If we could somehow take Murray @100% but get back Batherson would people make that deal?

Around 11ishM in, send Kerfoot+ holl put its 5.5M net add.

We'd run Myrray + Woll at G but would get batherson and his crazy good deal.

They won't trade Murray at 100% obviously and batherson is too good to be dumped alongside a cap dump but it's a deal which gives us a complete top 6 for next year
No chance.

So the sweetners at 25% retained are looking to be:

1 of the below:

Zub
Brown
Pinto
Formenton
2023 2nd + a 4th/5th

At 50% retained the value drops for the sweetener we back in return
I think Murray + Formenton + 50% retained for Sandin

Campbell is a risk, so we pivot to another risk that (IMO) has a bigger chance to fail in Murray? Is it really just about the the term then - 2 years left on Murray vs. 5-8 on a new Campbell deal?

They can't even buy him out. They don't have any leverage at all. They either trade him or keep him.
If simply keeping him is a palatable option then that gives them leverage in a potential trade.

Obvious why they want to move him, but not sure why they are so keen on looking desperate.

This Ottawa fan summed up why I'd be pretty happy with Murray.

Of the 59 goalies that faced at least 800 unblocked shot attempts:

GSAx - 20th (between Stolarz & Varly)
GSAA - 30th (between Kahkonen & Fleury)
dFSv - 16th (between Saros & Stolarz)

Essentially the guy proved to be a #1 starter last season, and without being injured might have been a top-half one if he continued the season the way he did. Not to mention the guy got shelled the last two games of his season which crushed his stats.

I'm worried about health, and whether he can actually be healthy enough the next two years to play a significant amount of games, but it appears like he figured out something last year which got him back on track to his good years in Pittsburgh.

Would be surprised if the deal for Murray is anything other than 50% retained or 25% + a 3rd team retains an amount that brings in Murray's AAV at 3M.

Then they grab another goalie (Comrie?) in UFA, and run a tandem. If neither works, they grab someone at the deadline. The leafs spent the majority of last season getting brutal goaltending (everything after November) - and wound up with 115 points. I prefer shorter term, younger options than blowing the bank on AAV and term on one guy (Campbell, Kuemper) - particularly when those two haven't shown the ability to stay healthy either.

Saving every penny is important. They would have to keep him because they can't buy out someone on IR.

The issue is a team with Stanley Cup aspirations putting it's trust in a guy with massive injury history backed up by a rookie.

If it wasn't for Murrays NTC, he would have been traded to Buffalo for the 7th in exchange for the 16th pick (25% retention). Murray apparently will only really accept a deal to Toronto or Edmonton, with Toronto the only team with interest.

Seems like they are pretty set on dumping his contract. He's owed 15M over the next 2 seasons. The relationship appears completely over too with him being waived and what not. Ottawa is a team that values real dollars over the cap hit a lot.

Imo good with going this route, but the second goalie in the tandem has to be more established than Comrie imo.

Ottawa is saving $5 million over the next 2 seasons by trading with full retention. So the Leafs are negotiating the return for saving the Sens $5 million in actual money.

The issue is a team with Stanley Cup aspirations putting it's trust in a guy with massive injury history backed up by a rookie.
Why are people convinced that if Murray is acquired, that he's meant to be the sole solution in net?

I would trade Kerfoot elsewhere for picks.

Otherwise we tank his value by sending it for Murray and his negative asset value.
Again, I’m not 100% sure on the value, but Murray @75% was worth 9 draft slots.
There’s a break even point for the Sens too.

Can almost guarantee that Ottawa isn't on Kerfoot's list of acceptable trade destinations.

a) because Ottawa is always on players' NTC lists
b) because he's not moving to a situation where he'd end up with 3rd, or maybe even 4th line, minutes in a contract year. Ottawa has no room for him at W or C.
Fair points, maybe with a third team involved?

True. They would have budgeted him in when signing the contract so I see it more about wanting to use those dollars to be more competitive. Perhaps there is a revenue projection component to consider but strictly from a team building perspective holding on to him doesn't seam like the end of the world.

Moving him makes sense, just don't get the transparent desperation.

Definitely. Having said that, the Leafs would be saving the Sens $5 million in actual dollars even with full retention by the Sens.

So there's a ton of room to negotiate on that cost savings for the Sens.

I don't even know what the price would be. Do the Leafs pay a premium for Ottawa/3rd team to retain or is it cheaper because Ottawa saves hard cash and the NTC is limiting the options.

Don't remember what reporter but they said Devils are going into the season with Vanacek and Blackwood as their goalies

If we are going tandem and looks like we are, Reimer is as good as they come.
Reimer wont come back here. The stupid fans insulted his wife and practically ran him out if town

Cant see him or his family ever coming back
