There’s nothing to unpack unless they can get reasonable goaltending.
When they got decent metminding they were solid in their own zone. That’s with muzzin & holl not being very good and without boosh. A healthy muzz, a fixed holl and added boosh makes me less concerned about the back end and with a week until the deadline there’s only so much that can be “fixed”
No one other additions will make a lick of difference if the goaltending isn’t straightened out

Part of the issues is they have got either league worse goaltending or vezina quality. Never had decent goalie performances so its hard to gauage anything. Agreed with your last point, no point in making significant adds without fixing the goalie situation

Goalie and D work synergy. With plays on ice affecting G the most.

And cap limit. Can't fix all.

Easier path is fix D. Hockey is played on ice not on stat sheet. Fixing D affect how actual game play out. Defence mean to prevent. So if you help the D problem, there is also increase in goaltending even though you didn't change goalies because on ice outcomes now all change too. This no measured in stats

Reverse is not correct. If you fix the goalie, you don't fix any D. Mental theory that D suck being mental stress from goalie is very cheap theory. Now you still have to go spend asset on D because the play on ice in front goalie is still same.

Boat example not too nice. Boat example only work in no cap world where you have freedom to do all. This more complex you need to take path that maximize what you fix.

Leafs defense and goaltenders are a match made in heaven, to be sent to hades.

I'd be up for a huge deal, if it is long term.

I just don't see this as a team that is worthy of rentals, unless they're really cheap.

I would take out Mayfield and just get Varlamov.

The article says a 1st for Varlamov (and I believe Mrazek would have to go the other way because otherwise it makes no sense for us). I suggested Dermott + Abruzzese; I think that is pretty close, if not exceeds, that value, and it comes in assets which make a lot more sense for Lou and the Islanders (i.e. not a guy who will take 3+ years to get to the NHL).

Cap is about the same for both teams both ways (Islanders have to take on an extra 300k).

Colorado is complaining about goaltending yet they have some of the highest save percentages in the league? Seems odd.

We are right in the middle of the league, and if we spend another mill, we are in the top 10. Would an extra mill fix our goaltending? If so, not that hard to open up that room right now and get it fixed (i.e. with Varlamov, who makes just over a mill more than Mrazek on the cap).

So we are not "cheaping out". Our goalies just aren't earning their money right now. If they earned their money, we would be doing more than fine.

I'm not sure what you would call that, what terminology would not trigger people, they are frugal on goalie spending or they spend less than their peers?

Its definitely true that Mrazek isn't playing to his cap hit (i.e. starter), however Campbell over the entire season so far has definitely played to his cap hit (i.e. backup). The leafs gambled on Mrazek as a starter and he has fallen brutally short, it definitely sucks.

Ya Colarado have had some pretty bad performances a few months ago, can check if you'd like.

I would do the opposite. Varlamov's numbers are below standard on a superior defensive team, they'd tank on Toronto.

I have more trust in Servalli’s rumors than Friedman. I do think Chariot can help us but not at the price Montreal wants.

I know others are going to say Chariot sucks but the whistles go away in the playoffs and chariot will make sure you have to work to get to the front of the net. I think they end up with justin Braun who will come in much cheaper.

nonsense was during good time. only fun. no need to be serious. but have to speak up when idea will hurt team. if you improve D you get indirect goalie increase. This is true as fundamental. On boat you can upgrade any crew member but it won't do anything to help hole. That is what fixing the goalie only will do. The D is actually the hole in the boat. If you fix the hole it indirectly help crew member because they won't drown now.

Goalie need fix but theres cap and limit assets to get player. so fix real hole and hope goalie you already have stop being stupid now that better condition to not sink.

I'd rather spend asset on a dmen than a goalie, because I think any goalie that we can "reasonably" get is not going to improve the team by much. We have to hope that Campbell puts it back together or Kallgren is serviceable. I give up on Mrazek.

Saying that though.... I really like Nico Daws from NJ. If we can get him for cheap, I'd do that deal.

He still can’t cross the border without requiring to quarantine and isolate. His selfishness towards the issue handicapping his team over a poke in the arm would be an indicator to me he’s not a team player

That is a solid pickup for them.

I’m convinced there’s a group here who would be okay seeing the team lose every game as long as they goon it up and partake in the post whistle fake toughness garbage

Likewise, I’m pretty sure the soft skill failing year after year after year doesn’t bother the a certain group on here just as long as Dubas is at the helm of the ship, cooing sweet nothings about the PP being our strength, while we watch teams who use their “fake toughness garbage” to fight through the playoffs.

Great add but would be purely a rental for a steep price that we can't re-sign. And doesn't make us any tougher. It's a no from me personally. Also a lefty D for what that's worth
