Was it always assumed that the cap would go to 82.5? Or is this a bit of a relief for the team?

It's been known for awhile but never really official.

2024-2025 should see a big increase in the cap, but until then, it will be ~1M increase each season while they recover from the pandemic shenanigans.

A lot of posters on this board want to give the Leafs a lot of credit, despite the team not having any real success.

There is a segment of fans on this board that will basically shit on the team unless they win a cup.

My stance at this point is I have seen the group have nice regular seasons, I just want to see some playoff success. Give me a series win, just one and I will happily pump the team's tires.

100%. Some playoff success is all that matters. That's one of the reasons that the extreme regular season takes, over one game, or a couple are so ridiculous.

On paper, I think this is the best Leafs team I've seen overall... for a very long time.. with maybe the exception of the goaltending question mark. But, that doesn't matter much, unless they win a round, or two...

Is that a new projection? They were taking like it would be 6 years at the start.

Value wise both those moves are close to fair value.

In the first one, I don't think Minnesota would do it though.

In the second one, Gibson's stock is way down so the price should be low but getting a #1 goalie with retention and dumping Mrazek is a huge win.

That projection was like 1-2 years ago around the start of the pandemic. So seems to lineup that in 4-5 years the big jump will happen after debts/issues are resolved. I said 2024-2025, but could be the following season.

Lavoie kinda mentioned earlier in a tweet

Thanks. So there is a Cap increase coming the year after Matty can get his contract?

Perfect timing. Ugh. I wonder if that means he will take a 1 year deal?

I’m assuming they won’t put the cap up from like 85 million to 100 million? That would be crazy. I don’t know. Would they drop escrow in the last 2 years to even it out?

Does anyone know?

It'll be 1M increase each year, unless things go really bad. It's hard to tell but there was an early projection that said the cap could jump to ~95M in 2025.

You would think they would try do it like 3 mill at a time. That’s completely unfair to the players that signed in the pandemic.

The nhl has no idea what it is doing.

82.5
85.5
88.5
91.5
95
Makes much more sense

The players owed about 1 billion in escrow going into 2021-22. The NHL says HRR will be about 5 billion this year, at 17.2% escrow that means 430 million is paid back. Next year escrow is 10% and 6% after that. If we assume HRR goes up 100 million per year we're looking at 255 million paid back in 2022-23, 156 million paid back in 2023-24 and 159 million paid back in 2024-25, for a total of 1 billion dollars.

This doesn't account for additional escrow accrued each year though, as HRR doesn't quite cover the salaries. So they'll probably have another 100-150 million owed. I'd probably say 2025-26 is the first decent cap jump. That could work out well for us though if we re-up our core just before the jump.

Which defenseman can be stolen this off-season?

In hindsight, that Ryan Ellis trade would look a lot worse for Nashville if Ellis had played more than 4 games.

We nearly got Weegar for Johnsson and Dermott but pulled out for some reason.

Kings might be a target - too many RD with Doughty, Roy, Walker, Durzi and Clarke is on the way.

Not sure why the Leafs would need to do that.

We have a solid D.

Florida turned down the Weegar deal.

We're fine on D. Even if Gio and Lyubushkin leave you still have 6 NHL defensemen under contract for next season (with Liljegren and Sandin extensions) plus Kral likely pushing and Niemela coming over.

You can *always* improve.

Unless the Leafs win a cup, I entertain any deal that I feel improves the team.

No thanks to either of these. Gibson has been a below average goalie for 3 seasons now and certainly not good enough to command a 20 year old ppg+ AHL player a good RHD and a 1st.

Honestly I think we’re pretty good on the right side. Obviously if we can improve, we do so but I’m not really in any rush to make moves.

Hopefully we re-sign Lyubushkin. We see what his physicality can bring to the table and how it can rub off on other players. I don’t think he’ll cost more than 1.5 million on a 3 year deal.

Brodie is Brodie and the way Liljegren has been playing he can easily be a top four defenceman, not to mention he’s still developing.

Ideally Giordano takes a similar home town retirement discount like Spezza has done these past few years. Maybe 1 year at 1 million.

I’d personally move Sandin for Spencer Knight straight up. Love Sandin but goaltending needs to be addressed this off-season and with Knight we have our starter for now and the foreseeable future. Hopefully we can also re-sign Campbell on a 2 year deal around 3.5. I don’t think he’s going to get 5+ like people around here talk and run with a Knight - Campbell tandem.

That leaves Muzzin which all depends on how he performs when he comes back. If he’s clearly lost a step, maybe we can ship him back to LA for a draft pick and go after someone like Provorov.

Rielly (7.5) - Brodie (5)
Provorov (6.75) - Lyubushkin (1.5)
Giordano (1) - Liljegren (1.75)

Knight (2.8) - Campbell (3.5)

I think we will need to see if Giordano resigns before you can really think of changing the defense up

I think Dubas locks him up on a 2 year deal. Maybe even 3 years.

It's remarkable the difference a steady defenseman makes to the other players around him. We've seen it with Muzzin over the course of his career with the Leafs and we've seen it with Giordano in the couple games he's been here.

3 years is too much term for a guy his age imo. I would be perfectly happy with 2.
