Issue is that management has to be able to identify a Binnington or Murray and give them the reigns at precisely the right moment. If you pick up Fleury (or whomever) and it's more of the same, who do you start in the playoffs? There would then be a ⅓ chance that they start the right goalie. And if they can't identify who the right goalie is in the first place, I don't have much faith that they'd make the right call.

Our playoff hopes are basically going to come down to dumb luck and that's not a position that we should be buying in.

My frustration with the state of the current team echos some of your points. You often hear “Kyle is betting on…x, y, z” and often feels like the Leafs strategy comes down to some Hail Mary Moneyball gambit.

I feel like the Shanaplan was promising first class construction all the way but it’s sort of deflated into an all world top line duct taped to a Wild Card roster in recent weeks. Everything just feels… cheap.

Which is prone to happen, when you focus too much on short-term results, in attempting to achieve long-term goals. You lose sight of the bigger picture.

Chiarot out tonight, trade coming? I wouldn't mind him, I know people hate on him because he's not a good puck mover but he's more of what we need a big physical presence that clears the front of the net.

He's not well liked not just because he's pretty average skill wise, but because he doesn't defend well either. Tough doesn't mean better defensively.

But you're right. He's just what we need to clear the front of the net and just throw a bunch of hits. More hits the better. If we're gonna suck and if goaltenders won't make a save, we might as well just get physical players that will at least do something.

Seller's market?!? Well that definitely contradicts what many here thought this was.

Yeah I was more throwing it up for the names he said but not sure how reliable he is. In the past I thought he had called some things.

Anyway I'd think it's more of a buyers market too. The east is pretty much set and the west they only have a few that will be realistically fighting it out for the playoffs.

ANA/TOR - Lindholm and Comtois for a 1st, Dermott and prospect Kokkonen. I put this as Dermott for Comtois, 1st and prospect for Lindholm. I think it's close value wise? Maybe make pick conditional based on performance/re-signing Lindholm, maybe upgrade Kokkonen to Hirvonen depending on perceived value from teams.

ARI/TOR - Speers and Wedgewood for Mrazek and Duszak. -- Coyotes get a goaltender they can rebuild with, adds salary once they shed some. They can re-flip him once he does better. Adds a potential NHL depth defenseman/forward in Duszak? Speers is a bad AHL player (dump) and Wedgewood is whatever.

Dubas has said that he has bet his job on this core numerous times. Does it mean he is fired this year if they fail? No, but many think that his job depends on it. Personally if I am Leaf management I am not sure I want the guy who bet everything on this core, responsible for changing it after the team's 4th 1st round exits in 4 tries under his reign as Leaf GM.

**NHL RUMORS** Source: Leafs keeping tabs on Giordano (Kraken), Severson (Devils), Braun (Flyers) on defense. Still a sellers market right now. Still monitoring goalie market if something makes sense they could pull trigger.. Varlamov, Holtby, Halak, MAF all could be available.

I don't see Jaroslav Halak being brought in.

I'd love to know how it's brutal. It might be off a bit here but what more could they get for a pending UFA not exactly setting the world on fire. A 1st and a good prospect for Lindholm is pretty much what the pundits all agree would be the high bar. If they can get more than that for him... I applaud them. Are you expecting top prospects and multiple first round picks?

Dermott for Comtois to me is ok, especially with rumours that Comtois wants to move on, or Anaheim is trying to find him a new home. I don't think their value is that much far apart. When you add all the value together it's at least close to the ballpark it'll take. But maybe I'm wrong and you can enlighten my bad value perception.

A top pick and Kokkonen for Lindholm as a rental is not bad for what Lindholm is these days. He is, at best, a rental version of Muzzin and Muzzin had a year and a half left on his deal. You are dropping one good prospect from the deal to account for the one year that you lost, and that is a nice return for Lindholm.

Dermott may not be enough on his own to get Comtois, but given how poorly Comtois has done this year, Dermott is not a bad starting point. Maybe you do Dermott + a prospect like Kokkonen to get Comtois. I wouldn't pay more than that for him.

Severson doesn't make sense if we are looking to improve on defense.

Gio maybe makes sense if Muzzin is out longer, but it looks like that is not the case. Are we paying assets and spending whatever cap space we have just to sit Sandin? I don't see it personally.

It’s the only hole worth worrying about right now, if it’s not solved one way or another nothing else that could be done to improve the line up would matter.
Some scoring depth or another big guy on the back end would both be nice, but not needed. This team as is with average goaltending is a contender.

If the defense isn't improved it won't matter who the goalie is. That is the problem, the Leafs are desperately in need of both.

I gotta agree, there’s lots of middling and depth players here, if it’s a skater coming in it has to be a difference maker. Right now the only focus needs to be on correcting the issue in net

This isn’t babcock leaf’s, they’re actually a reasonably structured and capable team defensively, and there are plenty of traditional and advanced metrics that show this is the case. The goaltending has been brutal. Period end of statement. Defenders aren’t the reason Petr and jack have been dogshit all of 2022.

And yet there seems to be a large section of the fanbase which claims they watch this team every game and know hockey but think our defense has been absolutely horrid.

Seems like Dubas is right betting on his core. But it’s more like a Super 2 and a Medium 2 instead of a Big 4. Nylander is young enough and cheap enough that you can wait for him to firm up a Big 3. The jury is still out. But that Tavares bet doesn’t seem like it will pay off in Years 4-7 when it didn’t in Years 1-3. It’s just handcuffing the entire process.

Who cares what he says? Masai said demar would never be moved and less than 24 hours later kawhi was a raptor.
I don’t get this obsession with people to take what these guys say to heart and so literal. He’s protecting his assets and not giving away his position. Pretty simple tbh

Reasonably structured until hemmed in the zone. Then what? We're going up against equals in the playoffs we're not going to have the luxury of our possession game keeping the puck away from the net/zone.

"Period end of statement" on a team that coughs it up the most in their back end out of all playoff teams and is the softest playoff team when it comes to stopping cycles and clearing the crease? Our own GM doesn't even agree with you there. I mean if you have the energy to sell that thought go ahead, but I don't think people are buying that anymore at this point.
