Not unless they're adding to the team without subtracting anything from it.Safe to say there won’t be any moves today
Fair pointNot unless they're adding to the team without subtracting anything from it.
I agree that goaltending is the biggest concern. But, this team really only needs a goalie that can stop pucks and they are a real threat. If they hadn't been pissing points away the past few months, they would be 1st or 2nd in the league. They are 5th in the league without that stopper. Is anybody else reluctant to want Dubas to invest in rentals based on what our goaltending looks like right now? I am thinking they should run with what we have and if they mess up, it’s time to break up the big 4 and retool.
At most I would get cheap depth guys who will only go in if there is an injury. Maybe give a Knies or Steeves a look down the stretch here.
We have some decent depth on D once Muzzin comes back. 2 of Holl, Sandin, Liljegren and Dermott will be sitting each night.
Again Goaltending is the biggest concern.
I wonder if DeMelo could be someone they sell? I know the Leafs have had interest in the past, and he's signed for a couple more years.
I think the Leafs would offer a good chunk of picks/prospects if they could swing for DeMelo and maybe Copp as well. Seems too ambitious cap space wise though.
The insiders recently have said they're more interested in a defenseman and a forward, so they may skip on goaltending. What’s the odds they bring in a goalie? Seems risky to run with this new guy.
....so if goaltending is the reason we lose out why exactly would the logical conclusion from that be breaking up the big 4 and not...getting better goaltending. Is anybody else reluctant to want Dubas to invest in rentals based on what our goaltending looks like right now? Upgrading the goaltending seems like somewhat of a tough task though because it essentially involves a team having to take on Mrazek (and potentially also having him approve the trade). The insiders recently have said they're more interested in a defenseman and a forward, so they may skip on goaltending.
But, I'd still personally put it at 100%.
He's played 2.5 games. This is a cup contending team. It'll be very interesting to see how Kallgren plays tonight. Before the last few games you KNOW there have been internal questions about goaltending. Then this kid comes out of nowhere and has seemed to settle the crease a little. Probably single-handedly changed the course of the Leafs deadline. If he plays even a decent game and stops the shots he is supposed to stop, I think that settles it that there will be no incoming goalies this deadline. I for one still have some faith in Jack but this Kally kid has thrown a wrinkle into everything.
I don't see Ottawa taking in Mrazek unless you offset it with a Kerfoot like deal. I believe Mrazek makea more actual money than his cap hit each of the next two years. Buffalo may be more likely though. If we are looking at a goalie, Anton Forsberg has a .918sv% this year and only makes 900k. If we were to trade Mrazek the other way and attach a prospect like Hirvonen, it would save us almost 3M to go after maybe a D man and another forward
I am not giving up Liljegren for 3 months of Lindholm...Londholm or nothing
Lets go Kyle
Also if Lilly is benched. Probably because hes part of a deal
If Muzzin is out for the season. They can delay that trade until the summer, when they are not so crunched for time. Waive him. It saves 1.125M on the cap. Someone like Forsberg, not saying him in general. But, he has a 900K cap hit. Even if Muzzin were not getting rested, waiving Mrazek gives you enough to bring him in without retention.Upgrading the goaltending seems like somewhat of a tough task though because it essentially involves a team having to take on Mrazek (and potentially also having him approve the trade).
Much would definitely depend upon any replacement they could bring in. For all of his struggles this season, I will say that Mrazek does at least bring a decent amount of playoff experience to the table. If Muzzin is out for the season. A Fleury/Varlamov trade may be hard in season. I'd be willing to give them a pass if they couldn't get a deal done there. But, to not get anyone at all would be a bad move.
I agree with you that basing anything off of a few starts is crazy. But we still also have a pretty darned good goalie in Campbell who had some struggles but may have been injured. Do we give up assets and bring in a 4th goalie when we have Jack, Mraz and Kally? Do they bring in another number 1 and basically tell the other 3 "we have zero faith in any of you so we're replacing you"? I'm not sure. Be interesting to see their thinking on that. He's played 2.5 games. This is a cup contending team.
Is Jack going to come back healthy and at full form or is he going to come back like Andersen did last year?
There is cap space, there are external options. Why would we willingly do that to ourselves?
It would test the league more then anything. Call penalties on the Leafs or continue letting Chara get away with being a lumberjack on skates.Friedman has said multiple times his fit for the Leafs is Chara. For one, not sure if he'd come here as he always had a hatred for the Leafs (I have no inside info on this just a feeling). But would he be so bad as a bottom pair pk clear-the-crease type? Probably wouldn't cost alot.
LOL. Also not sure if he'd see any PP time here, but having that bomb from the point would add a wrinkle we haven't really had for a while. It would test the league more then anything. Call penalties on the Leafs or continue letting Chara get away with being a lumberjack on skates.
If we lose out in the past with good goaltending what difference does it make. This team can't fight through tough defensive teams with good goaltending. Its always been our weakness, our goaltending had been good enough to win, it's been the ability to score on the Habs and Price, Columbus, Washington, Boston...he list is long..big defensive teams beat us.....so if goaltending is the reason we lose out why exactly would the logical conclusion from that be breaking up the big 4 and not...getting better goaltending.
