It appears as though the Twitter link isn't working.

This will work for you --> NorthStar

He had a pretty bad season last year, he repeats that again and it's gonna be hard to move him.

One thing that helps is he had a good playoff and a good history so you can still likely move him.

Next year he is owed 2 million dollars. Not hard to move.

Mcdonagh has a bad playoff and is owed like 25
Million

It depends on what you think you're getting moving forward. I believe Muzzin is in decline and becoming more injury prone. I'd rather get Sandin going too since he figures to have longer to play in the league vs Muzzin who may be out of the league in 2-3 years entirely.

Some people think the injury was a blip on the radar.

Muzzin... he's more injury prone as he ages, but if he can stay healthy this year, he's just as good as he's ever been. I appreciate your thoughts on getting Sandin in, but you remove Muzzin, add Sandin, and we end up with a soft as butter D core. Even with Muzzin, it really isn't physical enough. Honestly though, I'm not quite sure how we address that right now.

It's difficult. I thought if Holl went that Manson would be a nice addition at like 5M for 2-3 years but I don't think he has interest in Canada.

I still think Dubas and co. need to be a bit more flexible on the draft strategy.

I wouldn't say Tampa has a particularly physical D core...same with Colorado until they added Manson. MacDermid didn't play a single game for Colorado. Cernak is about as rough as it gets for Tampa...Sergachev isn't soft but isn't intimidating either, Matthews took 1-2 runs at him.

I think Johan Larsson would be a great 3c option for the leafs. His defensive capabilities are comparable to kampf but he has much better offense in his game.

Bogosian is physical, Cernak certainly is... and while not the intimidating, physical, Sergachev certainly uses his body to rub players out, and Hedman is just a big man who uses that size well.

Meanwhile, Toronto's D hit leader last year was Holl, and our guys aren't that big.

Yes, you are right about Colorado though. Manson did his job for Colorado, but I didn't really find him to be intimidating physically either.

Here is the bottom line, if Muzzin goes, we absolutely have to bring in someone who can fill that role, and probably our #7 guy needs to be physical.

I agree on all of this...Zadorov would be an absolute menace to bring in...but not cheap. I did like adding Kulak just because he can play LD/RD and think he's basically another Brodie. He really made Romanov look good but not gonna add any physicality really.

Our challenge of course, is the number of Left handed D we already have. Gudbranson would be cheaper, and right handed. He didn't have a bad year last year. Not a great skater though, which could make for a challenge as a Sandin partner.

I think a compounding issue is the leafs defense also isn't fast in addition to not being physical. With how aggressive the defense pinches in Keefe's system i think we need a little more speed back there.

He's 33 plays a heavier game so he isn't like Rielly avoiding contact.
He's earned his wear and tear.

Maple Leafs off-season rumblings & outlook

Interesting Chris Johnston article.

Great insider article. Quick summary:

-Curtis Sanford is going to be hired by the Leafs for the new goaltender coach position. He was poached from the Canucks. It's not sure if he's part of multiple hires for their revamped goaltending department but he's expected to be one. Jon Elkin is also staying.

-Mentions Mrazek and Holl as the pieces trades to gain cap space. (duh)

-Still a remote chance Leafs and Campbell settle on a new contract. It will depend on what he can get on the market. Same for Blackwell and Lyubushkin but they are more likely to return.

-Leafs want to keep Kase and Engvall but would rather avoid arbitration. Talks are ongoing before July 11th. If contract talk fail, they have a tough call on qualifying either player.

-Sandin doesn't have arbitration rights but has an uncertain future with the team. His play time was blocked by veterans, and reportedly doesn't want to sign a team friendly contract like Liljegren did. So things are complicated there. (He's also subject to an offer sheet)

-Goaltending is the #1 priority but the Leafs will also concentrate on forward depth. Likely a revamped bottom 6 with departures to Mikheyev, Spezza, and maybe Blackwell, and uncertainty with Kase and Engvall.

-Husso, Kuemper and Fleury should be targets if Campbell talks fail. He mentions Husso might come in cheaper than Campbell and Kuemper.

-Cheap under-the-radar forwards will be targetted. Zach Aston-Reece, Johan Larsson and Nic Deslauriers noted names.

-Promotions will probably be a big part of the new lineup next season. A good amount of spots up for grabs.

Thank you

This stuff is hilarious.

The Leafs are constantly ruthless and let their depth players go instead of overpaying. They get mocked for "own rentals" and "losing assets for nothing".

Meanwhile now Tampa gets praised for being forced to literally give away their 2nd best dman for nothing.

Crazy town.
What’s hilarious is claiming the leafs are ruthless by letting replaceable depth players go. That isn’t moving the needle.

McDonagh is on the decline, TB see it and are acting now before having to add a premium to move the contract.

Things like this irritate me. Liljegren signed a fair deal. Sandin hasn’t earned anything more than the same

I think they would have kept him except for the salary cap, the trades gets them closer to compliance.

I don't think they are done moving players yet though.
We'll probably see another good player moved out.

Did Sandin say that, or is that speculation by the author, who probably picked it up second hand as well.

I can’t say personally, I haven’t read the originating article. I can understand Sandin having questions about where he fits as a left side D with Rielly, Muzzin and Gio all ahead of him, but I really hope the second part I bolded is not indicative of where his head is at because he’s proven relatively little as an NHLer

Employees ask their bosses all the time about opportunities.
If the Leafs don't see a future for him, or any real opportunity for ice time, then he probably wants to go where there is.

I think that would be fair.

Would prefer to see him getting ice time in Toronto, but if they don't have confidence in him he should be allowed to move on.

I still think it's funny last year a lot of us were pumped about McCann for a top 6-9 spot to give us some extra offense and cheesed when we lost him in expansion and we were told "Where are you gonna find another Holl at 2M?" - commonly believed by all insiders he's being shopped and no one is saying he's a top 4 D anymore.

wonder if Leafs could pull off something around Nylander for Tkachuk
Nylander, Holl, and Prospect for Tkachuk and Vladar

Get rid of: Kerfoot, Holl, Mrazek
Trade Campbell's rights for Blackwood
Re-sign Engvall to 2 mil, Kase to 2 mil, Sandin to 1.25 mil, Lyubushkin 1.5 mil
Sign ZAR to 1.5 mil, Larsson to 1.5 mil, Vatrano to 2.75 mil, Holtby 2 mil

Roll with 11 F/7D. Insert Anderson into the lineup if a d-man is injured

Vatrano Matthews Nylander
Bunting Tavares Marner
Engvall Kampf Kase
ZAR Larsson

Anderson
Simmonds

(Robertson called up when Kase inevitably gets injured)

Rielly Brodie
Giordano Liljegren
Muzzin Lyubushkin
Sandin

Blackwood
Holtby

That team has 50k in cap space. If Blackwood provides above average goaltending and Vatrano works out, that's a cup winning team.

Doubt Calgary would have any interest in that. Can you see Nylander playing for Sutter? 😂
