Barrie is a legit 2nd pair D who is a very good PP QB. Nashville can flip him for a 1st easily.

The prospect is Edmontons latest 1st round pick who hasn't devalued at all.

It's two firsts a 4th and whatever they get for Barrie. For miminal retention.

Rumored price for Ekholm was 2 1sts. They got more.
The thing is... We're one of the few (maybe only) teams who could pull that off without it being detrimental in the long term. It would hurt - but probably provide an overall benefit.

I don't think it will happen - but using @Der Jaeger 's example - I'd be fine giving up a lottery protected R1, our fourth or fifth best prospect who may struggle to make the team anyway & Jokiharju for the right defensive upgrade.

It's not like you're giving up these pieces for a rental. You're helping the team over the course of multiple seasons.

I'd retain 50% on Olofsson and move him to the Wild for Greenway. Seems like a decent deal, especially if Granato can more out of Greenway.

It's not like the Sabres haven't been scoring, and Olofsson hasn't really contributed in a while, so it might be a good deal.
I might do that in the off-season. I don't think I'd do that now.

Prices are absolutely insane right now.

Can’t live without Olofsson getting caved in and providing nothing at 5 on 5? If that’s been the key to their success…their pathetic D move suddenly makes perfect sense

A lot of teams will be looking to unload players this off-season, it's gonna be wild.
For other teams…sure.

That implies having something to sell of value and also that they don't have a need for the players they have to help get to the playoffs. They have very few expiring contracts and the ones they have are important per role to the team.
The only thing we could sell is cap space.

I agree with your price. However Nashville just got a better defenseman plus a top 2 prospect from Edmonton AND an unprotected 1st.

I have no interest in paying more than Edmonton did for Ekholm......and I wanted Ekholm more than Chychrun

Did Dubas just sell Toronto's 1st and then get Washington's first which is probably going to be around 13 or 14?

This isn't even fair.. Sabres should just sell at this point with these prices.

EDIT: Boston's first.. ok my bad

I agree that the take that Barrie is garbage is just posters that never watch him play (or don't pay attention to his game when they do) and just repeat the hockeysfuture clueless forum narrative. Happens with players all the time for every team. That said, without solid retention, I don't think Barrie returns a first, especially not in this draft with another year at 4.5.

He does some things really well, but he is an incomplete defenseman. If you are hoping to be a legitimate cup contender and Barrie is in your top 4, I think you have to look at upgrading him. If you are a team aspiring to make the playoffs, and Barrie is in your top 4, I think if you deploy him properly, he is adequate and will make some big plays for you.

The thing I don't get is, why waste a retention slot to only retain 4% on Ekholm? The added value has got to me minimal, but losing a retention slot for this deadline and 3 more years hurts way more than what they are gaining imo.
