Is it just me or our 3rd line been absolutely invisible offensively.
Kase had a good run, but he's super injury prone and doesn't keep his head up. Kampf doesn't belong on the 3rd line.
I would look to add some bite and firepower on the 3rd line.
Unless you want to completely change how we use the 3rd line, which has been about as successful as you can possibly be in their role, then we should not touch it.
I think rather than bump Kampf down and ruin an excellent line, you can do one of three things:
1) Keep the current line deployments but add someone who can provide more ES firepower on that 4th line. Engvall produces fine on that 4th line, but Simmonds and Spezza do not have absolute nor underlying numbers which are very attractive considering they get almost 60% OZS% against the easiest competition (they are arguably worse ES producers than our 3rd line too).
2) Add another defensive player on the 4th line, even out the defensive responsibility in the bottom 6, and allow the 3rd line to get more offensive opportunities. Kase and Mikheyev have shown they are capable of producing on the PP and off of the rush at ES, but given how often they start in their own end, they don't have many opportunities to generate ES offense on the cycle. That will likely increase their offensive productivity.
3) If the price is appropriate, you can add someone to 2LW, push Kerfoot down to the Engvall/Spezza line, and have a two-way 4th line. This will be very pricey and there are few options that can really make this work (practically none if you exclude rentals which are outside of our price range), even though this is the option everyone seems to want to focus on.
Dubas will probably look at what can be done here, on top of moving around some depth on the Marlies to give the Leafs a few more attractive call-up options, but I would not be surprised if only the latter is done over the next month. Additionally, he is likely keeping close tabs on Joey Anderson (who added another 2 goals today and is one of the best U26 goalscorers in the AHL this year) and Nick Robertson to see if they could potentially play on our playoff roster.
