Priskie is someone I'd keep an eye on.

I have no expectations for Priskie as an NHL defenseman, but if Duszak wants to leave and we are not bringing Biega back, we only have Hollowell and Villeneuve realistically on our depth chart next year. Priskie could be our Duszak replacement, but that also means he won't have much of an impact on our NHL roster either.

As for the others on that list:

I find it hard to believe Pitlick will be made available by Montreal. He has been excellent there and short of injury, should play the rest of the necessary games.

Middleton is decent defensive depth, but as stated earlier, is not worth SJS's asking price. That being said, he will likely find a bottom pairing job somewhere. Just likely won't be here.

No idea why Philp is 3rd on that list. He is a career AHLer. No NHL upside whatsoever, and there were guys listed at the bottom who are much better Group 6 UFA's then he is.

Taro Hirose, much like Marody, Ho-Sang, and Brooks, will probably get some interest as a AAAA guy who will get a shot an NHL job but most likely will be a primary offensive contributor in the AHL again. We may look at Brooks due to our familiarity with him, but the others are likely not coming here. We have younger offensive guys who need those spots, and we can just bring Brett Seney back. Seney is a similar type of player who is already familiar with the team, and I bet he is willing to re-sign with us even if he is a Group 6 UFA himself (I believe; Capfriendly lists him as an RFA still for some reason).

Zach Senyshyn should be someone the Leafs will keep tabs on. Former Soo player who was a high draft pick. Dubas knows him well. Hasn't amounted to much in the Bruins system, but he could be the kind of guy we sign similarly to Seney last year and let him be a top 6 AHLer with a shot to crack an NHL lineup. Has some edge, has the speed, has some good offensive potential. May just need a new shot elsewhere and could be a solid middle 6 winger still. At the very least, he can be a good offensive replacement for Joey Anderson. I can see interest in Mitchell Stephens as well, if he doesn't stay in Detroit (I think he will reach the threshold after Detroit moves a few bodies and opens a few spots).

Lagesson, Aho, Friedman, Juulsen, Niku, and Walman are decent defensive depth options (mostly for the Marlies). Some are better fits than others of course. Lagesson, Friedman, and Juulsen specifically are better fits since the Marlies need strong defensive presences more than offensive defensemen. Colton White and Austin Strand are another solid pair potentially, but they were not listed.

Both of the goalies on that list suck and will likely go back to Europe.

Menell is the only one officially listed as a Group 6 UFA who is Leafs property. We are not keeping him. He will likely be used as Duszak's Marlies replacement for the rest of the year and then will be let go. Dakota Joshua is another former Leafs' prospect who is a Group 6 UFA, and may be one of the better Group 6 guys out there.

I think out of that list, Rem Pitlick, Jakub Zboril (who is stupidly not listed here for some reason), and maybe Middleton/Joshua are the only ones with any kind of real upside for teams. The rest are AAAA options with maybe a little bit of long shot potential at best and are AHL fodder at worst.

If this team trades Liljegren I will be so pissed, especially if its for Motte or Schenn. He has the underlying numbers even against top pairing comp that scream he's a good top 4 dman already and has potential to be even more. The team just simply won't win a reasonable trade with him involved.
What if it's Boeser? Although I don't like the idea of Lily being traded at all.

I don’t want to dump Liljegren for someone like Motte that’s for sure.

If we was the centrepiece for a key player then it would make sense but I don’t see how this works out well for us

It won't be Liljegren. That is just who Vancouver likes from us (likely on our roster). Nothing about it being for a guy like Motte, and they would be high if they think a guy like Motte can get anything high end.

A guy like Motte is getting a long-shot prospect or a mid-round pick unless someone overpays. He is not the kind of guy the Leafs should be overpaying for.

Lyubushkin isn't a "puck moving D", and we seem to get it out of our own end easier when he's on the ice. Rielly can move the puck. Brodie can move the puck. Holl can move the puck. Muzzin makes a good first pass a lot of the time. Moving the puck doesn't mean you have to skate it out of your own end. I think we get too wrapped up in these guys that dazzle us at times with their offensive upside in transporting the puck or making a fancy play. If the playoffs started tomorrow, id rather have 6 Lyubushkin's than 6 Sandin's. That doesn't mean he's the better talent. A mix is ideal. But one extreme or the other? I'll take the stay at home physical D x6 over Offensive D x6 every time

I'd take neither, and Lyubushkin has had struggles getting the puck out (and has made a few mental mistakes/taken stupid penalties himself). Fortunately, he has mostly played against easy competition so it has not burned him as much, but I am not looking forward to having him playing against top pairing competition and I certainly wouldn't want two of him on the same pairing even if it is weaker competition. Rielly/Dermott/Sandin have done just as much, if not more, to cover for him than he has done the other way.

Besides, I am not playing Middleton in this lineup over Sandin; and even with Muzzin's struggles, Muzzin is significantly better than Middleton. Therefore, no room for him in our every day lineup.

I would still hate that. We've been dying to have a top 4 true RHD forever. It makes no sense to trade him as soon as we have him. Liljegren has been scoring at a 40 point pace since the end of November without powerplay time and has top 2 analytics for dmen on the team while being the only one out of him and Sandin to carry that play up the line-up. Trading him right now wouldn't work.

They have no cap space. They can't trade for a single significant piece without moving salary out.
Based on cap friendly they’ll have like 2.9 for the deadline. I’m not sure if that even includes the 2.5 from Vatrano

Either way, thank God for that Bobrovsky contract lol

Not if Chicago is serious about wanting a first+ for him.
Honestly, I would do it. This is a really solid team. With good Goaltending and one more solid D we are golden. Especially if CHI takes Mrazek a 1st makes sense. 1st and Mrazek for 50% retained MAF is fair. The first is bumped form a second so they take our awful goalie

A 4th is pretty cheap for Vatrano that’s a great pickup… kinda jealous

I imagine it will be the WPG 4th. The NYR 4th would be late.

Florida has been trying to dump Vatrano for a while for some reason. I guess he was an odd man out and costing them more money than he was able to bring to the team. Rangers are getting a pretty solid addition for the price.

Florida clearly has their eyes on a bigger fish and need to open up some money. They have had interest in high cap defensemen and forwards so it somewhat makes sense.

Seems like a buyers market thus far though. Lyubushkin went for about market price, and they had to take on Ritchie too. Manson went for less than Anaheim probably expected, even though Helleson is a solid piece. Jost + Vatrano seem like contenders trying to do soft dumps for money though, so we'll TBD those.

That is still an overpayment on our part. The cost for dumping Mrazek is not bumping a 2nd to a 1st. Not even close.

And I am not even convinced MAF @ 50% is worth a 2nd straight up TBH. He has been maybe an average goalie this year who was had for free as a 7 mill goalie coming off of a Vezina-caliber season. He might get something as a 3.5 mill goalie, but it won't be anything significant. Maybe a 3rd and a decent prospect.

Bump the 3rd up to a 2nd for taking Mrazek, and they are getting a good deal on all ends.

Actually this is correct. Cap Friendly was projecting just over 200k in cap space for them but they are still counting Vatrano as being on the books. Still going to be really hard for them to add another significant piece unless they pay out the nose for retention.

That's the ideal situation but MAF is not having an average season. He has been their MVP and he's the only reason they win any games. That's where we disagree I think. It's a lot but MAFs number are more representative of the team in front of him. Now the real question is will our D be any better in front of him so he can be our saviour? I don't know and I doubt it. BUT it's worth the risk. Ideally- 2nd in 2023, Mrazek and a prospect should do it but teams know we are desperate so we are going to get taken to lunch. Sad reality.
