wait until we know what we have" is ignoring what we have today. Further, it's a never ending cop out. Because when this wave fails, you will say we have to wait for the next wave, and then we wait for the next wave.

What you are petitioning for is exactly what Holland tried to sell you. We know Hank and Pav and Nik are getting old, just wait, we have the next wave coming in Nyquist and Tatar and Dekeyser, just wait, we have the next wave coming in Bertuzzi and Mantha and Larkin, just wait, we have the next wave coming in Rasmussen and Zadina and Veleno.

What's so wrong with small wingers?

Tampa had them their offence full on Cup wins. Red Wings offence is already bigger even after adding DeBrincat.

Some 5'9 guy just won Conn Smythe.

We have size and we can add size alonside DeBrincat, if needed. It's just one piece in the puzzle.

Open your eyes for reality.
No Rasmussen and Soderblom and MO and Edvinsson and Wallinder and so on and so on don't exist.

To me its about executing what Yzerman started. The plan was to spend a handful of seasons making as many picks as possible. Obviously there isn't a hard definition on that but Id suggest 5 fits that definition as well as 4. Yzerman has preached patience at every press conference. Kasper hasn't played his rookie season, neither has Edvinsson.

I think Yzerman will (and should) make 2 first round picks this year. I also think its too early to trade future 1st round picks without top 10 protection. Beyond that, I definitely support adding to the overall talent base via trade.

Well Stevie probably could have gotten Horvat for Kasper and Hronek, but didn't. (I mean Kasper > Raty, right?) That's why I don't think Stevie is going to make any big trades. I really don't see any players in the trade rumor mill that are better than Horvat.

Since we're quoting Stevie today, he's already said he expects to use both 1st rounders.
“I don’t anticipate moving the ninth pick,” Yzerman said. “In all likelihood as we stand here today, I expect to use the 17th pick as well.”

I say he signed with the assurance that moves would be made or at least thoroughly looked through.

That can only mean we tried and pushed hard for a goal scorer and maybe another top 6 player?

This is Yzerman we're talking about. "Use" could mean anything.

That doesn't rule out the picks I was more talking about 41-43 this year and possibly next years 1sts. I don't think he is trading our 1sts this year or next personally, but I do think he has at least one surprising/exciting trade in the works. Can't imagine Larkin resigned with the thought of another 9th or worse from bottom finish. Right now, we are worse on paper than we started last season, with no Hronek or Bert and no replacement thus far for either. Rookies are not replacements for them as all rookies will have their ups and downs.

Not a guarantee of any move, I just don't see Steve not adding anything decent in the goal scoring front. Teams won't be tanking quite as hard this season, and we are worse imo as of right now than we started last season. If we don't make any significant move to increase our talent, I honestly see us in the bottom 3-6 range. The bottom 5-6 teams this year tanked as hard as we have seen anyone tank in awhile and that won't be the case this year, as while next years draft still has exciting talent, there is no Bedard to chase after.

Did anyone hear the rumor from Detroit Sports Nation about a handshake deal in place to acquire DeBrincat?

Contingent on 2 things

Who’s available at pick 17
Locking up DerlBrincat to an extension

Apparently Ottawa has a particular prospect in mind. Also, Zadina is included in the package going to Ottawa.

So Zadina +17oa
For DeBrincat

Anyone else hear this? I didn’t find it in the thread maybe I missed it

no i didn't say guarantee because I doubt yzerman would be able to promise that. He is a calculated type guy. But i said he promised to make the effort, essentially.

I'd say we've got pretty good odds that Edvinsson and Kasper make more of a positive impact this coming season than Hronek and Bertuzzi did last season.

Someone not currently in the organization will be added to the top 9 forwards and someone not currently in the organization will be added to the top 4 defense. We'll also have a new backup.

We aren't entering next season as is.

Several posts about it. Hockeynews, Detroitsportsnation, Hockeywriters all saying roughly the same thing.
