Leafs fans: Thinks our defense is trash and would never be able to match up to top teams in the playoffs.

Also Leafs fans: Wants to break up one of the best shutdown lines in hockey who has matched up against other teams best and barely gives up anything.
maybe leaf fan or 2 but I don't see most wanting to break up our 3rd line

So Engvall - Kampf - Mikheyev gets roasted in the playoffs when it has not been roasted at any point this year.

Yet Knies - Kampf - Mikheyev won't get roasted.

Ok.
??? I said Knies on the hypothetical Nylander line with Engvall out of the lineup

When Knies and Abruzzese join the team, and with us pretty much guaranteed a playoff position, I'd like to try this out.

Knies-Matthews-Marner
Bunting-Tavares-Blackwell
Kerfoot-Abruzzese-Nylander
Mikheyev-Kampf-Engvall
Kase

Are you telling me you're comfortable with that line going up against a Barkov or Huberdeau line, or a Stamkos or Kucherov line?

Still waiting on you to tell me where the Leafs edge out Florida btw
Don't fret, Mrazek and his sparkling .886% and 3.48 GAA will be there to back-stop Toronto!

Yeah, Toronto is toast in the first round.

Both special teams, by a lot. Defense too, even after they added Chiarot and Hagg.

Pretty much Florida has better offensive depth (or offensive depth that is hitting on all cylinders right now) and Bobrovsky, who has his fair share of really **** play on us. That is it.

And yes, those guys have shown they can match up against those lines. Meanwhile, I guess the Matthews line is just going to have to toast their shutdown 3rd lines... which they don't even really have. Or are they going to put their top lines up against ours and hope they can win?

So who is on that 3rd line then? Kase? Blackwell? Why is Engvall coming out before Spezza/Simmonds when he is far better and more important to this lineup?

Knies/Abruzzese can have a chance while Kase is out without taking Engvall out... And I can tell you right now that nobody off of that 4th line is coming out. Spezza/Simmonds are the ones out of that lineup before anyone in the top 9 or Kerfoot.

Stretch run here will be the time to figure all that out with matchups vs both the Florida teams coming. Line works it’s as off and grinds like mad. They are annoying, and spend overwhelming majority of their time in the other teams end despite heavy defensive starts. I’m not saying it will work, but I’m I don’t really see why you’re automatically convinced it’ll fail. Sure, on paper, they aren’t close to the individual players on those opposition lines, buts kinda how shutdown 3rd lines have always worked.

I'm fine with not getting another forward if they think Knies can grab a spot in the lineup.

I'm still not comfortable with the goalie situation. It's either Jack or bust and that's incredibly frightening for a guy hurt right now and has played as bad as he has for months. Maybe if they had actually kept Sateri he would've been another option, but now that's gone too. That's the deadline disappointment for me.

Deepest team we've had in a very long time. Not just the Matthews era.

But we don't have a competent goalie right now that give us anything more than sub .900 hockey.
At least Campbell has shown he's capable in the past. We just have to hope he can regain his form and get hot at the right time.

Theoretically we have the bodies we could simply push the 3rd line down for the 4th, and build 3 scoring lines.

Bunting Matthews Marner, obvious line 1

Then you have Knies, Robertson, Tavares, Nylander, Kerfoot, Spezza, Blackwell etc to build out middle 6

How I'd go next game (assuming Kase plays, and Gio/Blackwell lineup)

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Kase-Tavares-Nylander
Engvall-Kampf-Mikheyev
Robertson-Kerfoot-Blackwell

If Kase is out, give Blackwell a shot on L2 and put Spezza in his spot.

Defense:
Rielly-Liljegren
Brodie-Holl
Giordano-Lyubushkin

All signs pointing to goaltending shitting the bed. Wasted season.

Shoulda gotten fleury for free in the off season, or paid the price for him at TDL

My read on that is there’s probably something to take away from that if Dubas and company feel comfortable enough to make no goalie additions knowing that. Tells me they aren’t worried about Campbell’s health at all

If Muzzin comes back at even 90% of what he was last year we have 3 first pairings.
If Campbell comes back at even 90% of what he was for calendar 2021 we have a solid starter.
If the big 4 are rolling we have a nigh on unstoppable top 6.

I'm more than fine betting on those If's rather than spending to bring in others.

I think they go same lines as Nashville with Gio in for Sandin, Liljegren in for Dermott, Blackwell in for Kase (aka 2nd line), and probably Robertson in for Clifford.

Maybe the defense pairs get shifted around a bit.

We’re ahead of and better than Boston, with games in hand.
One game in hand. 2 point lead. We play them Mar. 29th, two days after Florida. It may be us in 4th place in the division after that one.

Better than Boston? Boston is coming together at the right time. We're headed in the opposite direction. If you had to choose to be playing like Boston is right now or Toronto, anyone is picking the way Boston is, especially in goal. Who has been better may not matter much very soon.

Not that I agree with your analysis.....but ....So because maybe another team might have shitty goaltending as well it makes it ok that we do?
On playoff you need your goalie being hot at the right time

Stl won because binnington was hot at the right time, now they try to trade him away

Washington holtby was hot at the right time and now hes fighting for a back up role

Matt murray was hot at the right time with pittsburgh or fleury ( against washington)

Niemi, Quick, Ward, osgood, khabibulin, giguere just goalie getting hot at the right time
