Tampa signed Declan Carlile to an ELC.

He was one of the top NCAA UFA defenseman on the market. Reports say he is nothing spectacular, but plays a safe and steady defensive game with some size and grit. Was a solid offensive producer, although the few highlights I saw from him, it did not really look like he had any stand out offensive skill or his skating was anything special (likely just had some empty production then). Has decent bottom pairing upside.

That's the ideal situation but MAF is not having an average season. He has been their MVP and he's the only reason they win any games. That's where we disagree I think. It's a lot but MAFs number are more representative of the team in front of him. Now the real question is will our D be any better in front of him so he can be our saviour? I don't know and I doubt it. BUT it's worth the risk. Ideally- 2nd in 2023, Mrazek and a prospect should do it but teams know we are desperate so we are going to get taken to lunch. Sad reality.

His actuals are higher than his expected at 5-on-5, and a lot higher on the PK.

His HDSV% is far from stellar also.

That typically doesn't happen if the goalie is much (or really any) better than the defense, and I have seen him give up some really rough goals this year. If we are paying a 1st for a rental goalie, he has to be a legit starter. Not convinced Fleury is that, so I am not paying through the nose for him.

Teams can say we are desperate, but we are also one of the few teams who need a goalie and considering most of the good ones have heavy NTC's which allow them to dictate where they go, we are probably bidding against ourselves at this point. The goalie market is far from a sellers market this year.

The only one who may have some say are maybe the Islanders with Varlamov, because he has the extra year and they can technically hold onto him. However, it doesn't change the fact that they are spending 5 mill on their backup and that Varlamov will still have a NTC containing half of the teams in the NHL. The market likely won't get better for him even if they wait.

That is still an overpayment on our part. The cost for dumping Mrazek is not bumping a 2nd to a 1st. Not even close.

And I am not even convinced MAF @ 50% is worth a 2nd straight up TBH. He has been maybe an average goalie this year who was had for free as a 7 mill goalie coming off of a Vezina-caliber season. He might get something as a 3.5 mill goalie, but it won't be anything significant. Maybe a 3rd and a decent prospect.
I think that right there suggests he's worth at least or more than a 2nd @50% at the TDL. He's the 2021 Vezina trophy winner & has the resume & ability to back it up. Him being dealt in the offseason @7m for nothing was the result of Vegas being in an urgent cap pinch. Chicago's been eating his 7m cap hit all season which is a factor in his value at the moment.

I'd hope it'd cost less but personally I'd be completely fine with dealing Mrazek + 1st for MAF @50%. Even at 37 he still has elite ability & is capable of pushing a team deep in the playoffs; he's performed particularly well when in tandems too. Love the guys personality, I think he'd mesh great.

Claude Giroux and Hampus Lindholm officially occupy the NHL’s high-rent district.

The two top rental candidates – neither is under contract for 2022-23 - are listed No. 1 and 2 on the new TSN Trade Bait list.

Philadelphia centre Claude Giroux moves up from second last week and is widely expected to be traded after playing his 1,000th NHL game with the Flyers Thursday at home versus Nashville.

Among the most motivated buyers for Giroux’s services are the Florida Panthers and Colorado Avalanche.

Contract negotiations continue between Lindholm and Anaheim, but as long as Lindholm remains unsigned, he is a prime target for Stanley Cup-contending teams who need a stud defenceman.

Which is to say virtually every team with legitimate championship aspirations.

Boston and Florida, again, come to mind immediately as teams that would love to have the 6-foot-4 left defenceman who rises from No. 14.

After four weeks at No. 1, Arizona left defenceman Jakob Chychrun drops to No. 3, but only because he suffered a lower-body injury in a game against Boston on Saturday. Just how long he will be sidelined is unclear.

Chychrun had 5 goals and 10 points in six games before the injury.

Really hoping we can do Mrazek + assets for Giordano + Driedger

He's arguably had a worse season than Mrazek. He's been REAL bad.

Driedger was my top goaltender target last off-season before Seattle picked him up. I still think he can bounce back and I might do this depending on the + assets but... he's really struggling this year.

The bolded is false.

By just about every 5v5 metric Mrazek has been worse than Driedger this year.

Among goalies with at least 700 5v5 mins this season (55 total):

Driedger: .780 HDSV% (51st), -0.32 HDGSAA/60 (50th), .910 SV% (43rd), -0.22 GSAA/60 (42nd)
Mrazek: .762 HDSV% (54th), -0.52 HDGSAA/60 (54th), .886 SV% (55th), -0.92 GSAA/60 (55th)

*the bolded is arguably false.

The numbers are close enough that you could easily make a case for either (injuries, days rest, statistical uncertainty, ...), although I too think Mrazek has been even worse than Driedger, but it's not clear cut to me.

Only watched a few games of Gio this year. He looked like garbage

Watched Seversson his whole career. Always looks like garbage

We should have gotten Manson at that price and a goalie, and we'd be set

Manson didn't have Leafs on his NTC list.
Considering he had an NTC list, Anaheim did exceptionally well getting a prospect and a 2nd

Gio has been trash and super slow
Seversson has been trash

I guess Ben Chiariot and Motte it is

To Toronto-

Then,

To Toronto-

Miller-Tavares-Crouse
Mikheyev-Kampf-Engvall
Knies-Spezza-Kase

Rielly-Brodie
Chychrun-Lyubushkin
Muzzin-Schenn

That to me looks like a cup contending then. Much added size and grit but also extremely skilled.
