Batherson for McCann
It's a pretty reasonable thought, in terms of making a hockey trade to shake things up.

But is McCann going to waive his trade protection to come to Ottawa? I'm doubtful. Seattle has the appeal of being a no-state-tax market and that is a strong lure. We can't even offer him the carrot of coming to play on a Cup contender.

I suspect this is a problem the Senators are going to run into a lot when trying to change up the mix.

What about Batherson for Rackell?

He only has an 8 team no-trade list. Similar cap hit. He has term. He is also a right handed forward, which is important since Batherson is one of our only righties.

I don't know the dynamics of why NHL players choose to train together, but if there is a connection between Batherson and Crosby beyond it being convenient for them to work together, maybe bringing in Batherson would be seen as a positive.

Rakell is really good defensively too. I'd consider a Bath-Rackell swap.

I'd do it, I don't know if Pitt would. I think Dubas has abandoned that charade of thinking they can "win" while Crosby is still there. They're probably looking for players younger than Batherson.

To Nashville: Drake Batherson
To Ottawa: Oliver Bjorkstrand + Colton Sissons
To Seattle: 2026 1st (from NAS via VGK) + Anton Forsberg

Ottawa gets a player who can replace much of Batherson's production and a warm body for the bottom 6 (who can skate and kill penalties).

Nashville gets a young-ish playmaking winger they can pair with either Stamkos or Forsberg, and give up the latest of their 3 upcoming 1st rounders (so it's not like they're selling the farm).

Seattle gets a nice pick and cap space.

Forsberg is included for cap reasons.

Giroux has a NMC and could pick his spot, and with that, you're not getting much if any value back.
Considering his family situation, it'd probably be east coast or nothing: so FLA or TB.

You'd get maybe a 4th round pick, so what's the point.
The only way we could benefit really is some kind of 3 way trade, send him to Florida or Tampa, and we get someone back from somewhere else with the ~6 million we now have.

Won’t happen though.

Panic button has been pushed! Can't see Staios and Poulin standing pat at the deadline.
A few surprises in store perhaps?? They have had ample time to assess their roster.

I don't think Staios does anything significant. This team needs major changes to the core. I don't think small tweaks are going to fix it. My guess is they let this group have a crack at playoffs and if they cannot get it done, Staios reshapes things in the off season.

if a team offers something for forsberg take it

we have a few extra fourth liners so if someone wants one take what you can get

use one of our three 3rd round picks and something to try and add a middle 6 winger

I don't think they should be buyers, they don't have the cap space to do so anyways, but they also don't have much of anything to sell unless Giroux is moving on, which I doubt. I expect a small move or two either depth in or out, but nothing major. Could see Forsberg flipped out of here if there's a taker. Don't think the team has performed well enough overall to be getting some addition at the expense of the future, just have to let the chips fall imo and pick up the pieces in the summer.

Based on what I've seen of Batherson, the only value he brings to a workout with Crosby is to wear an orange toque and call himself a pylon.

He could, but I'll be surprised if he does go. Most likely, he's back imo. Sounds pretty settled in Ottawa and he likely doesn't want to live out of a hotel, away from his family for months.
I think a cup would cement his legacy, and so wouldn't be surprised if he went back to Florida. I'm sure the family would be okay visiting regularly.

I don't think the return would be worth the message it'd send to the fanbase. What is Florida going to give you? A 4th round pick this year? A 3rd round pick in 2027?

I don't think Staios or Andlauer want to be sellers. They may trade off small pieces if there are takers (JBD, Forsberg, Hamonic), but shipping out Giroux is a "we've given up on the playoffs" move.

They're most likely to stand pat and tell the team that they need to get there with what they have.

It'd be one thing if Giroux could fetch a 1st rounder or good prospect. But that wouldn't be the case.

I highly doubt Staios burst into the office and said "Listen, Vancouver has finally agreed to put Soucy in the deal, fill those racks with Norris jerseys...NOW."

My assumption is that the store manager or marketing team is evaluated based on their performance, and they probably assume Norris is gone so it's a good time to market his jersey more heavily than the others. Because if he is traded say a week from now, they won't be able to get rid of Norris Adidas jerseys at any reasonable price.

I just thought it was incredibly strange to only have one player on that rack, and have it be Norris of all people.

Another thing is that I know a bit about Adidas jersey distribution - how it works is that a handful of popular players are picked out to be pre-made by the good people of Indonesia, because they can sell player jerseys for almost the same price as blank jerseys doing it that way. But they only do the most popular players because they mass produce them. Norris was not one of the players who they made those jerseys of. That means that any Norris jerseys available in the team store to buy off the rack are made using NHLPA certified player kits. Meaning, kits that are glued on with a heat press that some teenage boy can be trained to make in 30 seconds.

I do not know what the Sens stores processes are, but if I were to run with my theory and guess why two massive racks of Norris jerseys randomly appeared, maybe they wanted to get rid of all their Norris kits on hand. These kits cost about $50 wholesale from Stahls and would basically be garbage once he is traded. So if they have crates of blank Adidas jerseys and a few dozen kits left, and they either know or have an indication that we are going to win the Carson Soucy lottery, it would make sense to throw them on the blank jerseys now and pray to Melnyk that people grab them from the high traffic area they put them in.

Ian Mendes posts here right? Can he just let us know if my theory is true. We won't tell anyone. This is a message board in 2025. Nobody reads this stuff outside of a dozen of us.

edit: Just to clarify, I love weird fun Senators conspiracies like this. I found it incredibly compelling how strange of a choice it was to have two full racks of Norris jerseys in the most prime real estate for their store. I didn't actually ask the Gabriels cashier for scoops. I know the Joe ***** podcast is a favourite of most here, so my conspiracy theories should be at home.
Get the Adidas jersey with the fight strap, while you can, they’re nicer.

No major moves.. if they can swing a couple deals to improve the bottom 6 with out giving up too much. I want to keep our 1sts, 2nds and our top roster players even if they are not producing as expected now.

The competition with teams with more cap space and more attractive prospects will keep us out of adding medium to big fish.

The key is to improve .

My personal opinion is we blew our load and the injuries to critical players sunk us in a tight race at the wrong time. Hope I am wrong on that

I like the Adidas better because of the shoulder dimples, but they are actually the exact same jersey made by the exact same factory. The main panels are slightly different material, but to the average person are the same.

I'm just making the point that they tend to use the two racks to put stuff that I assume they want people to be more likely to buy. They almost always have Adidas jerseys on them, but they will sometimes have stuff that is relevant to that night (Pizza Line t-shirts, Military themed jerseys, etc).

Loading them up with Norris Adidas jerseys a few days before the TDL doesn't seem to be a coincidence to me.

Who knows. With M. Tkachuk out long-term(?), Giroux would be a good fit to help out their 2nd line. Not saying it's likely, but possible. And maybe given the circumstances the return is healthy enough to consider.

Unlikely though, for sure.

Trade both next year's first round draft picks for top talent.

And when the other team or the league asks us if we have both draft picks pull a dorion and say yes we do. Then middle finger the league's mom.
