Josh Manson had 10 hits last night. Holy moly.

Colorado coach said after that game that it's exactly what he wanted on his back end because the playoffs are a blood bath and they were missing previous year. They're D-Core now has both Manson and McDermid.

Yeah get us Middleton Dubas.

Yet there are a few around here that claim hits are useless

Ridiculous claim.

Hits are extremely important, especially in a long playoff series, because it wears the other team down. We can't expect to just poke check and expect them to get tired. There needs to be resistance.

Hitting is also separating your man from the puck. You're practically delaying a player a whole 2-5 seconds from the play if you hit correctly.

Hitting and clearing the front of the net is extremely crucial to win any playoff series.

Go to uncle Lou and try and get a package of clutterbuck + Mayfield + Varly for a couple of runs and help them reload for a retool.
Mrazek + Holl/Dermott + whatever futures are needed.

Hits being high when all you're doing is chasing the game and getting caved in are useless.

Hits while keeping up high possession numbers, that's a different story.

I don't see much happening here

Apparently we liked Motte. Nothing much happens at either end of the ice with him on. Low HDCF and xGF, but also low HDCA and xGA even though he gets hemmed in a lot and has terrible possession numbers overall. And he likes running around hitting people even though he is small. Somewhat similar to Dzingel/T. Moore with less NHL offensive upside and a lot more hitting.

I don't really see the fit but I guess if he comes at the right pirce, he can be a decent depth option. Maybe could be a guy who could rotate in on our 4th line if we want it to chew up more minutes and be more defensive; or maybe playing with Spezza/Kerfoot may get more out of him offensively (he has produced at lower levels). He may be able to fill in on our shutdown line if we absolutely need him to, but we have other guys who can do that already. He has sucked on the PK this year but has been better in the past.

I wouldn't give them more than a mid-tier prospect or a contract dump + mid-round pick though. We can afford to move a prospect in the mid-late teens from our pool for a guy like him, and that is before we can maybe add a McBain or a Meyers.

Not sure who we're getting if we're trading Lily, cause I doubt Miller is happening. Seems like a no go to me as well.

Also one which would have real troubles moving the puck and will likely get hemmed in a lot more than we were in the past. Probably not a good thing when we have struggled to get basic saves not just now, but in previous playoffs too.
Lyubushkin isn't a "puck moving D", and we seem to get it out of our own end easier when he's on the ice. Rielly can move the puck. Brodie can move the puck. Holl can move the puck. Muzzin makes a good first pass a lot of the time. Moving the puck doesn't mean you have to skate it out of your own end. I think we get too wrapped up in these guys that dazzle us at times with their offensive upside in transporting the puck or making a fancy play. If the playoffs started tomorrow, id rather have 6 Lyubushkin's than 6 Sandin's. That doesn't mean he's the better talent. A mix is ideal. But one extreme or the other? I'll take the stay at home physical D x6 over Offensive D x6 every time

This notion that adding Middleton "would crown up our bottom half"....is complete BS. Its like people refuse to learn to constant 1st rd exits.

Its called having depth. We have to be ready to play any type of game. Tampa Bay had Bogosian/Luke Schenn in their cup run last year. Good players will end up sitting out and being healthy scratched. Thats what a Good Stanley Cup team looks like.

Adding Middleton would give us the ability to play any kind of game we want to play based off our opponent. Having those options is what makes a good team.

A bruinsing defense goes a long way in the playoffs. Just look at what Montreal's defense was able to do to our highly powered offense last year.
Our inability to learn from first round exits is exhausting. Nail on the head.
I have nothing further to add here. Well said.

Step back despite him getting close? This looks more and more like an LTIR play in disguise. Something to keep an eye on for trades.

I think they have to make a move with the thinking he won't be back, or if he is, he's had a rough year without this recent injury.

Why not get Middleton as Muzzin insurance? Then can trade Muzzin in offseason? Then pick up Braun.

Rielly Brodie
Middleton/Muzzin Braun
Sandin Lyubushkin

People just completely ignore stylistic fit and only consider additions that constitute an analytical upgrade of some kind.

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Middleton - Liljegren

[Sandin - Lyubushkin]

Rotate the 3rd/depth pair depending on if you need Sandin's PP2 presence. If you don't like the Muzz-Holl pair this season, swap Holl/Lyubushkin.

Gives you a ton of flexibility and will not cost you a 1st, arguably not even a 2nd. Build a deal around Dermott for Middleton.

This is why Bruins have emerged as a very scary threat. High possession high xGF team and wear you down with hits on top of that.

The first one isn't necessarily true in playoffs though. If you get caught sleeping in a game and find yourself chasing it and lose, you set yourself up nice for later games in the series if you can leave some bruises on your opponent, especially around games 5-7 when it's time to close a series off.
