I think Dubas locks him up on a 2 year deal. Maybe even 3 years.

It's remarkable the difference a steady defenseman makes to the other players around him. We've seen it with Muzzin over the course of his career with the Leafs and we've seen it with Giordano in the couple games he's been here.
Ya I hope so too. Hopefully he Really wants to be here so the AAV is low or else he will be a hard add to make. Also worry that having Brodie, Muzzin, Gio and Rielly will block Lily and Sandin ability to get top 4 soon and continue their development. Good problems to have i guess

I don't think so. Brodie and Muzzin have been worse players than both Sandin and Lilly this season (Muzzin for sure has been). The organization would be very dumb to keep them out of the top 4 because they're young if they've earned it.

I think we will need to see if Giordano resigns before you can really think of changing the defense up

If Giordano stays on a hometown deal, we’re indecent shape. I’d actually unload Muzzin in that case. Liljegren looks ready to day too-4 role. Sandin needs some work, but he can play 3rd pair and develop.

Rielly-Brodie
Giordano-Liljegren
Sandin-Lyubushkin

3 years is too much term for a guy his age imo. I would be perfectly happy with 2.

Definitely agree that 3 years is too much, but just thinking about the tendencies for Dubas. He locked up Simmonds for 2 years and just re-signed Clifford for 2 years. I would think that in most cases, fans would have thought they could have done 1 year deals for both of those guys because they're at the end of their careers and really, they didn't have much leverage. Maybe it was to keep the AAV down? I think that's what he does with Giordano. Gio seems like he wants to be here and tacking a 3rd year on is overkill, but within the realm of what Dubas does. And if it helps keep the AAV down, then maybe you can look at buying him out in the 3rd year. (Although because it's a 35+year old, his contract is fully guaranteed) I'm not sure how that would work for cap purposes.

I think it’s to stop the waiver wire.
Teams won’t pick guys up with 2 years left generally.

3 years on a 35+ contract is asking for trouble

I’d rather do 1 year contracts 3 times and pay a bit more, than get caught in a 3 year guaranteed contract that we need to trade assets to dump because there’s no other way to get it off our roster… cough* Marleau *cough

Just to mention, the 35+ rule isn't a thing anymore, at least not in the same way it was. As long as there are no bonuses or front loading a 35+ contract retiring comes completely off your cap.

So while there's no reason to sign Gio to 3 year deal, so long as you don't do something dumb there's no reason it should be an issue either.

Retiring, sometimes players don’t retire when you need them too

Gio is sick but I have to agree with a 1 year offer max. By all accounts he'll accept it and won't be seeking the highest offer.

We've learned this lesson with Marleau. Simmonds at 2 years was an odd choice when we have so many younger players, and Spezza is a gem but it's coming to bite us because our 4th line is not good

I'd ideally prefer to avoid term on any new Giordano contract as well. Not sure what level of pay cut he'd be willing to take for that though? His fit in a healthy Leaf lineup would be a variable of interest too.

Brodie/Muzzin generally receives much higher QoC than Sandin/Lily so its a hard comparison to make although i agreed they have looked better.

I think Muzzin is impossible to unload given he has a NTC this year and next. I think the management also want to see how he plays after his injury before possibly unloading him.

There lies the issue in my mind with resigning Gio, trying to get Lily/Sandin some top 4 time they deserve

Brodie at LD has not been great. Brodie at RD with Rielly is still an excellent pairing (most of the time).

I think his niche is being the insulator for a high end puck moving defenseman. It is a hard role to fill and he fills it extremely well. I hope that is where he ends up now with Lyubushkin hurt.

Would honestly be a fun poll. Who's the best insulator in recent memory? Picking from a list of really good, but never elite, defensemen whose job was to insulate an elite (maybe slightly overly offensive) partner. Guys like Hainsey (Reilly), Methot (Karlsson) which might be my pick, or someone else like Brodie (with Reilly or Gio previous).

Devon Toews with Colorado. He is so good that he is practically a top pairing defenseman in his own right.

Toews away from Makar is probably not a top pairing defenseman though.

For Giordano, we should just do a one year deal with performance bonuses, like Boston used to do with Chara. Play X amount of games, make playoffs, win cup etc.

I believe earned bonuses are stacked onto the following season's cap bill. Not a great idea, IMO.

If indications are correct Gio wants to be here snd only here there’s no reason for that number to be any higher than the max amount you can bury in the minors. It’s the Spezza/simmonds deal but with a bit extra juice cuz he’s a D man and still effective higher up the line up. If you re up boosh for a modest raise (Hakanpaa type deal) and Gio gets $1-1.2m then moving off Muzz and Holl creates upwards of $5m in cap to get a real goalie or another top 6F
Muzz holl Kerfoot mrazek = just under $15m to shuffle around. Replace muzz holl with boosh Gio, an ELC or blackwell for Kerfoot leaves a nice chunk of flexibility in the middle class of the line up.

Sandin doesn't deserve top-4 minutes. Liljegren does.

Reilly
Brodie
Liljegren 2 year 3 million
Sandin 2 year 3 million
Boosh 2 year 4 million
Giordano 1 year 2.5

That's your top 6
Muzzin and Holl out
