Friedman has said multiple times his fit for the Leafs is Chara. For one, not sure if he'd come here as he always had a hatred for the Leafs (I have no inside info on this just a feeling). But would he be so bad as a bottom pair pk clear-the-crease type? Probably wouldn't cost alot.
All the things you love about Chara would be multiple suspensions here...

I agree with you that basing anything off of a few starts is crazy. But we still also have a pretty darned good goalie in Campbell who had some struggles but may have been injured. Do we give up assets and bring in a 4th goalie when we have Jack, Mraz and Kally? Do they bring in another number 1 and basically tell the other 3 "we have zero faith in any of you so we're replacing you"? I'm not sure. Be interesting to see their thinking on that.
Right now. I don't think Mrazek and Kallgren should factor into the playoff discussion. Campbell did look like a stud for a long time and it probably is true that some of his bad play was due to his injury. If the Leafs don't get Fleury/Varlamov. Anyone that is brought in is going to have to compete with Jack for ice. Ideally, Jack wins out, because I think his upside is the highest, higher than anyone brought in. But, bringing in another option that can save pucks and that can actually challenge for ice time should be a priority. If Campbell can't return to form or re-injures himself they will need that option because the other two aren't the answer.

If we lose out in the past with good goaltending what difference does it make. This team can't fight through tough defensive teams with good goaltending. Its always been our weakness, our goaltending had been good enough to win, it's been the ability to score on the Habs and Price, Columbus, Washington, Boston...he list is long..big defensive teams beat us.
I mean...I just don't get your logic at face value I guess? You openly say that goaltending is the issue and that we shouldn't address that issue and when that issue costs us the season...blow up the core of the team? Sounds like you just want someone from the core traded to be honest. Our goaltending was good enough to win against Montreal and Columbus, though still the 2nd best goalie in both series. Our goaltending absolutely wasn't good enough against Boston though. We haven't lost all 4 series for the exact same reasons no matter how much people want to shout about grit and toughness.

I’m not really on board with trading for a goaltender who’s more so a backup or even a third string goalie. What a confidence kill that would be for Kallgren who’s stepped in and given us some quality goaltending and showing he can at least be a backup goalie in the NHL. If we’re trading for a starter like Fleury, Varlamov or Gibson, then yeah I’m on board with that.

After last year I think a lot of people want a change and if using one of the top 4 accelerates the process to where you can still take advantage of Matthews and Tavares (age-contract mans you are not trading him) you do it. It will be hard trading one of Marner or Nylander, but if you can get a prime #1 shutdown defensemen and a Goalie you do it.

As nice as Kallgren is looked, it would be foolish at this point to not chalk it up to being a pleasant flash in the pan that we got at the right time. Kallgren has looked solid but if I were to judge based off of the many games I watched him with the Marlies, he's really not THAT good and not someone we should be hanging our hat on.

It's the perfect timing for him to come in and play like this as this is eactly what we needed but I wouldn't be hoping that he'll be able to do this long term.

I imagine if Campbell really did have the rib injury, when he comes back healthy he will look closer to his normal self than what we saw over the last 6 weeks.

and how often do hockey trades like that ever happen? We aren't trading Marner so it is essentially down to Nylander. It would come down to shuffling deck chairs. I get that people are reactionary and it has sucked not finding any playoff success but the reality is we are much more likely to get worse then we are get better after trading any of them....and will likely be looking for a replacement for them the second we do trade one. That is just reality.

Joe Woll also came up this year and went on a pretty good tear with the Leafs early this season. Neither of them are that successful in the AHL yet. They are both a work in progress.

Is anybody else reluctant to want Dubas to invest in rentals based on what our goaltending looks like right now? I am thinking they should run with what we have and if they mess up, it’s time to break up the big 4 and retool.

At most I would get cheap depth guys who will only go in if there is an injury. Maybe give a Knies or Steeves a look down the stretch here.

We have some decent depth on D once Muzzin comes back. 2 of Holl, Sandin, Liljegren and Dermott will be sitting each night.

Again Goaltending is the biggest concern.

Unless the rental comes at the cost something like a 3rd. round pick or Dermott (probably gone anyway) why would you mortgage the future for this team this year?

Pay full price for a player with term/rfa.

I wonder if DeMelo could be someone they sell? I know the Leafs have had interest in the past, and he's signed for a couple more years.

I think the Leafs would offer a good chunk of picks/prospects if they could swing for DeMelo and maybe Copp as well. Seems too ambitious cap space wise though.

Copp took a head shot the other night and left the game.
I think he was subsequently missed the game against VGK, maybe as precaution?
Is this asking for another risky can't make it to the playoffs acquisition, like last year?

I kind of hope the Leafs do nothing this trade deadline.

The prices are too high and this team needs more than what can be accomplished at the deadline.

Trading a top prospect or picks for a depth player isn’t going to move the needle for this team.

To be honest, I don't really see much we can do here. Add another 4-6 options on D and another top 9 forward. We potentially might have Knies rolling in our top-9 come playoffs. I just don't see how a top 9 forward addition or D like Giordano really pushes us over the edge.

I think pipedream we're in the Hampus Lindholm camp.. but I don't think we'll ever be able to retain him. Atleast Giordano we could re-sign him for a couple years as a solid bottom 4-6 option.

Good point... not sure. Obviously this would be health dependent. Copp isn't in his mid 30s, he's only 27 years old, and on pace for a career year.

But the prize would be DeMelo. I think he's a pretty good mid-pair RHD signed to a pretty good cap hit for a few more years.

Keep in mind Campbell is UFA.

How can you even consider signing him at a starters rate when he's only had about 3 good months of being a starter?

Is he going to come back and be November Jack, or January Jack?

Well, goaltending is a complete mess, and bringing in a UFA starter/backup would really make it a ferris wheel.

That would depend on whether or not I think I would get fired for a poor showing this year.

If we are looking at a goalie, Anton Forsberg has a .918sv% this year and only makes 900k. If we were to trade Mrazek the other way and attach a prospect like Hirvonen, it would save us almost 3M to go after maybe a D man and another forward
It would cost more than Hirvonen but I think they need to consider that anyways. I expect Mrazek to bounce back to around his career average but he probably isn't really good enough at that to be a 1a or worth that contract to the club. It was a mistake signing but it doesn't have to be something they live with. The Leafs system center depth is not great. There are others I would move before Hirvonen.

Absolutely no way you resign Campbell. Nothing worse than a goalie who has confidence issues and mentally weak. Its not like a knee injury that you can get a surgery and get it fixed

He had 3 good months when half of the league was missing their players due to covid

There are goalies entire good seasons and still couldnt regain their forms. Like leighton, hambrugler.

For his sake he should sign with Arizona who has like total of 7 fans
