They have been terrific, but as we all know, the playoffs are a different animal and I'm not sure they're ready for it yet.
They deserve to play and if the team wants to actually win in the playoffs they need to stop getting in their own way and ice the best possible roster. Playoff experience will do nothing but good for them moving forward.

Our young D made grave mistakes which literally costed us games against Montreal last year.

at 5v5 in the playoffs last year, Bogosian was on the ice for SIX goals against. The next highest on the team was on for 3.

Goals against per 60 minutes:

Bogosian 4.06
Sandin 3.65
Muzzin 1.96
Holl 1.41
Dermott 1.24
Rielly 0.80
Brodie 0.00

but leafs fans want more Bogosians.

Unless the hawks are going full rebuild I’m not sure I see the logic behind trading a guy like Hagel. Unless they believe he’s a flash in the pan and are selling high

Right? I am with you - sounds so ridiculous to be starting Holl over those two. They are core future pieces - give them the experience they need to grow.
I think they are the future of our blueline. However, they will invariably have growing pains in the playoffs (Sandin struggled against the Habs last year and Liljegren has never played an NHL playoff game).

We are in win now mode, and considering the quality of competition we are going to face in the first round, I'm not sure if this is the right time to be giving our young defencemen experience in the postseason.

A healthy 3rd pairing of Muzzin-Holl would be pretty daunting for the opposition in my opinion.

Sandin had two brutal giveaways in game 5 that cost them and Dermott's horrific dipsy doodling cost them game 6.

There's half of the goals Bogo was on for.

you ever wonder if the fact they were playing with a stiff who couldn't support them made their jobs harder?

because bogosian was on the ice for a lot a lot a lot of goals, no matter who his partner was.

I don't disagree in theory, but giving them that experience will come with costly errors, and I don't think we can afford that in the first round this season.

Those goals I referenced had absolutely nothing to do with what Bogosian was doing.

no?

do you remember what Bogosian was doing when his d partners, all alone, were forced to try and make plays?

Is it bad that I somewhat hope it is not Toronto.

I don't want to take a bet on that shooting percentage maintaining itself long term, even if he is playing with good players.

Leafs’ D search

We’ve already talked about the Maple Leafs showing some interest in under-the-radar blueliner Jacob Middleton in San Jose (along with Tampa Bay and Boston I believe). Although the current asking price for Middleton — a second-round pick plus another pick/or prospect — seems too high for Toronto’s liking at the moment.

Of course, a bigger name that could be a fit is Giordano, who would no doubt welcome a chance to play for his hometown team.

Add in the fact that Kraken GM Ron Francis and Leafs GM Kyle Dubas have a close relationship, and the seeds are there for something to be worked out potentially.

But here’s the potential catch: my colleague Darren Dreger at TSN reported Wednesday that the Maple Leafs have let it be known they’re not moving their first-round pick for a rental player, or at least they certainly don’t want to. And as reported a few weeks ago, the asking price on Giordano started with a first-round pick.

Now, asking for a first-round pick and actually getting it are sometimes two different realities.

Boston and St. Louis could also be options for Giordano. But again, my understanding is Blues GM Doug Armstrong also doesn’t want to move a first-round pick for a rental.

Does the price paid by Florida on Chiarot change that reality?

For Giordano to land in a Maple Leafs uniform, it feels like it has to be a second-round pick and a prospect.

Francis did well on the Calle Jarnkork return with Calgary on Wednesday night. I don’t think he’s going to want to soften the ask on Giordano unless he absolutely has to.

And finally, I wouldn’t worry about Giordano’s modified no-trade list. My understanding is that Giordano has told Francis he won’t stand in the way of any deal to pretty much any contender. He wants a chance to go play playoff hockey.

He's a hockey player, not a fortune teller. I don't think he anticipated his partner's making extremely bad giveaways with very little pressure on them.

he doesn't have to maintain his shooting percentage to be a valuable player though. If Dubas gave up a 1st round pick for a rental Foligno, I'd say that paying a similar price for a much better player who's locked up for 1.5 million for another two years would be extremely worth it

If Chicago gets their asking price, we are talking about a lot more than that though.

And as someone who thought a Foligno rental was worth maybe a 3rd round pick, being worth more than Foligno does not mean you give up more than Foligno picked up.

he certainly didn't anticipate much, that's for sure.

weird that his mistake prone d partners were only mistake prone with him (nowhere close) on the ice.

I would like Hagel, I don’t think he’s a flash in the pan. He’s cheap, young, and not a rental. A 1st is steep, but maybe worth it for us.

Oh yeah, also another goal Bogo was on the ice for was Galchenyuk's infamous pass that led to the 2 on 0 in OT.

I'm actually glad you brought this up - perfect example of why hockey isn't played on a stat sheet and why you actually have to watch the game to understand how things go down.
