Callahan plays with a higher motor and blocks a lot mor shots. There's more to evaluating talent than looking at "60 point seasons".

Is this in relation to Horton? He plays with quite a motor himself.

Callahan healthy is still not better than horton.

Oh, I know. I was just saying, if Callahan WAS healthy, there's at least the argument he plays more games then the oft-injured Horton. But they're both always injured and Horton is WAY more effective when they are healthy. So it's not even close.

Oh perfect so he can break a hand or leg again in front of a zdeno chara shot and be out for extended periods at a time.

YOU DONT PAY $6 MILLION FOR INTANGIBLES SUCH AS SHOT BLOCKING. That is the bottom ****ing line. You can find many players under $2-$3 million to do that and play the 3rd-4th lines and PK.

Shot blocking isn't an intagible, we can actually measure it.

It will be very hard to further improve this hockey team, especially at the center position, if Callahan gets that contract.

Especially considering that Miller may likely be a better version of Callahan within 2 years.

Yep. And then Miller, Kreider, and Zucc will all want their paydays after seeing what Callahan gets. It is a trickle down effect. They are only setting up for failure in so many avenues by giving him the contract he wants.

This is the dumbest discussion i have had with any poster...

YOU KNOW WHAT....lets search for free agents with the highest shot block totals this summer. And only retain homegrown players that shot block...because that leads to championships right? Thats why Callahan has a cup right? Dubinsky too? Prust? Tortorella still here right?

Fans are going to turn on him quick if he keeps playing like this. He hasn't even signed a deal and any time he blows a chance you hear people in the crowd making 6 million dollar comments.

Did I say he only blocks shots?

when you are negotiating potential 6 yr contracts at 29 and things like high motors and shot blocking are brought up, you are usually talking about a marginal player trending downward.

like ryan callahan.

just sayin

Get rid of Dorsett and you fit in Cally with his raise and Lindberg/Fast next year no problem.

If the Rangers farm system couldn't produce, it would be a major problem.

I don't think Cally is worth $6M on his production level, but I'm okay with $5.8 so another 200k isn't going to hurt, neither is 6.2... but sacrificing him for an opportunity cost should only be an option if he was being replaced plus the farm needed an upgrade like Vancouver is facing with Kesler.

The deal isn't going to hurt until Kreider asks for $5M, or the Rangers can't back-fill their bottom 6.

Hell the Rangers can fit MSL and Cally next year by not re-signing Boyle and Stralman... on top of giving Zucci his raise.

So glad that this isn't the MSG basketball department handling the cap, otherwise fan sentiment would matter much more.

For $6 million we can rebuild him if he breaks down, right?

Did I say he only blocks shots?

Might as well have....because you just said stats dont tell the whole story...so im wondering what does. The shot blocking? The hitting (which has been much less prevalent this year)? The PKing? You dont pay $6 million for those things. And those are things you have to go by because his statistics certainly dont warrant $6 million. He is at most a $5-$5.25 player. He is. Some cant see it because he is homegrown and was part of that core that got us out of the dark ages so to speak. But if this guy was a free agent to be of another team no one here would be willing to pay him $6 million...not even close.

Through 45 games this year, compared to last years 45 gp, he is producing less in every facet practically. He has battled injuries. It is sign of things to come.

I forgot, we should only look at point totals and completely overlook the aspects of Callahan's game that make him valuable to the team...

He deserves those comments. He's dilusional to be asking what he's asking for. And we have just the idiot of a GM to actually give it to him.

What he does on the ice won't nearly be worth his cap hit.

If he didn't want the vitriol, he would sign a contract that he's worth. 5x5. Max. Even that is pushing it. Girardi got what he got because on the ice he is far more valuable.

This situation is a stinker.

No, I'm just not living in a fantasy world where Callahan didn't finish every check and block everything he could get to over the past several years.

.....and got top line minutes and top power play minutes and often could not hit the net or handle the puck properly. O na good team, he is a 3rd liner and PKer, nothing more.

Well this is your problem right here. You cant grasp that no one is saying we dont appreciate what he brings. There is not a fan on these boards that does not love callahan. We all do. But you have to draw a line. Those "other aspects of his game" are replaceable and by much cheaper and likely younger players.

I said points don't tell the whole story, not stats....

Based on some of these comments all 50 pt players are created equal and Callahan finishing checks, blocking shots, and being a player that you can pair up against oppsong teams top lines is meaningless.

When you're talking about a 6 year, 36M deal for a forward you'd think we'd be focusing on the player's offensive capabilities first and foremost.

Christ...

But points do matter when you are asking for $6 million dollars!!!!!! **** sake. Callahan has had ONE 50 point season so you cant even call him a 50 point player that adds other things. He is a 40 point player with other things.

He hasn't been doing those things nearly as much and he isn't nearly as important to the team as a result. You're living in a 24 month ago dream. That Callahan, at 6M would still be overpaid, but people would be a lot less upset about it. He's already showing the signs of wear and is only that player in memory and reputation right now.
