So....because other teams make mistakes the rangers should follow suit? The Clowe and Clarkson contracts are disasters...

What other teams do dictates the market. Giiven the current cap and where it is likely to go, 6 million dollars is not nearly as much as people are making it out to be. The fact that 6 million per is described as "top line money" says it all.

He's worth around six million. Go look at Horton, Clarkson, and Clowe's contracts. That's the market.

Top line players don't ask for 6+ per, they ask for 8-10 per. That's where contracts are trending. When you reach free agency you get paid, it is what it is.

Please don't use Clarkson and Clowe as a gauge for Callahan's contract...that's what his agent has been doing

Those contracts are known by everyone to be terrible

Nathan Horton, is 28 years old and just signed off on a $5.3 AAV. Though statistics may be similar, Horton is a much more talented player, a better finisher, and has been better in the playoffs than callahan.

You will never convince me that Callahan, over the next six years, will be worth $36m to the Rangers. They need offense. Not an example-setter. Buffalo and Edmonton need an example-setter. The whole "market value" argument is not at all persuasive.

How many players have asked for 10M per?

Every year, it's the same thing. They are called "negotiations" for a reason. One party comes to the table with a high number, the other party comes to the table with a low number...they negotiate and end up somewhere in the middle.

It's like buying a used car. Of course the guy selling is going to ask for more than the car is worth...and the buyer is going to offer less than he's willing to pay.

I'm confident that between now and Wednesday, Cally will be signed for a number we can live with.

It doesnt dictate jack ****. It shows stupidity by a couple teams. The rangers dont need to be part of the stupidity. Horton is making $5.3 AAV. Callahan is not better than him.

So he'll be taking less than the rangers have already offered?

Unfortunately right now it sounds like the number in the middle is at 6 million and a lot of us can't live with that, for the next 6/7 years

It has huge mistake written all over it

Callahan has reached 50 points just once. Horton has reached 60 points twice and 50 points twice. Had he not had injuries he probably would have 4 60 point seasons and 2 50 point seasons.

Callahan asking for more is flat out ignorant anyway you slice it.

He also got seven years and I could definitely argue that Cally is better than him.

I said 8-10. Didn't the Sabres reportedly offer Vanek like 10 a year before they traded him? He also rejected the Islanders offer. Honestly, what do you think his agent asks for?

Please go find me the $10 million AAV the sabres offered. Dont just spew out bs to support your theory that a $6 million AAV is where the league is trending for 3rd line players. That is top 2 line pay and callahan is not a 2nd liner at this point. This is setting up to be drury all over again. People never learn.

You are absolutely DELUSIONAL if you think callahan is a better player than nathan horton. DELUSIONAL. We should put that one in a poll. See how well that turns out for you. Just because you think something is true doesnt mean it is. Numbers dont lie.

Yeah, it's just like with Redden. The guy was clearly deteriorating and we all saw that...yet Sather couldn't help but sign him to a 6 year 39M deal. Has this man learned nothing?

Horton is so much better then Cally. Now, if cally could stay healthy, I'd argue he has that, but neither do. So it's a wash.

How about Taylor Hall? He ate 3 nice UFA years on his contract.

How about Brown, who fired his agent and worked out a contract with LA to make sure the cap wouldn't be an issue in retaining future players.

I love Cally but he wants a payday and by all means, he can earn that, but do it elsewhere. Buffalo is calling, go take your leadership up there, it will be great for their young team.

i agree...in three years this deal may look like a peach. i am constantly amazed by salary escalation. dont see that changing soon.
i do agree with the people that say it seems a lot, but i'll defer to the (professional) bean counters on this. (i know they make mistakes, but...)

Callahan healthy is still not better than horton.

Please. Go be close to your grandmother. lol

Callahan plays with a higher motor and blocks a lot mor shots. There's more to evaluating talent than looking at "60 point seasons".

Oh perfect so he can break a hand or leg again in front of a zdeno chara shot and be out for extended periods at a time.

YOU DONT PAY $6 MILLION FOR INTANGIBLES SUCH AS SHOT BLOCKING. That is the bottom ****ing line. You can find many players under $2-$3 million to do that and play the 3rd-4th lines and PK.

Learned nothing from the Drury contract or how the penguins operate yet everyone envies them so much. They pay little to nothing to their role players because they invest their money on production on the scoreboard.

It will be very hard to further improve this hockey team, especially at the center position, if Callahan gets that contract.

Especially considering that Miller may likely be a better version of Callahan within 2 years.
