I think they go with a 3rd stringer type who could step in if this tire fire continues

Forsberg, Stolarz, Georgiev, Anderson, Delia ?? Going with another 3rd stringer would be a kin to trying to put out a fire by pissing on it. It has to be somebody closer to a #1 or a healthy Soup IMO.

Dubas is better off to trying to lower the expectations of Leaf nation. Unfortunately it might be too late for that given Shanny has said they will win with this core and Dubas has bet his job on them.

And win 16 in the playoffs and they win the cup. Neither has happened yet

Which has nothing to do with setting a franchise record for points in a regular season, which is what I responded to.

Win the SC and nobody cares where they finished in the standings. They are in no danger of missing the playoffs. What is important is that they find their mojo by the end of April.

I don't really see the point in adding another goalie. It's a quality problem, not a quantity problem. This isn't like with forwards or defense, where you can make up for a positional weakness with depth at that position. We had Andersen, Campbell and Rittich last playoffs, only Campbell played. Even if we trade for Fleury he probably retires in the off-season and we're back at square one, less the assets used to acquire Fleury.

A long-term solution in net is an off-season move and probably one beyond the capabilities of our front office.

Im in the same boat. The most likely options are
Carolina. Florida. Tampa. Lesser extent boston

I don’t see an easier out of the top 3. They all have challenges and we blew it against the bottom seed last year.

So just get jack feeling good. Go for a reasonable upgrade on D…..
Unless you think you can extend lindholm.

And let the chips fall. I mean if Tampa completely fell off and we faced boston that would he the best but least likely.

Don’t sell the farm for a player we can’t re sign.

A gio would be a reasonable pick up for a mid pick.

Yeah I don’t know why he’d want to take this challenge on with how much attention the situation is getting. Any goaltender who the Leafs acquire will be under an unbelievable amount of scrutiny and expected to propel this messy team to immediate victories.

I sense we will trade for a D first, then a F. Dubas has to see that we do not have the depth to score in tighter checked games.

I get that the Leafs are down Muzzin and Campbell from their early season success, but it also feels like the Leafs are regressing a bit into a one line super team with average everything held together by duct tape and springing leaks on the back end lately. To sum it up, if we can’t put score out problems we have no chance. And that’s a shaky place to be.

My question is, do we see a potential Leaf deadline deal looking like more of a beginning of a bigger offseason retool than a finishing all in move? Feels like they need to move many contracts out to be able to restructure moving ahead into next year. Aka like the entire upper middle to middle class needs to be rebuilt.

I think it’s a bit of both. The situation is ripe for a classic Hamburglar, Martin Gerber or J-S Aubin to come in and just do a professional job properly and quietly. We basically need a journeyman to come in and just be the “tank buster” and string together some wins and rebuild some confidence. That’s the short term fix.

Mrazek almost needs to be removed from the situation so his mentality can’t further erode confidence in that room.

Right now Mrazek and Campbell are leaking points. Forsberg and Stolarz are goalies with recent success behind poor defensive teams who wouldn't be the worst short term patch job.

If a trade for Fleury or Varlamov isn't there. Securing one of those two for a mid round pick or B-prospect is probably your best play. They are a fresh face that has a chance to run with it. It's a gamble worth making considering the type of team we have in front of them.

Then, ideally Soup finds form and now there is a Forsberg/Stolarz who can step in ahead of Mrazek.

Also I’m not overly worried about mid round picks going out. We can/will recoup moving out dermott holl kerfoot

I think Dubas is in a very difficult spot right now and there's no way to come out of it looking good.

At last year's trade deadline, it was the time to add depth because of how good the Leafs looked. Whether it was the right players isn't the point I'm trying to make right now. It was that he saw potential of a better team.

This year, the Leafs started really slow and there was noise that they should be making drastic changes to the roster. Dubas stood pat and it was the right decision to block out the noise for the month. Since the start of the 2022, the Leafs goaltending and defense have been awful and it's starting to trickle down throughout the entire roster. So what can he do? If he gives up any sort of assets, people are going to be pissed because they're not a true contender and they're not built to win. And if he does nothing, he's going to get roasted for not making the team better when they're firmly in a playoff spot.

Mrazek almost needs to be removed from the situation so his mentality can’t further erode confidence in that room.

Issue is that management has to be able to identify a Binnington or Murray and give them the reigns at precisely the right moment. If you pick up Fleury (or whomever) and it's more of the same, who do you start in the playoffs? There would then be a ⅓ chance that they start the right goalie. And if they can't identify who the right goalie is in the first place, I don't have much faith that they'd make the right call.

Our playoff hopes are basically going to come down to dumb luck and that's not a position that we should be buying in.

Dubas has never been one to make those trades for expiring contracts though. He would just prefer to let guys hit free agency.

He has been looking to trade Holl forever.
Kerfoot cap will probably be needed elsewhere. He has 750 k salary.

Not sure if this guy is good or ever was at calling things but...

**NHL RUMORS** Source: Leafs keeping tabs on Giordano (Kraken), Severson (Devils), Braun (Flyers) on defense. Still a sellers market right now. Still monitoring goalie market if something makes sense they could pull trigger.. Varlamov, Holtby, Halak, MAF all could be available.

It honestly blows my mind that you think the only significant hole on this team is a goalie.
It’s the only hole worth worrying about right now, if it’s not solved one way or another nothing else that could be done to improve the line up would matter.
Some scoring depth or another big guy on the back end would both be nice, but not needed. This team as is with average goaltending is a contender.

You keep saying this, but there’s no indication that this is the case, at all. This season is a referendum on the core, not management

I have no idea if these are close. Just going from the rumours and having a little fun.

ANA/TOR - Lindholm and Comtois for a 1st, Dermott and prospect Kokkonen. I put this as Dermott for Comtois, 1st and prospect for Lindholm. I think it's close value wise? Maybe make pick conditional based on performance/re-signing Lindholm, maybe upgrade Kokkonen to Hirvonen depending on perceived value from teams.

ARI/TOR - Speers and Wedgewood for Mrazek and Duszak. -- Coyotes get a goaltender they can rebuild with, adds salary once they shed some. They can re-flip him once he does better. Adds a potential NHL depth defenseman/forward in Duszak? Speers is a bad AHL player (dump) and Wedgewood is whatever.

Seller's market?!? Well that definitely contradicts what many here thought this was.

Dermott holl and Kerfoot have an extra year of term, they can all be moved off-season to clear cap and back fill the draft capital spent
